Just one thing I learned while suffering through stomach flu last night
and today. It's also a great way to get in touch with your mortality!
There's something sobering about liquids gushing from 3 different orifices
simultaneously that lets you know you're not invincible.

I think I'll go to bed now.

I've had a diarhea so bad, I thought I was going to die, but obvious people
don't die that easily. Not even when you feel dehydrated and you don't see
things so clearly anymore.

The other near death experience was when I overworked myself on a stepping
machine. I programmed it to do some random workout. Being unfamiliar with
the difficult setting, I just picked something kind of difficult so I
didn't feel bored with it when I chose the easier setting. I guess my
competitiveness kicked in and wanted to beat the machine. My brother told
me to stop and I still didn't realize I overworked myself when I finally
stopped. When we arrived at his apartment, I couldn't even see things in
front of me anymore. My head was filled with so much blood, it must be,
that it blocked my vision, and that feeling of heavy-headedness lasted for
30-minutes. I couldn't sit, or I could die from a stroke. It felt like I
was drunk, btw, except I've never been so drunk, that I couldn't stand
straight, and vision so bright, that everything was just blurry white.

Actually that probably kills 100 of thousands of people each year world
wide, if not millions. No one dies of the primary symptoms of the flu.
They die from dehydration (or burst blood vessels from the retching.)

Me2. Whenever I watched a foreign film, I prefer to turn it to the
original language. Not only because of the translation problems (sometimes
they do a good job translating the stuff), but because voice actors are
often not good actors.... Emotional interpretation could be plain wrong
sometimes.

My mother is hard of hearing, so whenever she watches tv she turns on the
closed captioning. I can't stand the way they caption some shows... They
completely change the meaning of some sentences in order to make them
shorter.

My parents also bought a wide-screen tv but never actually use it properly
in wide screen mode, because zooming turns off the closed captioning. My
father seems to like making the 4:3 picture wider to fit the widescreen,
which makes everyone look fat but he refuses to leave the sides of the
screen unutilised. He also likes to fiddle around with the colours and
brightness/contrast throughout the show (if it's dark and he can't really
see what's going on, he turns the brightness way up - even if you're not
supposed to be able to see what's going on).

I don't like watching tv with my parents.

My parents and I watch TVs in seperate rooms. My brother and I watched
English programmings and my parents watch their Chinese TVs.... Now my
brother moved away, I rarely watch TV beside some Japanese dramas on DVD or
VCD, so we even canceled cable in that room.

Anyways, I heard on the radio the other day that some people are selling
earphones for people who are hard to hear. I guess it has to be some
wireless earphones that have independent volume control, so you might able
to get those for your mother and it'll solve one problem.

My father doesn't like stretched figure, so he used that resolution where
top and bottom would be cut off, and it always irks me much knowing
something that is there, but not seen.... Anyways..., I also turn up the
brightness when play dark games like Thief (not that I play it a lot,
because I can't play that kind of game much without getting motion
sickness). I guess I am awful.... But I don't watch movies with
brightness turned all the way up, because it ruins the picture.

They have a set of wireless headphones, but don't use them. We don't visit

the only thing my parents seem to do when we visit.

It's especially bad when the movie you're watching has already been "pan
and scan"ed to make it fullscreen, so you've already lost a large amount
of the picture.

I think it used to be a $5 surcharge for each extra room, but no more I
think (to be more competitive with satellite). But we canceled the whole
cable TV because we are now using satellite, but that spelled a lot of
trouble because of alignment thingy recently (must be the strong wind).

Okay, we already called the technician, and it's fixed now while I was
gone, and my father talked to the guy. The way my father described (may
not be accurate) it seems there is a connector box that was soaked with
water, so they fixed that. So everything is good now.

I don't think there is a lot of good stuff on TV nowadays. The few good
programs don't really worth the cost for us to pay for the monthly
subscription. It's interesting that good programs are now in premium
channels nowadays. There used to be a good numbers of good shows on
network TVs. I just use Internet. That's better than any Reality TV
show....

