30 Minutes To Change 2008 Election
by Tag Heuer
In a few hours Democrat Presidential candidate Barack Obama will
address voters via various television networks, CNN and ABC excluded,
in a highly controversial and costly campaign manuever as far as
political advertisements go. It is unprecedented in recent political
history, yet one that has the Palin-McCain campaign scrambling for
those battleground states which they presume are winnable. More
interesting is the point that surrogates and McCain are reduced to
complaining how "Obama had broken his promise not to take public
funding," and of which is falling on deal ears as the shouts of
"Socialist!" and "Terrorist!" including racial epithets are heard
throughout their campaign stumps and rallies.
To his credit Obama will take this 30-minutes of campaign ad time to
abbreviate his platform and vision of his candidacy and campaign as
well as offering up a few surprises - One which is now been 'leaked'
and known is the appearance of former-President Wm. Jefferson Clinton.
The Horror: These 30-minutes may seem like an eternity to the McCain
campaign whose own message of "change" and "mavericky-ness" and the
run-of-the-mill smear will presumably have to take notice, and with
just under six days remaining till the election this moment with all
the other rhetoric and gimmicks and melodrama will simply have to sit
still.
Not exactly CBS' patented "60 Minutes" program but half in terms
30-minutes ... Now this is a long time as far as pol-ads go, and with
Erik Smith, a former-Dick Gephardt political advisor, and Mark Putnam,
a media consultant, of whom CNN's Mark Halperin has recently dubbed
the one or two of the "Five Most Important People in American Politics
Not Running for President," finishing up the editing on this
advertisement may turn out to be a masterpiece and stroke of political
genius, if not marketing in general.
This 4-5 million dollar expense is but a drop in the proverbial
'bucket' and the Obama-Biden campaign war-chest, and what is more
interesting is that the Republican/GOP effort for the Palin-McCain
campaign had to secure a loan of the same amount in dealing with
expenditures in the northwest front of this battle.
The Competion: What is much more interesting, other than the whine
from McCain over "broken promises" and over Obama not accepting public
fund, which but a faint whimper in the face of a potential electoral
tsunami, is the fact that the management of Osama's campaign is
running firmly and smoothly like a well-oiled engine firing cleanly
and succinctly on "all twelve" of a Ferrari 612 Scarlatti coupe -
Whereas the sound of sporadic back-firing of the severely rusted, and
bald tires of the Palin-McCain '73 Ford 'Maverick' sub-compact is
leaking oil and belching smoke, in the twelve battle ground states of
MT, ND, MO, IN, OH, PA, NC, GA, NV, VA, FL, and possibly AK, and where
Osama's campaign paid staff and volunteers are numbered in the
hundreds, and where McCain's are nickels and dimes.
The Obama-Biden campaign has out-spent and out maneuvered the
Palin-McCain ticket 2-1, if not three-to-one in their campaign
strategy (or is it, tactic?) in this quest for the Whitehouse, and for
the closing moments of this campaign are without doubt very close to
'closing the deal,' with the voters. However, and as Democrat has
repeatedly warned his supporters, "Let's not get cocky!" Instead,
what he has done, and done effectively is to continue on message and
delivering rhetoric and a platform unlike the vitriolic and negative
ones that the McCain campaign is now wagering it's entire political
survival on.
The Comedy: Some may recall H. Ross Perot who did something similar
during the '92 Presidential election, and who in retrospect was quite
the character in presenting charts, and graphs and political and
comedic - And enough to capture 18% of the Popular Vote and zero EC
votes. However, this is no "comedy" by any stretch of the
imagination. This is quite the "Trick-o-Treat" for the McCain
campaign and or a potential nightmare of historic proportions.
The Human Drama of Political Competition (apologies to ABC Sports):
Obama will present himself, and his vision tonight. Many may not
watch, or perhaps many will and regardless of what this may have on
the Electorate come November 4, this will certainly become the
standard by which future campaigns will consider, and where Obama (the
consummate political science student) has learned from past mistakes,
and victories, in speaking to the issues and challenges facing
America, and rather than 'making it up.'
-
" ... Because he [John McCain] knows that his economic theories don't
work, he's spending these last few days calling me every name in the
book ... I don't know what's next?! By the end of the week, he'll be
accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in
kindergarten. I shared my, uh, peanut butter and jelly sandwich ..."
