Discussion:
substitute for Todd battery chargers [RE-wrenches]

What choices do we have to replace Todd battery chargers (no longer
available as far as I can tell).
Schott Applied Power is now selling IOTA chargers.
Any experience with these or other substitutes?

The IOTA is almost an exact replacement for the Todd, same
constant-voltage output, same size. Small wonder, since most of the Todd
engineers now work at Iota. Prices are fairly close, a bit cheaper on
the 30 & 55 amp sizes, a bit more on the 75 amp size. Iota even has a
24v model. No more lifetime warranty, but a reasonable 2-year warranty.
We've been selling them for 2-3 months with no problems yet.

Hi Wrenches and Doug,

Thank you for the help with the 3 phase generator, stacked inverter
issue. Thanks especially to Bill Roush for putting us on the track of
industrial chargers through Total Source. They connected us to Mountain
Power and Communications (303)935-5901, who has a line of chargers that
could be appropriate for off grid installations. These chargers are made
by Yuasa Exide. They have many high amperage, 120 volt models.

We might have found a battery charger to balance out the 120/208 3 phase,
25 KW Kohler. There might be some technical difficulties with the
unit. We still need to locate a factory rep. We also don't know the price
yet.

The 24 volt Iota chargers look like they might also be a possible option.

Can you run the Iota battery chargers in parallel? We would probably run
5, 25 amp, 24 volt chargers in parallel. They would also be in parallel
with 2 Trace SW 4024 inverters. We would be using the Iota chargers to
balance the windings of the three phase generator.

The Iota chargers are rated as constant voltage chargers. Are the Trace
SW4024 inverters rated closer to constant current? Would this make the
Iota chargers drop off their charging rate faster? (Or would it make an
iota of difference?)

What is the AC amperage input to the Iota DLS 24-25 Hi-Volt Charger?

Thanks much for your help.

Drake, Just a note, with 2 SW4024s and 5 Iota chargers, is your total C/
rate within capacity for the batteries you are using? You will have about
300A input @24V. At about a C/8 max, that takes 2500 Ahrs of battery.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your input. This system was bought and installed before we got
called in to "make it work." It is a monster, for sure. I wish we had
input in the beginning, as "small is beautiful" as far as I am concerned,
especially when it comes to battery banks.

When we went to investigate hooking up the generator we discovered that not
only was it a three phase unit, but its control box was cooked. It is a
used 25/30 KW Kohler with low hours, but is decades old. He got it for $5K.

This is another case of a person saving a few bucks initially by not
getting help with the design, and suffering later. He probably got a very
good deal on the equipment.

The system is in a block building, far away from the site of the future
house. The batteries are on very sturdy wooden shelves. They seem
stable. The owner is an architect, so hopefully they are designed carry
the weight. The system was set up by another electrical contracting
outfit, and approved by inspectors before we saw it.

A third inverter might be the way to go. May be a better plan would be for
the owner to sell off some of the batteries and the 3 phase generator and
buy a single phase gen-set. We are on time to help get the loads to the
house, as of yet unbuilt, suitable for an off grid system.

Thanks for the food for thought.

Drake,
Have I got this correct? 9 Strings of L-16's? Did you put this monster
together and how do you ever get it to charge it evenly?
I sure hope it is on a concrete floor, at 4428# + connectors ( probably at
least a 100 # of connectors) it would be hell on most wood floors!
I have added 2nd inverters just to have the charging capacity in the past,
have you thought about just adding a third to help balance the third leg?
But you are putting a ton of strain on your major + and - terminals. Hook
them up at diagonally opposite corners and figure out how to handle the
shunt.
Instead of a bunch of other chargers just get another inverter strictly as a
charger. I have used Hearts in the past to do this job with success.
A Heart 2524 would probably cost you under a grand or so, I can't help but
think the other chargers would be more than that. It also gives you an
emergency inverter if the you know what hits the fan.
Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those....

