Gang of EIGHTY crowbar-wielding looters in ski masks ransack California Nordstrom and fill 25 cars with designer goods in raid lasting less than one minute

Meanwhile in San Francisco, further down in the same article:
Walgreens has already closed at 17 of its 70 San Francisco stores because of constant shoplifting. One of the stores closing, pictured above, was subject of a viral video showing a man filling a garbage bag full of goods as security guards watched and let him go

The surge in shoplifting arose after a local law downgraded the theft of property less than $950 in value from a felony charge to a misdemeanor in 2014

Downtown San Francisco would eventually look like downtown Detroit; but with the cost of brick and mortar retail stores so high, more of us just shop on line.

Why do they still qualify for misdemeanors when they're holding crowbars? And the $950 threshold should be for an individual, why aren't they consolidating the total cost of stolen merchandise by the whole gang and charge them with felonies? Our state is fucked up. I remember when these issues were on the ballot.

This makes me think. Are some of the Muslim people right? Should we cut the hands off of these mutherfuckers? I bet they'd stop stealing.

They could display the hands at the entrance as legal notice.

There are two different stories in that article which is sloppy journalism. The $950 threshold is in San Franciso. The mass robbery was in Walnut Creek across the Bay.

It's pretty pathetic when Walgreen's, in the San Francisco story, has apparently instructed their security guards to not intervene when someone just casually ransacks the store and then nonchalantly leaves.

I thought the $950 threshold was a change in the penal code enacted in some ballot measure a few years ago. I don't remember. But I'd think it would be statewide. No?

No point in intervening when the crime won’t be prosecuted, but it’s the
same in many places in LV. Security guards are told not to intervene by store
owners, but it’s mostly for liability reasons.

40 years ago I was in Houston, lived in an apartment. About 4 one morning the security guard knocked on my door to tell me that he watched someone steal the tailgate off my pickup. Thanks, job well done.

You're lucky they didn't leave the tailgate and take the rest.

I guess the stupidity of security guards and companies is nothing new. Over
the last several years, they have gotten away from calling the service they
provide, “security”. They now carefully make it clear that they provide
“courtesy patrols”. In fact, Floyd Mayweather is a good example of why
they don’t like to do anything more than be visible. It used to start with
presence as a deterrent, then verbal commands, then possible physical
intervention. They pretty much all stop at “presence” these days. If you
want intervention, you pretty much need to hire armed guards, with all the
attendant risks.

Stupid as in not getting involved with somebody twice your size? Only to
be arrested and imprisoned; like Officer Chavin?