Not for me.... I am an almost classic adventure gamer. I hate action
sequences. But I am okay with them if they are only few in quantity and
nothing with very complicated hand-eye coordination. The real hardcore
old-school adventure gamers don't even tolerate any action sequence.

Interesting... I installed the satellite dish both times for my
father/parents (first at his "bachelor pad", then when they moved to their
current home) - I don't recall any connector boxes. I think you have a
variety that's designed to fail every so often, so you have to call and
pay technicians to come and fix it :P

I'm not sure how I would find out if there was a good show, since I don't
watch tv enough to see the teaser commercials. Maybe I've mentioned it
before, but the only shows I really watch are The Late Show, The Daily
Show and the occasional Monk or Law and Order (regular or CI, I really
dislike SVU).

We have two satellite dishes, you see. At first, my parents were
subscribing this Taiwanese TV thingy, and then the company got bought out
by Dish Network, so all the remaining annual subscription is now being
served by Dish Network. They installed another dish, and connected both
dishes up so we can have both U.S. programming and Chinese programming at
once (I guess the direction of the satellites are different). So they have
to have a box I guess.

For some odd reason, another guy came to fix it yesterday. It was a kid,
actually (I've never seen a technician who is below 30 years old, and this
kid looked like 16 or a very young 18). I told him we already got it
fixed, but he was confused and said maybe the previous guy wasn't a Dish
Network Contractor, but just to be safe, he needed to check the setup (so
he can tell the boss that he did his job). It was fine, but he offered to
put the box under the roof so it won't get soaked again. I said okay. The
weird thing is, the guy went to our backyard, and he said "This [the
backyard] could be good for a party" or something like that. I was like
"Huh?" But gave a wry grin.

There is no tech support whatsoever. I couldn't get on now since I lost my

My parents are still having trouble with universal remote control. They
ask rather frequently why they can't changed the channel anymore...,
because they accidentally hit the VCR button! They couldn't diagnose the
problem it seems. I think both of my parents know how to turn on and turn
off a computer by now, but nothting else.

My parents are still having trouble with universal remote control.
I _finally_ convinced my parents to just use 3 separate remotes - the TV
remote to control the colour/aspect/CC, the stereo receiver remote to
control the volume (this was the big one, actually)*, and the satellite
remote to change the channel.

* the reason why this was important was because they were jacking up the
receiver volume _really_ high, and keeping the tv/satellite volume really
low. This can really damage audio components.

I am lucky. The remote of the satellite TV also can change the volume
without hitting the TV button to change its volume. The TV's power button
is also on that remote. It also seems the VCR/DVD combo thingy my father
bought doesn't work with the satellite TV's remote, so I just tell them to
use both. Otherwise, it's a h*ll to teach them everything about how to use
stuffs that should be fairly straight forward. But somehow, they still ask
me for a certain stuff..., like when they accidentally hit the VCR or other
buttons... (or even when they accidentally hit the TV guide, but they just
don't know that's what the "cancel" key is for).

The way it's set up at my parents, it's possible to arrange it so that the
volume is adjustable from the satellite receiver, TV and audio receiver.
I think I locked the satellite volume to max, the TV I don't think could
be locked (another TV they have can) but the TV remote isn't used much.
The problem was that my parents could play around with the menus enough to
unlock the satellite receiver volume and then eventually it would be
around 40-50% after they play around for a while. Once I visited and
wondered what that low hissing noise was - it was coming from the speakers
(and everything except the audio receiver was off).

Uhh... Lots of records are still produced today. I've probably bought more
records in the last few months than cds (of course they've been relatively
old records vs. recent cds).

Besides, video cassettes are much more analogous to audio cassettes, which
have certainly mostly died off.

last paycheck is only $270 something. Do you think <$800 a month can
afford me a house??? How about food and other stuff???