Hello gang, we've had a recent rash of formatted and/or html text recently. There is enough of it that I wanted to give a little how to.

I use Eudora Pro. Eudora has a setting that is "Send Plain Text Only" that will take care of everything.

If you are using a version of Microsoft Outlook (somebody told me about these, I have no experience with Outlook), then you need to set two settings. 1st there is one that is something like "Plain Text" and that needs to be selected. Then there is another that says something like "respond in the same format" and that needs to be unchecked.

OK, got it? If any questions, please respond to me off list and I will try to figure it out.

If I am sending formatted text, I do not know about it. Please tell
me if this is the case. I cannot see it, because for me it is
automatically displayed correctly. Before I had Eudora 5.0 I would
get irritated by other people who sent html gibberish, but now it's
probably me doing it - I don't even know. I never see any gibberish
from others either. In fact it's quite nice having up-to-date

Hi Drake,

I was away, so my response is late.

I have found that with the cost of big battery chargers, the SW just as a
battery charger isn't a bad idea and is cost effective too.

I have installed a few of the iota chargers and my friend has tried to blow
them up with no luck, so they seem pretty good right now.

Drake, Just a note, with 2 SW4024s and 5 Iota chargers, is your total C/
rate within capacity for the batteries you are using? You will have about
300A input @24V. At about a C/8 max, that takes 2500 Ahrs of battery.

Hi Wrenches and Doug,
The 24 volt Iota chargers look like they might also be a possible option.
Can you run the Iota battery chargers in parallel? We would probably run
5, 25 amp, 24 volt chargers in parallel. They would also be in parallel
with 2 Trace SW 4024 inverters. We would be using the Iota chargers to
balance the windings of the three phase generator.

David,

We've had an Iota 24 V unit in service for about 6 months now, off grid
charging a small bank from a generator. Not full time duty, as they do have
some PV, but you know how the weather's been here!

No problems to date. Simple and easy to install.

What choices do we have to replace Todd battery chargers (no longer

Schott Applied Power is now selling IOTA chargers.
Any experience with these or other substitutes?

Iota will dial your charger up to any (reasonable) voltage setting you want.
Just specify on your purchase order. In addition, each charger has a high/low
output setting with about 0.6v difference. We're stocking "sealed battery
units" at 13.4-14.0v, and "wet cell units" at 14.8-15.5v.

Hi David,

We've had several years of experience selling the IOTA chargers (along with
the Todd). The IOTA have proven quite reliable and the pricing is typically
a little better.

Also, the IOTA units do not have the annoying problem that the last version
of the Todd had where the cooling fan would operate whenever the Todd got
hotter than about 85-90 F. This would happen even if the charger was not
actually operating; the fan and thermo-sensor operated off battery power and
would actually become a net drain on the battery. Todd did not seem to think
that this was a problem. Perhaps that is one of the reasons Todd is no
longer with us.

Sincerely,
Steve Bell

Hi David
I recently purchased a 75amp @12 volt Iota charger through Schott Applied
Power. I called Iota at 800-866-IOTA and spoke with Chris in tech service.
He is going to adjust my unit for 14.8-15.4 before shipping. I understand
the smaller units are adjustable as well. Chris was very helpful, give him a
call.

Concern on IOTA chargers. Are they available in voltage outputs other than
13.2/14.2? That is what Schott is listing.

The owner is an architect, so hopefully they are designed carry
the weight. The system was set up by another electrical contracting
outfit, and approved by inspectors before we saw it. Go figure, better fuse
that pack, 1 fuse every couple strings. I sure would hate to see it run
away.....

A third inverter might be the way to go. May be a better plan would be for
the owner to sell off some of the batteries and the 3 phase generator and
buy a single phase gen-set. That is the way to go if the option is
available.
We are on time to help get the loads to the
house, as of yet unbuilt, suitable for an off grid system. Now THAT I like
to hear, I regularly sound like a broken record when I try to get people to
cut power use and get efficient appliances. I probably lose more system
sales because of that than any other reason. They accuse me of lying when I
tell them that I average 111 kWh a month and could cut more, but am close to
the point of diminishing returns.

