Ha ha!!

Well done!!!

When do you leave the Evil Empire?

Which reminds me - Theresa was in the news yesterday saying Telecom was
losing the handset war because they "were our parents phone company, didn't
have sexy handsets and didn't do text very well".

Stupid slapper. I tried to tell them that for 8 years when I worked there,
but Telecom doesn't listen to the troops...

Of course, when Moutter and the rest started saying the same thing, it
became policy pretty damn quickly...

How odd. I can't imaging taking against a company because it sold
things to my parents, and I don't need a sexy handset, in fact the idea
that a handset could be sexy sounds quite twisted to me. As for "doing
text", I wonder what that means.

And yet, from a cold start, Vodaphone overtook Telecom in the mobile market
in less than ten years...

Funny, huh?

Having a trendy phone is no different from having a trendy watch, pair
of shoes, jacket, etc. Regardless of whether you care how 'sexy' your
phone is, there is a huge chunk of the market that does care and, when
Telecom was perceived as conservative and middle-aged, they were missing
out on a lot of potential customers.

Don't forget that whilst there isn't too much revenue in the youth
market because of their limited disposable income, the margins are
extremely good because of the fact that most teenagers are on prepaid
plans which have horrendously high calling charges, and they send large
volumes of text messages which cost stuff all to transmit over the
network.

I have a 'sexy' mobile and I have noticed no increase in my libido.

It is the youngsters who provide a large percentage of the revenue. They are
the ones who download the bells and whistles such as ringtones, cards ,
games etc.....At upwards of $3 each it is revenue sent from heaven .

I don't necessarily believe that a 'sexy' phone is a wise investment.
I'm just describing the buying habits of one particular segment of the
market.

I doubt that teenagers provide anywhere near as much revenue as business
customers do, but I'm sure that the teenage customers are just as
profitable because, as you rightly point out, they go for the gimmicks
which have huge profit margins on them.

IMO, they're getting ripped off, but I daresay it's all part of learning
how to manage their money (albeit the hard way).

I haven't got a cell phone yet though I sometimes consider it: is the
cost and occasional convenience of being able to call when I want to,
greater than the annoyance of being within constant reach of Timewasters
& Tossers Inc?

Anyway I've tried to get some idea of what combination of plan & phone
the best (cheapest) for someone who doesn't envisage using it a lot. I
think what I'd like best is one of the new plain phones that have big
print and don't do anything fancy, but they are very expensive so I'll
rule them out.

Ideas, please?

The only real advantage of the things is if you should break down in your
car somewhere for emergency purposes.
These days there's young idiots that will have their cell phones out texting
each other while sitting in the same fucking room only a couple of feet away
from each other. Telecom loves such simple minded suckers that blindly give
what money they have all away to Telecom.

Considering that you seemingly never move more than ten metres away from
your computer, it's probably hard for you to imagine that normal people
might like to be contactable when they're away from home.

Just because you have a computer, fax machine, and phone in your toilet
means nothing to me in slightest. I wouldn't expect you to have anything
less apart from a dozen spare rolls of shit paper as well.

I didn't criticise the having of a cell phone at all, just the stupid way
that many idiots choose to them.

It's a matter of degree. I've seen people so contactable that they
never seem to have five minutes of peace without someone texting or
calling for what seems to be the equivalent of exchanging white noise.

True, but modern handsets allow a lot of control over how contactable
you want to be. At the end of the day, you always have the option of
switching your phone off or leaving it at home, so people who are
constantly disrupted by their phones do so by choice.

Mobiles are a godsend to women who are out alone. If the car breaks down,
injures oneself ,or feels that their safety is threatened in any way ,a
mobile is very handy. I personally wouldn't get out of my car if a tyre
punctured when travelling alone at night.

Absolutely. They're also a great way for parents to have piece of mind

the negative aspects of the technology, and forget about the benefits.

Most of the men I know would far rather their kids and wives/girlfriends

The prepaid plans are generally aimed at people who use their phones
very rarely but, despite being in this category myself, I have opted not
to use a prepaid plan because I like having my calling itemised on a
bill at the end of the month in order to see exactly how much I'm
spending. The other problem with prepaid plans is that you risk running
out of credit in awkward situations if you're not careful to monitor how
much credit you have on your account.

I'm on Telecom's Mytime 100 which offers 100 off-peak minutes per month
at a monthly charge of $20. It's good value, but it would only suit if
you *never* make calls during business hours, because they charge
penalty rates that these times.

Agree, the little Motorola C155 is pretty good value at around $79 at
the moment, comes with $15 credit that lasts me for months. Then
top-up with the $20 cards. Two warnings:

1. If you don't top-up every 12 months, they cancel the SIM card, your
number, any credit, and the works! Thieving bastards!

2. Call Vodaphone and dump their damm voicemail instantly, It COSTS
you 20c to retrieve a call, and is quite unwanted to me. If sombody
rings me, and it's engaged, or off, then they try again later. Simple
really.

Ah! Many thanks! I haven't got the hang of what a SIM card is - is
that the info that makes it "your" phone?

A SIM card is a small memory card that is placed into your phone when you
buy it.

It contains the details of your number, account, and your phone book.

You can swap a SIM from one phone to another, and your details will be
transfered to the new phone...

Only available on GSM networks at this stage, though I understand there are
moves...

Global Systeme Mobile (or however it is spelled) - the European designed
mobile phone standard. It was *specifically* designed to work well across
international boundaries. It is basically the biggest phone standard (in
terms of numbers) in the world, and it is the reason people travelling
overseas generally take a vodafone with them.

