Is this happening wih version 5.4.4? Upgrading (or downgrading to 5.4.3) then
might help.

Also, sending any generated .dmp file to doho will probably help him, or a fellow
dev, figure the issue out.

CChris and others this sounds like another explanation exactly like this one
infinite loop after save -- I have the same symptoms less frequently

I have a feeling this is a similar explanation of what may be the same error.
Samba - Hanging NP++.

Is there a way to generate a dump or other output when this occurs in Windows
XP to assist the debugging of the issue?

This was happening with 5.4.3 and when I upgraded to 5.4.4 it persisted. I did
a search on my hd and couldn't find the .dmp file, where should it be located?

Along with all config files, it's called NppDump.dmp. It may not have been generated
- there is no documentation that states when N++ gets a chance to produce it.
I'll dig the source in case I find reliable clues.

I backed off to version 5.1.4 and the problem has not yet reoccurred today.
I intend to move forward one version a day until I find the problem again --
this should identify the version where the behavior started. ( I believe (not
very reliable) that I upgraded from 5.1.3 to 5.4.3 when the bad behavior was
noticed -- like the other users I have the same problem with version 5.4.4, too.

If you could try to identify what you are doing when it crashes (e.g. saving,
starting a search, opening a new file, running a macro, etc, etc), it would
help as well.
Getting 100% reproducible steps to the crash would be the very best way for
us to identify and fix the problem.

joce.

Another day of testing and version 5.2 (on Windows) does not seem to have the
problem.

Jocelyn -- additional reports I believe may be the same error. (two are mine)
Note I have had all the same symptoms as the original poster on this thread
too -- excluding the frequency (I was experiencing up to three times a day normally
on both versions 5.4.3 and 5.4.4). I edit numerous plain text files (SQL) none
very large.

Samba - Hanging NP++ (New)
By: Frank (syphernl) - 2009-07-06 09:02
Hi,

I use Notepad++ with files on a Samba share.
Sometimes NP++ hangs and has to be killed since it won't get back.

There are no problems with my Samba config/server and it only happens with NP++.
Pretty annoying..

RE: Samba - Hanging NP++ (New)
By: David (pasha19) - 2009-07-07 14:55
Frank;

I have a similar error (no SAMBA - Windows XP SP 3) see (infinite loop
after save) about 4 messages after yours. Check task manager (or your OS's
equivalent) when the hang occurs --a loop in NOTEPAD++ seems to be evident on
my machine as notepad utilizes 50% of a dual core CPU (100% of a single core).

I hope this helps you and those that are knowledgeable to isolate the
problem.

infinite loop after save (New)
By: David (pasha19) - 2009-07-06 21:35
Randomly after a file is saved (possibly related to spurrious clicks) notepad++
hangs and task manager indicates 50% usage on the CPU (this is a dual core box
(100% of one CORE). Is there a debug mode I can utilize to gather additional
information? Version 5.4.3 on Windows XP SP 3. I am attempting an upgrade to
5.4.4, however this problem has been present in several recent versions -- I
don't know which version started this behavior.

Reporting back in:

I installed 5.4.1 and the problem hasn't happened to me since!

I did lose the Function list plugin though, maybe that was the problem?

I will report in again after another day of use.

Another day and version 5.3 does not appear to have the problem however it
has a replace bug that was reported as fixed in 5.3.1 so I would not recommend
it as a preferred alternative to 5.4.3 or beyond.

I did see Mike in the prior post is having success with 5.4.1 (which many may
choose to follow) however since there are so few versions to test to get to
5.4.1 I intend to continue with my one version a day testing.

The function list plugin shouldn't be the problem, I don't have it in my version
of 5.4.4. The function list is an optional install.

You lost the FunctionList plugin because the installer insisnts that it is ANSI,
while it is not and works correctly. This is an installer bug I have complained
about ever since v5.1.2. Guess some day I'll delve into the source and see if
I can make sense out of it, it doesn't seem to be a high priority, though it
is inconvenient and must put off all new users on their first update.

