Brilliant episode.

Great performances from him and Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt.
Also from Jenna Louise Coleman and Billie Piper.

Liked John Hurt's War Doctor making fun of Matt Smith and David Tennant's
Doctors behaving like children. Maybe this is a sign of what to expect from
Peter Capaldi.

From the start I was expecting the Time Lords to walk out of the painting
and Gallifray to materialise from there as well. Looks like now at the end
Gallifray is either Trenzalore or hiding somewhere on it.

Was sort of expecting the previous Doctors to be edited in in some way and
was hoping but not really expecting Peter Capaldi be in there too until I
saw him. First time a later Doctor has been seen before he's been
regenerated into.

Expected that the War Doctor would regenerate at the end since there
wouldn't be much point to him without the Time War.

After the way the story went I'm thinking that maybe Stephen Moffat
originally wrote the part for the 9th Doctor but Christopher Eccleston
declined to take part so John Hurt was recruited instead.

Heard rumours that Tom Baker would be in it but it was seeming less and less
likely towards the end, and when all the previous Doctors appeared I thought
that was it. Then there was the mention of the Caretaker and I figured out
it would be him.

Brilliant to see Tom Baker again. The best moment of the entire story and it
was a brilliant performance between him and Matt Smith.

I'm guessing that the 4th Doctor's took some time off, let himself age a
little and then reversed the ageing effects after he met the 11th. Might
have been when he went off in the TARDIS immediately after his regeneration
from the 3rd and so may still have been regenerating.

Watched the Afterparty. Looked like One Direction got caught in a time loop.
It was so funny. And Tom Baker trying to avoid answering the questions about
his cameo since the interview with him had been pre-recorded before the
screening.

So next its the hunt for Gallifrey and a way for the Doctor to continue
regenerating since Peter Capaldi with be the 12th regeneration.

Also enjoying watching The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot over and over again on
the red button loop. Going to have to check out the Zygons covered in sheets
to see which one's were Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.
Obviously Paul McGann was signed up to film The Night of the Doctor and Tom
Baker was already in the anniversary special so they couldn't join them.

And where ever happened to the UNIT analysis of the stone dust? Was
expecting pulverised Weeping Angels.

All in all a great spectacular episode to celebrate Doctor Who's 50th
anniversary.

10/10

It wasn't made clear (probably puposely) whether or not Baker's
caretaker character was actually the Doctor (past or future version),
or whether it was just a cameo appearance by the actor.

Since we don't know who John Hurt regenerated into, there is a
potential space for yet another inserted Doctor, but currently Peter
Capaldi is now the 13th Doctor, and supposedly the last (depending on
which regeneration rule you believe and what the writers do when he
decides to leave).

It was analyased. The two scientists discovered it was marble, etc. and
then the scarf scientist realised that it was the remains of the
destroyed statues so the Vogons, ... sorry, Zygons ;-) could hide in
their place.

It's was said there were 13 Doctors when Peter Capaldi joined the others so
unless there are other non-Doctors he's the 12th regeneration, which means
there's also the problem of the Valeyard that needs to be solved.

One Council person said "All 12 of them" which another person ammended
that to "All 13" ... but Matt Smith was supposedly the 11th Doctor and
we now know that he is really the 12th, so there's always the potential
to add in more and renumber them again. It's just up to the writers as
to how that could work. :-)

He regenerated into Eccleston. The Time Lords stated that they were
showing all of his regenerations. Hurt's War Doctor wasn't considered a
proper "Doctor" because he was fighting brutally, doing a lot of killing
(taking out multiple Daleks with the Tardis for example) and finally
committed genocide. By saving Gallifrey (and the 2.47 billion brats),
he was redeemed and became the 9th Doctor, relegating Eccleston to the
10th and making Capaldi the final normal regeneration as the 13th Doctor.

The Daleks killed themselves technically, thus removing the genocide
guilt and the angst of being the last Time Lord.

After re-watching Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, I have a bad
feeling of what might come after Capaldi... Catherine Tate may have
decided to give up comedy by then...