The changes are that the US (which has its own standards) and China (which,
perversely perhaps, uses the US standards) are going to converge with the
GSM standard over the next few years, as regulators finally realise that
common standards are a better form of competition for consumers than
competing standards that lock you to one company via a handset purchase.

It is still a few years away...

Yes. It's a little card that fits in the back of your phone. I don't
have one in mine because I have an account, but if you're going pre-pay,
that's the way. Later, if you decide you want a nicer phone or your
cheap one gets damaged, all you do is remove the SIM card and put it in
your new phone and you still have the same phone number and all your
phone numbers and other data. It stands for S(omething) Identity Module.

You don't have one in your phone because it isn't a GSM phone...

GSM (ie, vodafone) phones (account and prepaid) have SIMs.

CDMA and TDMA (ie, telecom) phones (account and prepaid) don't.

Yep. CDMA handsets have an ESN (electronic serial number) instead. When
the handset is switched on, it transmits its ESN to the network and the
network then uses that information to identify the owner of the phone.
If you change your handset, then you just need to supply the ESN of your
new phone to Telecom.

Thanks Tarla. It's mainly for things like calling tradesmen - I
sometimes have to work in a house with no phone and it can be a plain
having to come home to call the plumber or sparky. Is one company
better than the other? I've read through the various "plans" and there
seem to be innumerable permutations. Some plans seem to have to be
renewed every 12 months whether you have used the minutes or not.

The cheapest deal around would be Vodafone pre-pay. You DO have to top
up every year though, but they all make you do that.

Both of the major networks are pretty good. I'm on Telecom because they
have exclusive coverage in a couple of areas where I need it (primarily
the Wairarapa coast, and Taylor's Mistake in Christchurch), but
international travellers are probably better off on Vodafone as their
roaming coverage is more comprehensive.

For your purposes, it shouldn't make a difference which company you go
with.

Prepaid Vodaphone sim card and a second hand phone. I prefer Nokia
phones, as the menus are easiest, they seem tougher than the erricsons
I had, and the power adapters don't have the stupid little plug thant
never stays in.
My cheap Nokia 3310 (?) lets ou set the size of the print on the
screen.

Sorry, but it's also something that, as you grow up and get wiser, you learn
to get over because you realise it's just one of those things that people
do. I got an email reply from a colleague at work the other day in which
she, as many people do when they're not entirely focused, called me Ainsley.
Am I upset? No. Because I don't actually expect to be the centre of her
world, and I know how easy it is in a moment's inattention.

I have learned not to worry about not being the centre of everyone's world.

The network must be really stuffed if they've got to drive the messages from
phone to phone.
No wonder Tim's votes from his thousands of supportors didn't arrive to TVNZ
in time, they were still on the road through Monday and Tuesday slowly
travelling towards TVNZ.

That's because all the negative people have left to pursue other interests
(present company excluded of course).

I worked for Yellow Pages for a brief period of time and the staff
turnover there was frighteningly high, although that tends to be the
case in most sales environments. I still always believed that they have
a positive attitude towards their staff, but the problem was purely
related to the way in which they provided support to staff.

I left after a breif period of time because the department and I had
different goals, and there was very limited scope for me to develop in
the role that I was in, but I still like them as a company and will
continue to be a customer.

There is a reason for that (oh, and Scebee? I was there for 8 years...)

Yep. A lot of the sales areas in Telecom are like that.

Of course, in the network areas, part of their business plan is the number
of people they can dump each year...

Opting for the american mobile standard instead of the gsm
used in the rest of the world did not help either.

That is a big part of it, yes, but I still feel there was a lot of
opportunity to market their way past that - pricing phones so that kids
could afford them, decent plans for non-business users, more rapid
introduction of cross-network texting (admittedly that was as much voda's
fault - they didn't want to give up their monopoly on the "youf" market)

The fact that telecom didn't catch on to the fact that text was even a
phenomenon until vodafone was just stunning too. But they eventually got the
idea.

I mean look at the situation today - Telecom has had something of a
resurgence in terms of numbers - handsets have helped, but the *plans*
available are possibly the biggest drawcards.

The funny thing is the people you meet in Telecom - they have the most
*amazing* belief in their mobile products - but unfortunately this belief
isn't based on anything resembling reality. It is all hype....

Congrats, Sarns. It's always been my experience that when these
opportunities pop up out of nowhere, it's always because they were meant
to be. Even if you find the transition hard, you'll definitely enjoy the
rewards in the end.

Indeed Alistair and I know that as much as anyone else :-) ...5 years ago i

That's the best bit - and pretty much what some of us have said for a number
of years. There is no reason why *anyone* can't change their circumstances -
all they need is the drive to do it.

I didn't always have drive...but i guess i'm lucky i'm a pretty strong
person mentally and if i take something on such as study...i'm determined to
get thru it.... many don't have that in their personality....

I have also secured myself employment over the last few weeks. I used
that 'brutal honesty' in my interviews, told them what I want and why
I left the previous company. I now have two contracts that I can work
at in the school term and managed to meet someone who knew my previous
employers personally and confirmed I was indeed working for people who
thought they were the Mafia.

I have worked at one of the positions since last Tuesday, start
training at another this coming Monday and was phoned with another
today (had to turn that one away).

Good luck Sarns and I hope everything works out for you. You certainly
deserve it :D

all good news, i'd say. incl the angst & brutal honesty. sounds like fun
actually when executed with a bit of knowhow, precision & technique. it's
given me a bit more of a boost on reinstating a few things now that i've
seen more of what goes belly-up and what doesn't.
