I have the Karajan Ring cycle on DG Originals which if I read correctly was remastered in 1989. Does anyone know if the Eloquence reissue is a new remastering - the blu ray seems to be OOP.

The Originals is from 1998.

I wonder if the Eloquence is later and better

It's certainly later - it was issued in 2016. As for the sonics, I compared it back then to the Originals issue. While I noted some improvement, it was pretty subtle, and I'm sure that it'd be hard to detect on any non-high end audio system.

Hmmm sounds like not worth replacing; haven't heard any of the blu ray though

The blu-ray shows a modest improvement in overall fidelity, but it also reveals more deficiencies in the original tape and engineering. So it’s somewhat of a mixed bag in my opinion.

It's always sounded pretty good, in a slightly antiseptic &
over-reverberant kind of way. If somebody (Pristine?) could so some work
on a live Karajan Ring that might be a more interesting prospect - I
have the Salzburg performances on Memories and the poor stereo sound
"feels" like it has more to give ...

There's the first DG release on CDs, made in West Germany.
Maybe the first CD release has the best sound of all?
Why assume that later mastering is better?

I'm not assuming. I've listened to all three RBCD issues, and compared them.

The Karajan Ring is available on HD FLAC 96 remastered download - quite impressive.

For your comparison, I uploaded the fragment from the First Act of Gotterdammerung in four different versions.

1) LP transfer
2) First CD transfer from 1989
3) Second CD transfer from 1998 (AKA The Originals)

4) 24/96 Hi-Res Download (which is the same remastering as the Blu-ray edition)
https://mega.nz/#!RSQCGCYZ!XQbNwM806r4ZPrc8kxLGJGqNHAaDZ-ed9fKdTIFPsXk

It is my understanding that the Eloquence reissue contains the Red Book version of the recent Hi-Res/Blu-ray remastering (correct me if I am mistaken).

Each subsequent digital version is superior to the previous one IMO, but the differences are subtle.

Contrary to the advertisement, the recent Die Walkure Blu-ray+CD combo is the same 24/96 remastering as the complete Ring published on Blu-ray previously.

Here are the scans from the stand-alone Die Walkure box:

And ditto for the Kleiber Freischütz: same as the previous Kleiber complete recordings blu-ray.

The Karajan DG Blu-Ray Ring is not out of print.

I believe the master for the Blu-Ray release was the white box DG German Eloquence:

Ignore the warning posted on the Amazon website:
"Playback Region 1 :This will not play on most DVD players sold in the U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada, and Bermuda. See other DVD options under “Other Formats & Versions”."
This is not DVD - Blu-Ray Audio is region-free
