Discussion:
IOs 8 release and accessibility.

Hello all.

Days ago, I saw an email, talking about the new things related with the
accessibility in IOs 8.

But I have found around 395 emails with the same subject talking about this
topic, and I am reading many things, but no about the new things related
with accessibility on IOs 8.

Any body knows where can I read something about this?

Thanks in advance.

Pablo

I O S 8. I hear a notification tone when I get a message with my
screen locked, but the message is not spoken as it was in IOS 7. In
Accessibility there is an item that says 'speak messages always'; but
it doesn't speak when the screen is locked. Is this true for
everyone, or am I just special???

Sorry to disappoint you, you are not special, as I am having the problem to, and I think the notifications not being spoken in the lock screen but hearing the notification sound is one of the many many many bugs with VO in IOS8.

I wish it were that simple, but it was still in the on position. just does
not work as it did in 7.1. it randomly selects which texts it will speak and
is not always the same. I thought for a while it was those in my contact
list only, but as I said, it is random. I could deal with that, but it
speaks only about 1 out of 8 .

I don't think this has anything to do with the setting in settings > general > voiceover at all. Either it is a bug or it has to do with the settings in notifications. There is no longer, as far as I can see, a single setting in Notifications to have them spoken and even if you do "show Notification" for individual notifications they don't always get spoken. It seems like my 6+ is speaking some of them but my 5S isn't but I haven't tracked down the difference if there is one.

Subject: Speak messages on locked screen?
I O S 8. I hear a notification tone when I get a message with my
screen locked, but the message is not spoken as it was in IOS 7. In
Accessibility there is an item that says 'speak messages always'; but
it doesn't speak when the screen is locked. Is this true for
everyone, or am I just special???

Hi Pablo,

There are also at least 2 or 3 Podcasts on Applevis which are about iOS 8
accessibility and iOS 8 bugs. If you have a Podcast client I highly
recommend you subscribe to the Applevis podcast, you can set it to not
download any Podcasts, but this way you get to see what they release and you
can either stream or download any podcasts you want to listen to.

Furthermore, Jonathan Mosen has just finished a presentation on the
Accessible World Tech Talk. I have pasted his email letting the list know
about it below so you can go and listen to a recording of his presentation.
Anyhow, in short, iOS 8 has some neat new features and some even neater new
bugs. Knowing your reaction after iOS 6 and iOS 7 came out, I think your
decision to stay with iOS 7.1.2 is a good one. Wait until iOS 8.0.1 comes
out and see what fixes are reported on the Viphone list and on Applevis and
then you can see if you want to upgrade or wait a bit longer for more fixes
to happen. Anyhow, here is Jonathan's message:

Hi everyone,

on Monday 22 September at 8 PM Eastern US time, I'll be giving a Tek Talk
presentation on the free Accessible World chat site about iOS 8. I'll
discuss some of the new features in iOS 8 and demonstrate their use, as well
as look at the high number of significant bugs in iOS 8 and their
implications.

There'll also be plenty of time for you to share your own experiences with
iOS 8 and ask questions.

If you're not available to attend the event live, a download will be made
available after the event.

I can get Handoff to work as far as phone calls and hopefully sms messages when it becomes available but that's as far as it goes with me since I have a 4s and so no Airdrop either which Handoff seems to be based on. My favourite features are the new direct touch typing mode and Braille Screen Input. Makes typing less of a chore now. I also love the new Alex voice but can only get that on my iPad Mini of course.

This thing of handoff sound very usable. Even though this direct touch,
doesn't sound so good. I mean, if it is like a regular keyboard, but just
guessing where could be the keys, is like typing in regular touch typing,
because if we touch a key, using touch typing, and leave out our finger,
that key is goint to type a letter any way.

Of course, guessing.

Subject: IOs 8 release and accessibility.

Pablo

Has anyone heard any rumors or otherwise that Handoff will not work on older Macs?
/Krister
This thing of handoff sound very usable. Even though this direct touch, doesn't sound so good. I mean, if it is like a regular keyboard, but just guessing where could be the keys, is like typing in regular touch typing, because if we touch a key, using touch typing, and leave out our finger, that key is goint to type a letter any way.
Of course, guessing.

I know there are bugs, but I am truly enjoying this iOS. I really love handoff!

Hi Pablo,
There are also at least 2 or 3 Podcasts on Applevis which are about iOS 8 accessibility and iOS 8 bugs. If you have a Podcast client I highly recommend you subscribe to the Applevis podcast, you can set it to not download any Podcasts, but this way you get to see what they release and you can either stream or download any podcasts you want to listen to.
Hi everyone,
on Monday 22 September at 8 PM Eastern US time, I'll be giving a Tek Talk presentation on the free Accessible World chat site about iOS 8. I'll discuss some of the new features in iOS 8 and demonstrate their use, as well as look at the high number of significant bugs in iOS 8 and their implications.
There'll also be plenty of time for you to share your own experiences with iOS 8 and ask questions.
If you're not available to attend the event live, a download will be made available after the event.
You can visit http://accessibleWorld.org <http://accessibleworld.org/> and navigate to the Pat Price Tek Talk Training Room. Alternatively, head over directly to the conference room by choosing this link <http://conference321.com/masteradmin/room.asp?id=rsc9613dc89eb2>.
I'm looking forward to sharing some info with you and to an informative discussion afterwards.

about it below so you can go and listen to a recording of his presentation.

This thing of handoff sound very usable. Even though this direct touch, doesn't sound so good. I mean, if it is like a regular keyboard, but just guessing where could be the keys, is like typing in regular touch typing, because if we touch a key, using touch typing, and leave out our finger, that key is goint to type a letter any way.
Of course, guessing.

You and me both, hand off is great. My room mate takes the hone to work with her on Wednesdays and so I have no phone. Now, with IOS8, I answer all the calls on the iPad while she is at work. Love it!