Later,
Bob

Thanks for the food for thought.

Drake,
Have I got this correct? 9 Strings of L-16's? Did you put this monster
together and how do you ever get it to charge it evenly?
I sure hope it is on a concrete floor, at 4428# + connectors ( probably at
least a 100 # of connectors) it would be hell on most wood floors!
I have added 2nd inverters just to have the charging capacity in the past,
have you thought about just adding a third to help balance the third leg?
But you are putting a ton of strain on your major + and - terminals. Hook
them up at diagonally opposite corners and figure out how to handle the
shunt.
Instead of a bunch of other chargers just get another inverter strictly as

charger. I have used Hearts in the past to do this job with success.
A Heart 2524 would probably cost you under a grand or so, I can't help but
think the other chargers would be more than that. It also gives you an
emergency inverter if the you know what hits the fan.
Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those....

Hi all,
I''ve heard an unsubstantiated rumor that the U.L. listing on the 4024SW
inverter might be pulled because of its relatively unclean power. Has
anyone else heard anything about this?
Both grid tie systems we have done so far (with 4024SW inverters) required
the local power companies engineer to come out and put a scope on the
output. When he compared it to the grid it was much less clean. It
obviously met parameters in both cases, though, because they passed the
installation and installed the meter.
Anyway, thoughts?

I'm not surprised at the unclean results from the power companies meters. I
just ran my 4024 through an o'scope test and it came back with varying THD
from 3% to almost 7% depending on the load. What makes it noisy, as my
friend wielding the meter informed me, is the harmonics on the Trace. There
are a lot of high frequency variations that you wouldn't ordinarily see on
the grid and it is probably those that cause the noise problems. He checked
his grid and found worse THD on the grid and much less stable voltage but
also far less "noise" than on the Trace.

I recently drove out to the Olympic penninsula to resolve a customer
complaint about excessive radio noise from a SW4024. He had complained to me
and to the factory for a year, wanting one of us to come witness the
problem. I went with a replacement inverter of identrical type and a
ProSine 3.0. This customer was a ham radio operator with oscilloscope on
site, so we looked at waveform and harmonics, inspected the grounding system
and wiring, and compared inverters for interference on various receivers.

The grounding was very well done, wiring was up to code, all components
close together. The received interference was radiated mostly from home
wiring which was romex normal installation. Metal conduit might have
restricted some of the radiated noise, but had not been used in this now

Daryl,

It is a rumor so please don't spread it. I have heard it from several
sources, and it is not true. Even if there was any truth to it, UL would
never leak that kind of information. They are bound by confidentiality with
their clients. The equipment either has the listing lable or it doesn't.
There is no middle ground.

Bill.

obviously met parameters in both cases, though, because they passed the
installation and installed the meter.
Anyway, thoughts?

David,

We've had an Iota 24 V unit in service for about 6 months now, off grid
charging a small bank from a generator. Not full time duty, as they do have
some PV, but you know how the weather's been here!

No problems to date. Simple and easy to install.

Sincerely,
Steve Bell

Chris was very helpful, give him a
call.

Hi all,
I''ve heard an unsubstantiated rumor that the U.L. listing on the 4024SW
inverter might be pulled because of its relatively unclean power. Has
anyone else heard anything about this?
Both grid tie systems we have done so far (with 4024SW inverters) required
the local power companies engineer to come out and put a scope on the
output. When he compared it to the grid it was much less clean. It
obviously met parameters in both cases, though, because they passed the
installation and installed the meter.
Anyway, thoughts?

Daryl,

It is a rumor so please don't spread it. I have heard it from several
sources, and it is not true. Even if there was any truth to it, UL would
never leak that kind of information. They are bound by confidentiality with
their clients. The equipment either has the listing lable or it doesn't.
There is no middle ground.

Bill.