Thus, when the Doctor pulls Gallifrey out of the way of the Dalek firepower with his dimensional pocket trick, the Daleks on the Capital side of Gallifrey should face relatively little fire from the other side, so should survive!

didn't anyone check under the statue covers (when checking to see if
anything was missing)?
In the middle of a war?
There wasn't a war in the Tower of London when the mess was discovered.
What about Gallifrey in its finest moment?
How is that relevant to my question of why no one at the Black Archives
looked under the statue covers while investigating the mess at the BA &
the missing people images in the paintings?
Time War was interfering.

The Daleks are converging on the Capital, placing them on ONE side of
Gallifrey! Thus, when the Doctor pulls Gallifrey out of the way of the
Dalek firepower with his dimensional pocket trick, the Daleks on the
Capital side of Gallifrey should face relatively little fire from the
other side, so should survive!

Spoilers for Fugitive Of The Judoon Below!
Post by Your Name
<snip>
Post by Agamemnon
It wasn't made clear (probably puposely) whether or not Baker's
caretaker character was actually the Doctor (past or future version),
or whether it was just a cameo appearance by the actor.
Post by Agamemnon
So next its the hunt for Gallifrey and a way for the Doctor to continue
regenerating since Peter Capaldi with be the 12th regeneration.
Since we don't know who John Hurt regenerated into, there is a
potential space for yet another inserted Doctor, but currently Peter
Capaldi is now the 13th Doctor, and supposedly the last (depending on
which regeneration rule you believe and what the writers do when he
decides to leave).
Space for another inserted Doctor, such as Doctor Ruth in "Fugitive Of The Judoon" on Jan 26, 2020?

And where ever happened to the UNIT analysis of the stone dust? Was
expecting pulverised Weeping Angels.
It was analyased. The two scientists discovered it was marble, etc. and
then the scarf scientist realised that it was the remains of the
destroyed statues so the Vogons, ... sorry, Zygons ;-) could hide in
their place.
Why didn't anyone take the covers off the statues when the stone dust had been analyzed?

i kinga thought that the dialog "i used to be you - or you used to be me" that a future generation of the Doctor (12 generations be damned) oerhaps re-generated into the form and personality of his 4th incarnation (perhaps with the help of the sisterhood to force a targeted regenerations)

also - i WISHWISHWISH CE had come back to film the other end of the post time-war regeneration scene - (or run his own regteneration scene in reverse) - would have REALLY cleaned everything up nicely (other than the outfit)

also i had thought (as watching) thet The Moment had provided a way out of 12 regenations) - the threat to the War Doctor was - your consequence will be to LIVE - I immediately took that to mean LIVE many many more incarnations - but since he ended up not using The Moment to destroy - that consequence didn't happen

also - was history REALLY re-written? as far as any of the Doctor Incarnations knew (do to a memory wipe due to time-stream out of sync) - Gallefrey and most of the Daleks WERE destroyed) - but as we now Know - it really wasn't

I wonder if the Sisterhood potion was set to force the post-time war regeneration ? or was is it just the overwhelming weariness (and his now willingness to "let his guard down" and BE overwhelmed by the weariness cause the regerneration?? he DID say ... makes sense ... when the regeneration began .....

We already knew from a previous episode (no idea which one, I don't
bother keeping track of them that fanatically) that Gallifrey was
hidden in a pocket universe and not really destroyed. So, even though
the Doctor(s) never pushed the red button, the episode in effect did

off with Gallifrey destroyed (which we know didn't happen) and ended
with it not being destroyed.

I wonder if the Sisterhood potion was set to force the post-time war
regeneration ? or was is it just the overwhelming weariness (and his now
willingness to "let his guard down" and BE overwhelmed by the weariness cause
the regerneration?? he DID say ... makes sense ... when the regeneration
began .....
Possibly just old age and time for the next regeneration to occur
naturally.

i kinga thought that the dialog "i used to be you - or you used to be me"
that a future generation of the Doctor (12 generations be damned) oerhaps
re-generated into the form and personality of his 4th incarnation (perhaps
with the help of the sisterhood to force a targeted regenerations)
Thought a future Tom Baker like Doctor might be possible as well but Peter
Capaldi looks and sounds nothing like Tom Baker and he's the final
regeneration as the current rules have it.