But I don't live in a trailor park.
Don't you want to move out of your parents' house? Here's the perfect
opportunity! Maybe you can find a nice, eligible female who would like
someone to warm her fold-down cot :)

In Iowa, yes. In California, no, not unless you get some roommates.

Ethan Hawke? Well, he was sort of losing it when he started wanting to be

(no P0rn :-p Why porn addicts need high speed computer?). Actually, Hank
is still not built up..., because my schedule is so tight. I stayed up
until 3:00am the other day to build Hank. I had to work the next morning,
but still Hank is not done. I'd better be hurry, otherwise if any part is
defective, I can't make it to the 14-day return policy.

No you see there was this play by Neil Simon (not Paul right?) called
the Odd Couple. It is about two men flung together by circumstance to
become roomates Felix and Oscar. Felix IIRC is a neat freak while
Oscar is a slob, hilarity ensues. The play was made into a movie
starring again IIRC Jack Lemmon as Felix and Walter Mathow as Oscar.
There was also IIRC a TV series based on the idea of the play/movie.

That's kind of rude. Something is not meant to be said out loud.

Anyways, yesterday was hell of busy in Gap and the check out line formed
all the way almost to the entrance (and our store is one of the largest in
space and the second largest volume store in the region). Coincidentally,
I found the FMA (Financial Management Association) president of the time
when I was in the club. It was kinda awkward and I didn't know how to
approach him (and tell him that this was my real job?). He was one of the
most admirable people I know of. He aged a lot.... Must be the job he was
doing. The economics of this country is not doing good to most of us
people; ones with real jobs and ones without.

But anyways, Claus, my point is Poly has a point. You don't live in the
U.S. so I won't blame you for being ignorant. There /is/ some sort of
class system in the U.S..

I don't know about CA but here in Tornado Alley as it is called, it's
silly to choose to live in a trailer park.

You could drive a Winnebago and keep it parked in the hospital parking lot
though.

I guess I don't see anything inherently wrong with mobile homes, but they
don't offer the owner much chance to customize them. No basement or
attic. I bet the resale value isn't there. If you're renting a lot to
live on, you wouldn't have to pay property taxes, would you? That's my
biggest bill these days.

I don't think there is something wrong about mobile homes by itself. It's
just the environment around it is not exactly great. Ranmao was from a
mobile home. His previous breeder was sort of a hungry artist type, but a
nice person, not a white trash.

Yes, the property tax is easily the largest bill hand down. It's true here
also.

Uhh... Lots of records are still produced today. I've probably bought more
records in the last few months than cds (of course they've been relatively
old records vs. recent cds).
Thanks to the brainless house crowd, vinyl has a come-back.
Even most contemporary albums have a - though small - vinyl edition.

Me2. Whenever I watched a foreign film, I prefer to turn it to the
original language. Not only because of the translation problems (sometimes
they do a good job translating the stuff), but because voice actors are
often not good actors.... Emotional interpretation could be plain wrong
sometimes.
Watch some stuff dubbed with polish. Saw "Speed" once this way. There
is only one voice for all actors and he uses a faerie tale teller
voice.

Just one thing I learned while suffering through stomach flu last night
and today. It's also a great way to get in touch with your mortality!
There's something sobering about liquids gushing from 3 different orifices
simultaneously that lets you know you're not invincible.
I think I'll go to bed now.
Only three? Let's see...ears, eyes, nose, mouth, penis, anus. See,
that's five. You can do better. Try retching a bit harder next time!

Gollum, er, Poly is always helpful, yesssssss.

Sorry to hear that you're sick. I didn't get any flu vaccine this year.
But then I've only gotten it once before anyhow. I wonder if I will

the flu again? Hmmm.

Seriously, usually eyes are counted as orifices, because they sit on two

Yep, only an inch or so from the back of your eyes to the brain. I hear those
THC eyedrops for glaucoma are really fast-acting. From what I understand they
were trying desperately to find an isomer that worked that wasn't the Delta-9
that gets you high, but it turns out that that's the only one that's effective.

