Discussion:
[Framers] Just Starting w/FM 2019: Interface

Hi Framers,

Is there a document or online resource about customizing FM 2019 defaults?
I am test-jumping from FM v11, so not familiar with any of the interim
interface versions. I can't abide giant/full-screen start-up screens or
galleries in apps, so just hoping to clean up what I'm forced to see in the
new interface.

Also want to learn how to position/size windows. As a Mac user (using FM in
a VM), I frequently want to see multiple windows at a time; I do have two
screens but don't care if viewing takes place on one or both. Might I need
the newest Parallels to achieve this?

Thanks for any help,
Karen

Each new release only has info about the features in that specific release.

There are a set of on line tutorials about 2019 on the Adobe site.

They also deal with changes in the interface, so should probably provide
the info you need.
However, if you want info about something that changed earlier, you need to
find the release videos from the previous releases.

I made a very big jump in versions. In the end I found that I had to look
at info from each previous release to fully take advantage of some of the
new features introduced.

...As a quick follow-up, installing 2019 has broken both it and 2011
versions: windows and dialogs don't render (are blank), and menus don't
stay visible when clicked (thus nothing can be selected). Not to mention
the app font has shrunk and faded so it's barely visible.

I guess the more important question is how do I get back to where I was,
and how can I prevent this from happening again just to try out (the
purchased) 2019?

Oy!

Thanks,
Karen

Karen, I can't believe this.
On my system W7 x64 I have all FM versions from 6 to 15 (2019) installed (and
working).
Of course to work with, say FM-11, I can not simply double click an FM file - this
always opens the last installed one.
Each FM version installs into its own directory and creates new registry entries
(besides changing some common ones). Also the user area (with maker.ini etc) is
separate.

I don't know what question to ask You to help you out here.
Klaus

Thanks Klaus and Mayank, I think we have solved the broken apps.

This problem didn't reveal itself when only FM11 was installed. Once we
added FM2019, a conflict arose with Windows scaling (running inside
Parallels VM). When that was reset to a resolution it could handle (instead
of my big Mac Retina display resolution), everything seemed to work. There
is a trade-off: without the scaling, version 11 looks fuzzy and someone
squished unless enlarged to 400%. But we expect to eventually work through
all our legacy files that may need that version as a bridge to FM2019, at
which point it won't matter any more. If anyone knows of a workaround for
this, I'd be grateful to hear it.

My colleague (on a Windows machine) will be getting new equipment with both
versions installed shortly. Based on your info and what I learned here, I
doubt he'll have this same issue; but if he does, at least I know where to
look for a solution.

Now, back to the new interface....

Best regards and always appreciative,
Karen

I think what I've had to do is consistent with what you found, although
I didn't have quite the same display issues as you did. But
menus/displays weren't functional enough to actually use the product.
I have FrameMaker 2015 (as part of that era's Technical Communication
Suite), and I'm running it on a Windows 10 VM through Parallels on my
MacBook, with a 30" Dell monitor at 2560x1600. So not a Retina display,
but high enough resolution that it seems to require the same display
settings massaging as if it were.
So for FrameMaker, I had to select "Override high DPI scaling behavior.
Scaling performed by: System" in the shortcut properties >
Compatibility tab.
Just mentioning this in case it makes more sense to you Framers gurus
than it does to me. (I'm not using FrameMaker for current work, but I
do rather routinely want to look at something I've written during my
FrameMaker days.)

Thanks for the tip! I'll add that approach to my notes.

Best,
Karen