We've seen the 4th Doctor age and become younger again in The Leisure Hive
and also the 10th do the same in The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time
Lords. Also the Doctor could be a master of disguise like the Master. Might
have even used one of those pocket watch things to turn himself human, let
himself age and then return to his Time Lord form again where the aging
effects were negated. There's also the possibility that he did all this when
he was Lord President of the High Council of Gallifray and had access to the
Matrix and the Coralet of Rassilon in The Invasion of Time using some sort
of projection.

Don't think that's what his conversation over dinner with Stephen Moffat was
about. He wouldn't have come back for just 2 or 3 seconds. I think he was
offered John Hurt's role first and he decided he doesn't want anything to do
with the series anymore. They still could have done a CGI regeneration into

The Master was able to choose to regenerate when he decided he should have a
new younger body at the end of Utopia and the first Doctor regenerated when
his body got too old.

Tom Baker's character did say something about "revisiting" old versions
and there was the hint that he was possibly a future "retired" version
of the Doctor, so perhaps (ignoring the limit) it's possible to
regenerate into previous versions.

If John Hurt does regenerate into Christopher Eccelston, then that
means Christopher Eccelston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith between them
have to cover 400 years?! Which means about half his lifetime
(depending on which age you want to believe) and that we've missed a
HUGE amount of the adventures those three have had (most of which must
have been when he was "between companions").

Overall I was a little disappointed. It had a fantastic start, and Hurt making 'old fan' jibes about the newer Doctors was great fun, but Hurt was underused, the Zygons were an odd choice of villain for the story as well as being unfortunately comical in their effects for a fairly serious episode, and while the Zygon invasion from the past idea was quite clever, frankly the main plot was paper-thin, boiling down as it did to being only the 'Ghost of Christmas Future' part of "A Christmas Carol". Instead of the dramatic Time War ending, we have ... Gallifrey vanishes and the Daleks accidentally blow each other all up in crossfire (because, you know, space really isn't that big and all those shots are bound to hit every other ship) in a show of comic incompetence. And hang on, didn't we already do the 'Gallifrey was frozen in time' bit, and the consequences came back to haunt the Doctor in The End of Time?

Elizabeth was execrable, and Billie Piper's performance could have been phoned in. The only thing that made the episode work was the interaction between the three leads. On the plus side, that was extremely good.

The anniversary special was OK, but nothing special. Moffat
really needs to learn that less is more.

Did we really need the shtick of Matt Smith dangling out of
the airlifted TARDIS? When a story has such obvious and
contrived padding right at the start, you know there's
something wrong! (And why did UNIT decide to airlift it
without even knocking on the door to see if he was in!?!)

The stock footage of previous Doctors was also unnecessary.
(I'd prefer to see my childhood memories being kept out of
the rebooted rubbish era, so they're not contaminated by it.)
OTOH the shot of Capaldi joining in was just perfect, and
actually had me punching the air with excitement.

In a similar vein, the scene with Tom Baker was awkward and
embarrassing to watch. Seeing how old he is now, just
destroyed any happy nostalgic thoughts. It's a bit like
the depressing atmosphere of seeing Hartnell struggling to
read the cue cards in "The Three Doctors", only much much
worse because this used to be Tom Baker, the greatest Doctor
ever.

But it wasn't all bad. I loved the interaction between the
3 main Doctors. Hurt dominated every scene he was in,
proving that the Doctor doesn't need to prance around like
a pratt to have screen presence. (And Moffat is getting
surprisingly good at writing this kind of deadpan snarker
Doctor, with McGann in "Night" and now Hurt. Let's hope
Capaldi continues in a similar vein.)

And Billie Piper was good as a very different character
from Rose Tyler. (Although how stupid was Hurt's Doctor
not to immediately work out that the mysterious woman who
mysteriously appeared on the mysterious sentient device,
might have something to do with that device!?!)

Clara was bland as always, but at least she doesn't actively
annoy. And it was great to see Kate Stewart again; any
chance of her becoming a semi-regular character?

All in all, not bed, but just needed a little bit of trimming.

there's also the problem of the Valeyard that needs to be solved.
The Valeyard no longer exists due to The Doctor winning his trial, the
Valeyard was a projection of potentia which would only have become
actual if the Doctor had lost his trial.

there's also the problem of the Valeyard that needs to be solved.
The Valeyard no longer exists due to The Doctor winning his trial, the
Valeyard was a projection of potentia which would only have become
actual if the Doctor had lost his trial.
The Valeyard was seen escaping from the Matrix at the end of Trial of a Time
Lord.
You might as well as ask where Mel first met the Doctor.

