He released his latest album and performed at the Grand Ol' Opry less than a month ago . Known best for the 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie", he also wrote Brook Benton's huge 1970 hit "Rainy Night In Georgia".

While "Rainy Night in Georgia" has justifiably achieved status as a standard, I always detested his big hit; can anyone herein defend "Polk Salad Annie" as a hit parade classic?

As a “hit parade” classic? No.

As a borderline novelty song, with a great southern, bluesy feel? Yes.

Yup, a single reaching #8 on Billboard is definitely a big hit. Most would also consider it a classic these days.

He also remade it for a McRib commercial, which ain't too shabby. All I
remember is ...

A little pickle,
A little onion,
Chomp!

How can you *not* love a song with lyrics like "A wretched, spiteful,
straight-razor totin' woman"?...r
