I've read all of the top 12 except the Rucker, and none of the bottom
12 except the Leckie and the Chambers. Go figure. (I did try to
read the Bear, but bounced off it...and at a time in my life when
I almost never stopped reading a book I'd started, too.)

Very similar list for me: I've read all the top 12 except the Rucker,
though I've read a couple more of the bottom 12 (I liked the Wright).

Greg Bear _Queen of Angels_ is on my Favorites bookcase; I obviously
liked it a lot. But there's a certain category of books to which I
realize my long-term opinion seems to depend strongly on my frame of
mind when I first read it. Books that seem to give off a New Age vibe
are part of that category, and Bear's book is an example. I either
strongly like, or find it difficult to finish those books. Elizabeth
Hand's _Winterlong_ is another book in that category for me (I don't
really know why, since it's very different) that other people love but
I dislike. Perhaps my reaction depends on whether I can "connect the dots"
the first time I read it? So I don't know whether to recommend such books
or not. But I liked Bear's book.

I forced myself to finish "Queen of Angels". As usual with that sort of decision it was a bad idea, and I recall almost nothing of the book.

Perhaps I should take advantage of the current situation to try again. Might be more in the mood for it now.

Maybe.

I eventually disposed of it (presumably at a Discover Books dropoff
box). This would probably have been after reading it a second time.

I don't recall being any more impressed the second time.

But YMMV.

I have read 9 of the 24. The Heinlein of course. The awesome Rudy
Rucker. The most excellent 'We Are Legion". The amazingly weird
"Ancillary Justice".
There are some good books on that list. I've read about half but five of them - "Excession", "House of Suns", "Diamond Age", "I, Robot" and "Hyperion" would make my short list of best books ever.

"House of Suns" deserves special mention. While Alastair Reynolds is best known for his excellent Revelation Space series, HoS is a gem and is probably his best work. Except maybe "Diamond Dogs". Maybe.

Highly recommended.

Another two to add to the TBR folder. I have read the top 14 except for
the Rudy Rucker and House of Suns. Should the Rucker be added as well?

I've only read one of _The Ware Tetralogy_ (_Software_) and I would say
that if you enjoyed Stross's _Accelerando_, you'll have a good chance at
enjoying the Rucker. I'm not a big fan of either. I did quite enjoy
Rucker's _White Noise_, though.

The list seems tilted towards post 2000 titles. What about
Jone's _Collosus_, or Hogan's _The Two Faces of Tomorrow_, or
Ryan's _Adolescence of P-1_?

Hmm - I may well need to check that out, thanks. I think Excession is one of my
favorite books ever, and I liked I,Robot & Hyperion a lot.

Tony, who can't read Stephenson for some reason, though

I've given up, having bounced off too many. But "Diamond Age" and "Cryptonomicon" are great.

I am surprised to see that "Colossus, The Forbin Project" is not on the
list. If I remembered the name right.
