I'm still on it, heard too many people having problems with updating to SP2
so I've given it a miss.

Dunno. If you computer isn't connected then you probably don't need the enhanced
security. I am quite annoyed that a multimedia VB6 course I have no longer runs
on SP2. Yes, I have already tried everything... However, it runs fine on
an old laptop XP SP0, but that is only 450Mhz.

I really hope you're not implying I'm thick, pal, because that's one thing
I'm definitely not. If I choose not to upgrade to SP2 that is my decision.
My PC runs perfectly well the way it is, I don't need any more bloatware
than it already has with Windows. So please enlighten us all, exalted one,
and explain why I and the so called misinformed 10% according to you, should
upgrade to SP2? I await with baited breath.

Lets see...

Bloatware. Windows XP2 TURNS OFF a shedload of services than SP1
doesn't.

Better security.

Shedload of bugfixes.

Shedload of IE6 fixes.

Don't use it, so won't help me.
But alot of Windows does, such as HTML help and Windows Explorer.

It was a bloody stupid post. The average post on here is about 3KB. Was
yours worth forty of those? No. It wasn't worth a light. You had abandoned
any attempt to inform, it was just a clever-dick jibe aimed at shutting up a
blasphemer against the Law of Gates.
Actually, not that it's any of your fucking business, I have got broadband.
And you have got a problem - you are a point-scoring prat. Go boil your
bollocks.

Anyone still on it?
*too scared to up date my main PC (in case of it going tits up) *
Tim..
I'm still on it, heard too many people having problems with updating to SP2
so I've given it a miss.
Redman
lol. how thick do you have to be to believe this :/
90% of win xp uses are now successfully using sp2. Leaving 10% misinformed
muppets.
Redman
conors already helped you out.

'youve heard too many people have problems" these are all your mates i
presume who must be as clueless as yourself if they can't work out how to
update correctly.
By all means don't update, but claiming the reason is because /so many/
people are having problems is ridiculous. I hope you don't pass on
your limited pc knowledge to friends and family, I'm surprised you're not
still on Win95.

fwiw my original point wasn't for you to apply sp2. nonetheless instead of

keep deflecting it back to me. My motto as I've said elsewhere, if it ain't

No you miss the point. Read my first post again. Now substantiate your
advice to the OP with a list of these problems and why SP1 is better than
Sp2.

To babysit you again and answer your other question, already answered
several times, read again the SP2 update list and advantages it provides
over
SP1.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113/
Also bear in mind when your giving your floored advice to your family
and friends (god help them) that a number of windows software's now require
SP2 to run.

It it aint broke don't fix it would apply to all software updates. I guess
you advise people not
to run any windows or software updates of any kind.
You should let Microsoft know that its all working and there is no need for
them to release any more updates :/

My advice to you, don't reply to any more computer related posts. If
anyone asks you
for advice, just be honest and tell them you're a clueless ass

Yeah but you miss the point, IT'S MY PC, if I don't want to update to SP2
then I won't. You still haven't given me one good reason why I should, you
keep deflecting it back to me. My motto as I've said elsewhere, if it ain't
broke, don't fix it.
Redman
No you miss the point. Read my first post again. Now substantiate your
advice to the OP with a list of these problems and why SP1 is better than
Sp2.
Where in my advice to the OP did I say that SP1 was better than SP2. That
seems to be your assumption. I said I didn't use it, due to the fact that I
had problems AFTER I installed it and reverted back to SP1 and have stayed
with that setup ever since, with no problems whatsoever I might add. In fact
if Xp on it's own had recognised my 200Gb slaved HDD I would probably never
have updated to SP1.

It it aint broke don't fix it would apply to all software updates. I guess
you advise people not
to run any windows or software updates of any kind.
It's not a bad rule, generally. I see a lot of cases where new
application or driver versions cause serious problems that weren't
present before. If you already have a system that does everything you
want without issues, it's not wise to tinker needlessly with it.

Windows service packs are arguably another matter because Microsoft do
at least test them thoroughly. However, installing SP2 on an "unclean"
system is a risk.

If they were that common they'd have been fixed in SP1. The only two
bugs I recall fixing with SP2 were a slow network-share access issue and
WZCS. The latter wasn't really usable with SP1.

No, a whole load of other stuff was. And why would they? Chances are
they'd not been investigated fully by then or the hardware affected

You're missing the point. It's quite possible to use XP SP1 every day
without ever being seriously obstructed by a bug (rather harder with
SP0). By upgrading, you'll fix a load of potential problems that you
never triggered, but it's possible that you'll break an application that
you use on a regular basis.

The main "feature" upgrades for SP2 :

Bluetooth stack and wizards
TKIP WPA (wifi) & wifi wizards

IE: popup blocker & silent install blocker
manage add-ons (useful for turning flash on and off).

Wasn't that one in OE6? I don't know what heuristics it uses, but they
don't work. Maybe they improved it in SP2.

You can use pre SP 1 if you like, just make sure to turn off all the
garbage in the startup folder: Run > msconfig > Start up > uncheck
everything (as soon as you install XP, some ISP stuff and your security
belongs there, thats all. Anything else is spyware or might be.)

Don't go online until you have the following: A really good firewall
and set it up with high security and a tight set of registry
protectors, adware foils and AV. Stop IE accessing the internet, don't
accept third party cookies and watch out for javascript codes.

Open your e-mail online and don't touch attachments, stay away from
porn and don't load all the stuff in CDs and DVDs by default but take a
look at what you are installing and why.

Don't let any personal details get entered anywhere online, don't pass
on chain mail and don't give friends your telephone number or address
and you should be pretty safe.

Back up your files regularly and update all the security stuff. Assume
every one else online is a ijut and has the unhygenic codes of conduct
that you had before reading and inwardly digesting this advice and if
anyone gets hit, it won't be you.

For now.

Using XP with no antivirus is as socially unacceptable as having unprotected
sex knowing you are HIV positive :-)

I once went online with a new install, and collected a virus within four
minutes. That would cripple your machine far more than a reputable AV

But AV is no guarantee, there is obviously a time lag between new viruses

I only run AV once a while and never found anything. Far more important
to login as 'limited' user when connected plus a few other tweaks, such as
disabling file sharing and other LAN features.

Not limiting at all. The internet computer and the LAN computers are connected
via data link. Hence I can move files and look a at them from other computers
through the data link application. Much more tight than file sharing as there
is no resource sharing.

unknown ones.

Probably. There is much more to setting it up a secure network than just
making it work. Even MS continuously discover new security flaws. Also, I only
have limited resources and can't afford proper hardware firewall appliance
that should be part of any business system.

In any case, the system I have does the job.

But apparently there isn't a time lag... AV software commonly lists virus
code that has not been released yet. Or as the AV software words it 'not in
the field yet' This leads me to believe that the Anti-virus company know
full well whats about to be released and when? How? Work it out for

Yes, the thought has crossed my mind :-)

AV companies try to work out potential new methods of writing new viruses and
anticipate that someone might use that technique for writing a new virus.
At least that's the official explanation...

I tried Norton once and now regard their products as a virus.
It just gave me problems I didn't need.
It took ages of registry hacking to get rid of all the debris the '

Windows XP pre SP1 is compromised usually within a minute or so of

I did specify turning off all the report home stuff and putting decent
firewalls and etceteras in place before sending it out to play. Nobody
using the older version is going to be using it on critical services
that could cost money if they had the sense they were born with -unless
they are in government that is.

I'd expect that from our lot and the Yanks. (I am not sure their head

A clean pre-SP2 install with the firewall disabled (default) has a known

kill/reinfection cycle rather than fixing the problem. If you don't know
this, it's socially unacceptable for you to install copies of Windows :-)

You didn't. It doesn't happen with clean SP2 installs because the RPC
security patch was released before SP2, and the firewall is enabled by
default on SP2 anyway.

To pick up a virus within four minutes of a firewalled Windows install,
you'd have to go looking for it.

You don't need help to slow down your machine.

Increasing the OS size by an order of magnitude with rewritten
crippleware borrowed from the people they stole the original from has
seen to that.

XP original is fast. Bloody fast compared to SP 2, and of course it can
be used in older machines. I don't see how using third party saferware
instead of allowing all those things onto the start reporting home
every five minutes bar is a poor trade off.

Obviously you dont know much. Google for Rootkits.
Obviously I don't know much so I Googled for some Windows Tips or Hardware
Hints.
I found your web site , www.conorturton.com.
On looking for some handy Hardware Hints I found a blank page!
On looking for some Windows Tips I found a blank page!
If you know so much why don't you fix your own web site before you tell
other people what to do ?
Did you not read the part on the front page about it being updated?
Yes I did. It reads : 10th January. Websites page updated.

That reads to me ' Websites page updated '.

It doesn't say ' Windows Tips page being updated '.
It doesn't say ' Hardware Hints page being updated '.
So if these pages are not being updated then they are the finished product,
i.e. empty pages.
Once again I suggest you sort out your own crap before slagging people off
on here.

Strange...first line under the title reads:

Over the course of the next few weeks, this site will be updated with the essentials in free software, Windows tweaking, hardware resources and essentials for my favourite Linux distribution

Something to do with having a life and not much time for it at the
moment.
Having a life ? Not much time for it at the moment ?
It seems as though you spend your life on Usenet.
Here are some of the newsgroups you frequent:
uk.rec.gps
uk.transport
uk.rec.caravanning
uk.comp.homebuilt
uk.rec.driving
uk.rec.cars.maintenance
alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt
alt.games.ea.battlefield
alt.comp.periphs.videocards.nvidia
uk.legal
uk.railway

You are obviously too busy giving out your valuable knowledge and insulting
people to have time for a web site.

You don't like it when somebody answers back to you, do you?

Well I will help you with your web site, www.conorturton.com

What I think is that you need a goal, a sort of a target to work to, or a
deadline maybe.
I reckon that if you had more punters looking at your site that would give
you the incentive to get cracking and get the job done. Just think, once it
is finished there would be so many more people who would benefit from your
hints and tips.

In your hurry to amend the home page you forgot to add the date. Never mind,
I'll make a note of the date and shall we say, oh, in six weeks time you can
start telling people in all the newsgroups you pontificate in that a new web
site full of hints and tips is ready. If you're too shy to advertise
yourself I will spread the word, don't worry.
What do you think?
Can you get the site up and running in six weeks?

<snip very scary almost stalking type of stuff>

Do you realise how sad that is? If this was real life, you could be
charged with stalking.

To answer your question...I drive tankers quite a lot recently so have
quite alot of time parked up whilst I unload/load/CIP. Text groups are
quite low on data content so you can get alot of messages quite cheaply
using a mobile phone and a laptop.

Anyway, I don't have to explain myself to you.

Yes, I suppose if you are unable to use Task Manager or unable to monitor
out-going traffic you should buy antivirus software.
Obviously you dont know much. Google for Rootkits.

I didn't say it was but as Major Tom has pointed out 10th Jan is a bit long
for updating, nearly 6 long months and handing out the same old rhetoric on
here about people needing to update to SP2. Instead of handing out tips etc
on your website (blank pages) just put a big sign up saying: UPDATE TO SP2
BEFORE YOU ALL DIE OR GET CRIPPLED BY SOME BUG.

LOL. Yeah, updating a website done as a side hobby tends to be at or
near the bottom of the list of things to do.

I'll get around to it at some point. I've been restoring my Ford Capri
and nearly got it finished so I'll probably go off on a completely
different tangent with the site and devote it to that instead.

Don't go online until you have the following: A really good firewall
and set it up with high security and a tight set of registry
protectors, adware foils and AV. Stop IE accessing the internet, don't
accept third party cookies and watch out for javascript codes.
[snip]

SP2 isn't inherently more secure. It has a more configurable firewall
and adds a popup blocker and more execution warnings to IE, and that's
about it. Critical security patches are still released for SP1. SP1 with
a third-party firewall and Firefox is just as "secure" as SP2 with a
third-party firewall and Firefox.

Adware infection rates are 90% behavioural, IME. If you download random
"fun" games, MSN smileys and handy taskbar widgets, you'll end up with a
monstrous adware infestation. If you're paranoid about what you click on
and download the Windows updates, it's unlikely that you'll get anything.

I wouldn't say that there's much *wrong* with SP2 either, apart from the
extra 20 megs or so of bloat. I've only seen one or two machines BSOD
post-upgrade, although often the final stages of the install go round in
circles until you kill a process.

*too scared to up date my main PC (in case of it going tits up) *
Tim..
No.
What are you scared of , the changes SP2 makes or having the wrong product
key?
Major Tom.
My key is legit.

It the thing going tits up and un-reliable / un-stable (100% solid at the
moment) that worries me..

The thing is that some software now won't install unless SP2 is installed so
I think you are going to have to upgrade sometime soon ! :-)

In this case, what's the excuse for _not_ fixing it. :-)

Mind you, Microsoft's 'fixes' being more a matter of leaving the
'fixed' product less broke, rather than _fixed_, I can understand your
reluctance.

Well it is your computer, and if you don't want to update it, thats up to
you.

I run a PC here with Win XP SP0 and its connected to the net 24/7 running
Apache PHP, MySQL and a host of other web services. Thus far it has never
been a problem not having SP 1 or 2 installed. Infact at one stage I did
install SP2 and it caused me some issues which forced me back to SP0.

Luckily for me, I use Acronis and Ghost which allows me to try updates
without the risk of screwing the system up totally.

I found that installing SP2 on my particular system made it much less stable
generally and more likely to lock up randomly (not a good thing for a
computer that runs all the time), so off came SP2.

Im not saying that SP1 or SP2 are no good, but I found that it my case it
was a move in the wrong direction. I am now happy with how things are, and
with the computer behind a hardware firewall and sufficient AV and spyware
monitoring active, its running just fine.

I guess it all depends on individual circumstances. Its not risky trying an
upgrade to SP2 as long as you back everything up sufficiently before you
start.

For the record, I have another PC here (much more up to date hardware) which
does run SP2 without any issues.

A voice of reason from the wilderness. Hear Hear. I like yourself and many
others that I know have had stability issues after upgrading to SP2 hence
the reason I stay with SP1. It's the muppets on this ng like Andrew and
Conor who may never have had a problem with stability, BSOD, file corruption
after updating to SP2 that scream from the heavens that, YOU WILL UPDATE TO
SP2 BECAUSE I SAY SO. Morons the pair of them.

Do you use your machine for your business or something like that where the
info is really important?

If that's the case, why don't you get spare/second hand machine and play
around with XP + SP2 on non-critical data until you are happy with it?

I backup to a NAS unit, and to a 2nd PC's HDD, so data retention isnt really
an issue, its more the arse and hassle of un-necessary re-installation and
getting things back 'just-so'.

I thought you said you backed up......

If you truly do, it wouldn't be a problem to get it back exactly as it
was.

Only if he backs up the 'system' as opposed to the user data, the
latter being that which most folk only seem to consider worthwhile.

I back-up user data to a NAS, which itself is then backed up to a USB
drive - absolutely essential data is also burned to DVD; the OS is
backed up to a secondary drive using Acronis, and again, a DVD of this
date is taken once a week.

And I'm a mere home user with 2 desktop users and a laptop!