I have this problem as well (as pasha already quoted). At first I was suspecting
this had something to do with the fact my files are stored on a samba share
but it also happens with the local file system.

I downgraded to 5.4.3, 5.4.0 but those were still crashing. I am nu running
5.3.1.

Could it be something related to the "change marker"? This has been added in
5.4.0 as far as i recall.

Dang it just locked up on me. The pattern was I hit CTRL-S on a large file then
I hit the up arrow key immediately after that. Locked up at 50% cpu.

I'm actually on a high speed connection today so that doesn't seem to be the
issue. Maybe hitting a key in the middle of saving a file?

I have what might be the same problem, but it occurs sporadically - up to 20-30
times a day (until I quit, basically), or sometimes not at all. It almost always
happens when selecting text. I'm using 5.4.3, but I've had the problem with
all previous versions I've used as well. I've noticed it does not happen as
often when working on files under 10000 lines, if that's any use...

I tend to save numerous tabs (files - small compared to the 10,000 lines indicated
by others) in a relatively short period of time (speed of my mouse operations
- not using "Save All") using the right mouse click on a tab (to the same drive
often the same folder). Has anyone else noticed the possibility of concurrency
issue in the save function when multiple files are requested to be processed
in a short period of time(using Ctrl-S or other methods probably excluding -
or possibly including - "Save All")? This could explain why those with larger
files experience the "hang" more often.

The multiple file contention context does not appear to be solely significant
I just had a hang in 5.4.0 where I was saving a single small file. It was a
file that had been previously closed and NOT saved after another file had been
saved. It may be related to reuse of the save function or the interference
of canceling tab with modified content and reopening the same file (to access
the original content) in a new tab and completing the desired (corrected) update.
There was another file that was saved prior in the session

On upgrading, installer declares that plugin xyz (mostlt FunctionList, HexEditor
and Compare) are not compatible.
They are, because they worked with the earlier version, and do work with the
new one.

The workaround I use is to rename each dll thus flagged as .dl. Then when installer
is done, I rename them back. And the newer Notepad++ works fine with these dlls.

The bug is that the installer wishes to delete plugins because they "are not
compatible", even though they are for all practical purposes. This has happened
since v5.1.3. Since I haven't installed 5.1.0, the bug could be around as early
as that.

I'll try to generate a large file and reproduce it on my side later today.

I have tried. The only pattern I have found is that I hit CTRL-S to save and
then it stops working. I notice many of the times I hit CTRL-S then immediately
after, I started hitting up and down arrows to go somewhere in the code. That
is when I notice it is locked up at 50% CPU. Doesn't happen as often in 5.4.1.

File size doesn't seem to be the issue. typical files I have been working with
are round 8K. I will try to pay more attention to the file size the next time
it happens.

When you mean remove all, do you remove the ones that came pre-installed with
the base install or just the additional ones.

The installer messages are not accurate.
FunctionList and HexEditor are extremely unstable, so they are removed by installer
in order to keep Notepad++ stability.

I'll modify the message to make them more clear.

Sorry, but what is the best way to remove them?
1. Close your Notepad++
2. Go to your Notepad++ install directory.
3. You'll find a directory named "plugins", rename it in whatever.
4. restart your Notepad++

IMO, deleting user files is just bad behavior... Especially since you're not
even offered a choice.

They could just be moved to another folder (i.e. plugins_disabled) instead.

Not only the messages should reflect the real issue, but there must be an option
to keep the plugin. I use both and was lucky enough not to get a crash so far.

If unicode NP++ finds an ANSI plugin, it gives you an option not to load it
while keeping it. If its installer finds a working plugin that does have some
issues in some cases the user may never bump into, it deletes the plugin without
an option. This looks inconsistent to me, and the fix seems simple enough -
add a "No" button to a std message box.