It's the tear-ducts that might count as orifices, FWIW. The rest of the

It looked photoshopped to me. Unless that guy had had his septum removed and
enlarged a tear duct to finger size that is pretty much impossible. Though I
did see a film once of a woman who could bug her eyes out so far, her eyelids
went behind her eyes. Creepy!

Ugh! That's truly one "handy" illustration.... Warn us next time okay?
What's the name of the picture? That's your warning! (Plus it was
submitted by Poly...)
It looked photoshopped to me. Unless that guy had had his septum removed and
enlarged a tear duct to finger size that is pretty much impossible. Though I
did see a film once of a woman who could bug her eyes out so far, her eyelids
went behind her eyes. Creepy!
Yeah, I've seen someone do that on TV. Just wait till they do that then
grab the eyes and don't let go! That'll teach 'em!

I figured that photo was fake but with 6 billion people who knows how many
have odd birth defects or have had injuries that might permit such a thing
to be possible? It just makes me think of how gross having a cold would
be. You thought a nose stud was bad during a cold, watch me blow my nose
OUT MY EYE SOCKET! :)

Well, you know most people if they try can blow air bubbles into their eyes
(not the eyeball itself mind you) or you might have heard of people spouting
liquid from their eyes if caught in a sudden spit take.

Yeah, that brings us full circle to the "vomiting from orifices" thread.

Oops, six. I can't count! Darn that spider, darn it to hell!!
...I'm not certain that eyes count as 'orifices'. (...not unless hairs do
as well...)
Sure they do - they're connected by the tear ducts to your throat just
like the ears are connected to it by the Eustachian tubes. Vomit tears!
How wonderful.

Yes, however the eardrum membrane keeps the ears from being true orifices,
unless they're punctured of course.

Sorry to hear that you're sick. I didn't get any flu vaccine this year.
But then I've only gotten it once before anyhow. I wonder if I will
survive the loss of my arm to a spider bite only to get sick and die from
the flu again? Hmmm.

In the Romero movies the zombies will try to eat you but they aren't
specifically after BRAINS.

Now I'm hungry. I wonder if we have any cauliflower?

The zombies don't talk or specifically make a point to eat brains in The
Night of the Living Dead... unless you're referring to some remake or
something.

I don't remember they talk either, but I faintly remember a movie where
ghouls must eat brains. It might be what Poly said, but I'm horrible at
remember stuff like that.

South Park? I have only seen one episode of that. Jesus vs Santa? I
don't know what the title was. It went around the USENET around 1997 or
so.

South Park undoubtedly was making a Return of the Living Dead reference.
It was the first movie to make the zombie=brain eaters connection I think.
Of course RotLD was a pseudo-parody/remake of the Romero zombie movies.

How many times have you died from the flu before?

Just so we are clear. Influenza is a respiratory disease. A "stomach
flu" is not the flu. Further the reason you have to get flu shots
every year is because the flu possesses mutant powers far beyond those
of ordinary viruses (the flu is like the X-men of viruses) so that
each year a couple of new strains appear to infect mankind. The
vaccine developpers try to guess which strains will be a hit this year
and prepare a vaccine for them. They are not always right in their
prediction. Also, flu vaccines are not one hundred percent effective
IIRC so even if you get the right vaccine you may still get the flu
although your symptoms may be mitigated (you will probably not get as
sick as you would have). People already sick are at greatest risk from
the flu and lots of elderly people are hastened to their graves by it
in North America.

Ironically because of all the news about an American vaccine run that
went bad leaving a shortage vaccination for the flu is up here in
Canada.

Actually it wasn't too bad. Siana was hit a few days earlier, but the
night it hit me it also hit our 2yo daughter. Luckily she didn't suffer
from any diarrhea. The infant seems to have evaded it completely (but of
course he pukes every 1-3 days anyway, and his poop is always runny - just
like an infant's should be).

I don't think I've ever gotten it... Not that it would have helped, as
