Am I the only who reads the news about the folks in London murdering
each other who is thinking "what has it got to do with us"?

I have read the excuses - David Lammy blaming middle-class white drug
users, Chuka Ummuna blaming random individuals "because they are poor"
and telling us we should stop calling out gangs, Diana Abbott blaming
stop and search, and Corbyn blaming the government.

It is a circus.

Even though I was born there, to me London is now another country and
has been for years. And I don't mean because of the colour mix of its
inhabitants, but its culture and its relationship (or lack there of) to
the rest of the UK.

It doesn't want anything to do with the rest of us so I am finding it
difficult to care, but even if I did - what can we do that it cannot do
for itself?

But has it in fact just lost its soul?

I dunno, just musing.....

As a contractor working nationwide I detested EVERYTHING about the place.

My little town that I grew up in has been swallowed up by the metropolis and
is unrecognisable now. I moved out in 1969 when I could see the infestation
starting to take hold.

Not really. There is unlikely to be a single cause for this problem - so
you are bound find that people, when asked, will give you a variety of
reasons why they think (or are even convinced) it's happening.

The business that London and its workers are engaged in is, to a fair
extent, different from most of other parts of the country - but does
this amount to not wanting anything to do with these 'other parts'?

Not really. 'North of Watford'* is in the same place as it was 50 years
ago.
*And so is 'Watford Gap'.

Why of course? Only people in the London area can get LBC on FM.

It depends what you mean by the 'London area'. Provided the path is
relatively unobstructed, in a car it's usable in certain directions out
to a range of around 60 miles from the transmitter.

Cars tend not to stay in the same place for long though!

They do, normally, but unless the car is in the garage or driveway of the
stationary house, then that doesn't really refer to the comment to which I replied.

But the original reference to LBC ("So you can pick up LBC on FM?") was
not specific to car reception.

LBC is listenable here on a small FM radio with telescopic aerial, and
onmy hi-fi-tuner with dipole indoor aerial.

I listen to steve allan every morning on the internet radio just for laughs

Bizarrely, you may think, whilst at home, watching the paint age on the
skirting boards is more a attractive pastime.

LBC is OK for in the car on occasions when R4 has already started a
play, if "Gardener's Question Time" is on or if it is playing out any of
its interminable drones about t'environment.

I do think you're being a bit harsh about "Gardener's Question Time".
Also, I often enjoy a good play - even if I tune in little late.

LBC is not something that you would normally sit down and specifically
listen to, but it's certainly handy (and often informative) to have on
when you're travelling, or when you're otherwise wasting your time
participating in pointless newsgroup discussions. However, I do listen
to other radio stations - even occasionally to the usually incredibly
boring BBC local radio.

Gardener's Question Time is the worst programme ever broadcast on Radio 4.

On reflection, it might not actually be that good.

Hmmm.... I can remember that (on the Light Programme, I think) back in
the late fifties and early sixties, with segments separated and linked
by snatches of the MJQ's "Vendome". This was at my grandmother's house
on her big valve wireless.

I'd say that "Womens' Hour" is fairly listenable, if a little variable
at times. Bit of a parson's egg. I certainly won't automatically switch
it off if I happen to be driving between 10:00 and 11:00.

I've found an official FM coverage map for LBC (see link).

<http://static.ofcom.org.uk/static/radiolicensing/mcamaps/al000008.pdf>

However, that's for a signal of 54 dBμV/m - which in the world of
broadcast FM radio, you can nearly use for toasting bread.

In certain directions, the signal goes way beyond what is shown. For
example, on the M40 you can easily listen to LBC as far as Stokenchurch
(650' asl), then you rapidly lose it as you drop down a couple of
hundred feet through the 'Vicar Of Dibley' cutting. However, it does
come up again, and continues rather scratchily until you get close to
Oxford, when co-channel interference takes over.

Not so. The signal is available across most of the adjacent counties
(Essex, Kent, Surrey, Bucks, Herts).

I've even heard LBC on FM in the car in West Sussex.

Which all goes to prove that none of those who live in the area, and are
at all interested in countless, never-ending, Brexit phone-in debates,
have any excuse for not listening to them! [Fear of dying of boredom is

You need a DAB, Freeview or internet radio to get LBC in Sussex, as per
the map you yourself posted, as does pretty much everyone else outside
the Greater London area.

So as long as they are not in a car without DAB, which of course
explains why you only get Greater London area traffic news, the entire
country is free to listen to O'Brien bully his callers at their leisure.
:-)

Did you read O'Brien's piece in the NewStatesman? On his version of
"truth" vs everyone else's assertions and press bias? This also explains
why Adonis sees the BBC as pro-Brexit.

And Nick Robinson's piece in response?

Very interesting.

Indeed. LBC is carried (notionally nationally*) on DAB MUX 11D.
*From personal experience, it's not everywhere.

No. Does it reveal anything startling, and which we probably don't know
already?

I suppose it depends on which programmes he listens to or watches.
Personally, I don't think that 'THE BBC' per se have a bias (nor do any
of the other radio and TV broadcasters that I listen to).

The articles will explain but in a nutshell, Adonis (and O'Brien re
media generally) believes the BBC is pro-Brexit because they give equal
weight to pro-Brexit opinion as if it were the truth as against the
actual truth of the anti-Brexit side of the argument.

Climate change is another example of where 'truth' and opinion are said
to be pitched equally.

His response is as interesting as O'Brien and Adonis's view point - how
he sees the media's role and what he says about what has happened in the
USA by going down the route that O'Brien and Adonis are calling for.

I have received LBC FM with an ordinary AM/FM car radio on the A23 in
Sussex around the junction of the A23/M23 (before the road descends the
long hill between Pease Pottage and Handcross).

Brighton was a journey I did a lot when I was working full time and I
woild usually listen to LBC (Nick Ferrari) when on my way.

I'm not saying anyone could get the signal in farther-flung East Sussex,
Brighton, Peacehaven, Arundel, Chichester, etc. But it's still available
aroud Pease Pottage. It can also be heard in Maidstone, Guildford,
Chelmsford, Welwyn, Luton, High Wycombe (though that's a bit dodgy with
all those hills), Bracknell, Farnborough and Farnham.

I do now have a car with DAB (and yes, it gets LBC more or less anywhere
in GB), but it doesn't tend to get used for longer journeys.

Indeed - Greater London.

Ofcom's map suggests not but sometimes unusual atmospherics can extend
radio coverage.

EXTREMELY Great London?

In this case, it's rarely 'atmospherics'. It's usually simply a case of
'the signal IS where the signal IS'. If you were receiving LBC FM in the
south of France, that WOULD be 'atmospherics' (probably sporadic-E
propagation). Relatively local intermittent reception (say 100 - 200
miles beyond its normal coverage) could just possibly be tropospheric
ducting - but the frequency of the Band 2 FM radio band is rather too
low for this to happen very often (more likely for Band 3 DAB).
