Hasn't driver-safety come a long way since then ! Today inconceivable
that a solid concrete wall would be in the runoff area of a high-speed
corner. Not to mention the in-car mandated safety features.

And the 'halo' device which I initially loathed, I guess on largely
aesthetic grounds, has not proved to be so untenable after all.

I agree. I also did not like the halo, I really thought that taking
away even an inch of a drivers view was not a good thing at those
speeds....but it has worked out, so yeah...I can admit I was wrong.
People also complained about the Hans device, when it started in CART
and in all other series since....but it is widely accepted today and
has saved many lives I am sure.
