Hi all

This is first time I am playing with WSUS. I have done some reading which
seems quite simple to set up. After all the installation and GPO setting i
don't see computers.

I downloded the doc file which was available with the WSUS and read through
it.

Here is what i did.

1. Installed IIS
2. Installed WSUS.
3. Synchronized the server.
4. Implemented GPO settings and ran gpupdate /force on my machine.
GPO Settings.
a. Load the WSUS Administrative Template.
b. Configure Automatic Updates
c. Point client computers to your WSUS server.
d. Manually initiate detection on the client computer.
5 Restarted the computer.

Its not working and i don't know what else to do. Can someone please help me
on this.

I know is is an older thread, but i've got the same problem.
Here's what i have done:

1. Setup WSUS on the server, confirmed it lists lots of updates and no
clients are listed
3. Did NOT synchronize the server (i'm not the admin of that machine)
4. Implemented GPO settings (on my local client pc) and ran gpupdate /force
on my machine.
GPO Settings.
a. Load the WSUS Administrative Template.
b. Configure Automatic Updates
c. Point client computers to your WSUS server.
5 Restarted the computer.
6. Confirmed a website exists on the server by typing \\servername
7. Ran cscript WSUS install ---systempath--- InstallSelfupdateonport80.vbs

*Since i had previously updated all my client machines manually, on my own
pc i uninstalled a windows update that appears on the WSUS server's list of
updates.
Rebooted. No luck.

1. Setup WSUS on the server, confirmed it lists lots of updates and no
clients are listed
Which probably means none are configured to look at this server.

3. Did NOT synchronize the server (i'm not the admin of that machine)
How did you "set up WSUS then"

4. Implemented GPO settings (on my local client pc) and ran gpupdate /force

GPO Settings.
a. Load the WSUS Administrative Template.
b. Configure Automatic Updates
How?, What settings?
Post by Jman0war
c. Point client computers to your WSUS server.
Who's server?
Post by Jman0war
5 Restarted the computer.
6. Confirmed a website exists on the server by typing \\servername
When you would find no content for WSUS as there is no default content installed
by WSUS
Post by Jman0war
7. Ran cscript WSUS install ---systempath--- InstallSelfupdateonport80.vbs
But you are not the admin.

I was expecting my computer to appear in WSUS computer list.
Also when i run Windows Update from the start menu (wupdmgr.exe)
It opens to the default microsoft update website; should it rather check for
updates from \\servername?

Please post the last hundred lines or so from WindowsUpdate.log on an affected
client. Also run the Client Diagnostics Tool and post the results.

On Windows XP, no; on Windows Vista, yes.

Looks like WSUS isn't installed at the URL specified. Can you access that URL
via Internet Explorer?

What port number is WSUS installed on? If it isn't port 80, you need to specify
the port number in the client group policy settings.

No i can't open that in IE.

Well, on the server when i fire up WSUS i see it's at:
http://mbk102:8530/WSUSAdmin/
So i guess it's on port 8530, just put that in my client's local GP.
We'll see how it goes.

*Since i had previously updated all my client machines manually, on my own
pc i uninstalled a windows update that appears on the WSUS server's list of
updates.
Eh?
Sorry didn't see that til now.
One theory i entertained was, since all the client machines were fully
updated, maybe they won't appear in the WSUS computer list because they are
missing no updates. So by uninstalling one update from Add/Remove Programs,
my client machine is now missing an update that appears in WSUS list of
updates.

How did you "set up WSUS then"
Sorry, i do have admin rights to our server, however i am not the main admin
and he doesn't approve of my installing windows updates on the server. So our
server is not patched and i didn't patch it.
Post by DaveMills
How?, What settings?
On my client:
-Specify Intranet Microsoft update service location
-Configure Automatic Updates
-Automatic Update detection frequency
I changed the settings according to "Set up a Client Computer" from the Help
file.

I also has this problem.

I installed a WSUS 3.0 SP1 server for two months but still some computers
cannot be added to the console.

I use grouping to group computers and use GPO's "client side targeting" to
specify the group name. In one of the groups, I can count 23 computer objects
in the corresponding OU of AD but there are only 20 objects in the
corresponding WSUS group.

In one of the missing PC, the ClientDiag result shows:

Please advise.

Hi

There may be some different solutions.

1- Please take the computer from domain to workgroup, and change its
hostname and rejoin it to domain.
Than apply the policy for wsus again. If it s successful, your client may
have SID conflict. than you can change their SID ( you can find newsid.exe
from site http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspx )

2- If first answer didnt work, try to delete files under
C:\windows\system32\wbem\Repository ) You must stop WMI service , I advise
you restart and while starting the service delete files.

and try again.

good luck

I´m also new in the WSUS world. I tryed to install it in a old server with
Windows server 2003 and I always had errors. So I decided to install WSUS in
a new server.

I did everything that the documentation says, but I still cannot see
computer in the console..

Here is the result of the Client Diagnostic Tool:

I´m also new in the WSUS world. I tryed to install it in a old server with
Windows server 2003 and I always had errors. So I decided to install WSUS in
a new server.
I did everything that the documentation says, but I still cannot see
computer in the console..
Checking Connection to WSUS/SUS Server
AU does not have Policy Set
AU does not have Policy Set
UseWuServer is disabled . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . FAIL
You have not properly configured Group Policy (or Local Policy).

I also cannot Browse the WSUS web page...
That's because there is no web page to browse.

Can someone help me? I've been with the problem 2 months now..
I get the impression you've not spent a lot of time reading the
documentation.

I'd suggest starting here:

Step By Step Guide
[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939822(WS.10).aspx]
I believe you'll find Step #5 to cover the portions you've missed.

Deployment
Guide ]http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939906(WS.10).aspx]

The section "Determine a Method to Configure Clients" covers the steps
you're missing:
