Ah once he was bragging he didn't care if Alonso would join his team, when
there came some rumors about it and it became a -remote- chance it could be
reality he quickly changed his tune.
He most definitely don't want Alonso in his team.

Now AFTER Max signed for a couple of years he says he wants Max as a teammate,
well remember this when Max is free to join Ham's team.
My guess is he will again change his tune.

This is apart from the fact that the Merc isn't stupid and they will not likely
team up Max or Alonso near Hamilton.

Surely they (Hamilton and Mercedes) have got the best arrangement they
could possibly have?

1) A four-time world-champion
2) A highly capable number 2 driver that knows his place and is content
to stay out of Lewis' way, and, since he can win races and reach the
podium with ease, practically guarantees top contention in the constructor
championships.

I predict Ricciardo will be in the number 2 car for 2019...

(There's a good chance anyway as I see it. Hamilton keeps making ambiguous
noises about life after F1 and unfortunately I don't see Bottas as a team
leader. Ricciardo's hungry and capable and not happy to play second to
Verstappen for ever. Hamilton's older than Verstappen so being his second is
a much better proposition.)

Agreed but all of the number one 'good drives' are tied up for the
foreseeable future. Better to be number two in a competetive car than number
one in a dog - especially if you're younger than the number one and can
inherit....

It's all grid locked at the moment. Though it seems to me that Raikkonen is just keeping a seat warm for somebody.

It'll be interesting to see how Le Clerc gets on.

It seems to me the game with Ocon is to let him learn his craft at Force India, but only on year by year deals. Thus they can call him into the actual Merc team when they want to.

Agree. Raikkonen is on borrowed time. But he's had a long enough run, so
fair enough I suppose.

I'll miss Massa. He was a feisty driver.

Ah, but similarly to HAM, some people would like one to believe that it
was the driving style that caused the machinery to break - not any
weakness in the machinery, or some other influence.

Is anybody seriously saying that? Verstappen had a lot of DNFs too, so that says there was something up with the hardware. If one driver keeps on getting the mechanical problems whilst his teammates do not, then we can start calling whoever it is a car breaker.

This is a much harder thing to be these days, ITSM. For a start, how are you going to over rev an engine or fluff gear changes?

If that's what would happen at Merc - that he'd go there on the understanding that he was there to support, not challenge.

But where would he go where there is not another driver who is fast and well established AND he could run at the front? He must be hoping that Renault or McLaren take a big step forwards.

I just love the easy certainty so many people have that such and such
driver is overrated... ...or underrated.
Vettel is a four time world champion. You really don't see that too
often from a driver who could "easily [be] beat[en] in equal machinery"
Riccciardo beat him pretty comprehensively in the year that they were
team mates at Red Bull.
Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.

Indeed. Look at those types who saw some sort of conspiracy within the Red Bull team such that Vettel would be protected and his team mates deliberately ham strung. Try changing their firmly made up minds.

Despite the 2014 season.

Ah once he was bragging he didn't care if Alonso would join his
team, when there came some rumors about it and it became a -remote-
chance it could be reality he quickly changed his tune.
He most definitely don't want Alonso in his team.
Now AFTER Max signed for a couple of years he says he wants Max as
a teammate, well remember this when Max is free to join Ham's team.
My guess is he will again change his tune.
This is apart from the fact that the Merc isn't stupid and they
will not likely team up Max or Alonso near Hamilton.

Surely they (Hamilton and Mercedes) have got the best arrangement
they could possibly have?
1) A four-time world-champion
2) A highly capable number 2 driver that knows his place and is
content to stay out of Lewis' way, and, since he can win races
and reach the podium with ease, practically guarantees top
    contention in the constructor championships.
I predict Ricciardo will be in the number 2 car for 2019...
(There's a good chance anyway as I see it. Hamilton keeps making
ambiguous noises about life after F1 and unfortunately I don't see
Bottas as a team leader. Ricciardo's hungry and capable and not
happy to play second to Verstappen for ever. Hamilton's older than
Verstappen so being his second is a much better proposition.)
I'd reckon that Ferrari would be more likely, they wouldn't be adverse
to a driver with a good Italian name, I don't think that he'd be
adverse to taking Vettel on again, and Raikonnen is past his useby
date..
Vettel isn't in a hurry to have a team mate who can challenge him for number
one status (yet alone one who easilly beat him in equal machines) and as
long as he's doing reasonably well for Ferrari he'll have veto rights over
his team mate....

All that proves is that Ricciardo is a really good driver TOO, not that
Vettel is overrated.

The word "repelled" is nowhere in that article.

OK... this is a scenario you can argue all sorts of ways and find all sorts of precedents for.

Mansell was not keen on having Prost as a team mate - having been in that situation once before.

Prost was not keen on having Senna as a team mate - having been in that situation once before.

Senna was going around saying that Prost was a not a sportsman if he wanted to pick and chose his teammates, but Senna had kept Derek Warwick out of Lotus.

Hamilton's position here strikes me as being a bit more than "he might be fast enough to beat me." Remember that he's been in that situation before - and it was stormy and may well have been counter productive for the team too. Why should he sign up for another helping of the same?