So far we have 9.5/10, 10/10 and 10/10 . Your rating?

Because it was fun? Storywise, I wouldn't disagree that it needed padding since the plot was as thin as they come, and the Zygon story was so plainly an afterthought that they didn't even bother to finish it. But at least it was padded with style - and plainly the main motivation was to show off the budget used for the anniversary with a helicopter tour of London, rather than to fit the story.
Post by solar penguin
The stock footage of previous Doctors was also unnecessary.
I think it was fairly clumsily-done, especially Eccleston's insert (and it is disappointing that he's the only living Doctor not to have been involved in the anniversary in some way - with Davison, CB and McCoy in The Five(ish) Doctors and McGann in the mini-episode).

We all know what Tom Baker looks like now. While I think he might have been introduced better as a voice-over (since his voice is unchanged), that wouldn't have felt the same as having him back in a DW episode.

All he really needed to do to write Hurt was read the comments fans of the old series here make about the reboot and insert them into his script, but he did it brilliantly.

On the downside, Hurt just had fewer lines than the other two and Moffatt seemed unable to distinguish between Tennant and Smith - aside from a different catchphrase, the lines he gave to one could easily have been given to the other.
Post by solar penguin
And Billie Piper was good as a very different character
from Rose Tyler.
I found the character lacking in any character, and using Rose was pretty pointless.

And the less said about Elizabeth the better.

Despite all of that, and Moffatt's lack of imagination in his depiction of the Time War (it's a war, so all these mighty, advanced Time Lords are running around with ray guns and shoulder-mounted rocket launchers) the interaction between the Doctors was good enough by itself to make this a fairly good episode.

More importantly it was very suitably-chosen as an anniversary episode: bridging the gap between new and old Who by deliberately making Hurt's character a "classic series"-style Doctor looking sometimes despairingly at the antics of his successors, only to come to accept them into the fold because, fundamentally, they're about the same things. In all the anniversary-related documentaries Moffatt's harped on about how the essence of the series hasn't changed since its inception, and this episode does a good job of demonstrating that.

Don't think so. Needed an extra 15 minutes maybe so the Zygon story could
have been be completed properly. They could have also given cameos to Peter
Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy to complement Tom Baker's Curator,
maybe showing them in succession as the Curator in earlier years to reveal
that it was actually the Moment interface at work or as other instances of
the interface at other points in the episode, but then again they tried
something like that in the Big Finish story Zagreus and it wasn't very
successful because of it.

What I would have really liked and was somewhat expecting after the first
trailer and even earlier since Dimensions in Time was all of the previous
Doctor's to have been given their own computer animated avatars which looked
just like them in their prime and lip synced to their voices provided by the
original actors and acting as instances of the TARDIS user interface in the
same way Rose appeared as the interface in earlier stories or as some sort
of projection from the Matrix or better still a Time Lord Second Life style
IM client with it being explained as the only way that it was possible for
the Doctor to communicate and interact with himself though a tiny window in
the time lock.

Eccleston was (and they could always have used a stand-in actor for him), but I doubt the others were - the age difference presents a difficulty in reintroducing these Doctors to the story, since we know how old they were when they regenerated.

The others got to do The Fiveish Doctors instead...

Just as a matter of interest, do you ever read the comments that you reply
to? Or do you just hack them about and add an unrelated observation of
your own?

I merely enquire out of academic interest, as you've conspicuously failed
to address the question that asked, and the corresponding reply, in the
remainder that you've left intact.

At one point, the War Doctor, Doctor 10, and Doctor 11 are trapped in a cell in the Tower of London. The cell has a wooden door, which will take the sonic screwdriver centuries to figure out how to disintegrate. The War Doctor therefore starts his screwdriver doing the necessary calculations. The calculations continue for 400 years until the sonic screwdriver gets up to Doctor 11's time, at which point they are complete.

Would it have been possible for the sonic screwdrivers to simply BURN the door down?

At one point, the War Doctor, Doctor 10, and Doctor 11 are trapped in a
cell in the Tower of
London. The cell has a wooden door, which will take the sonic screwdriver
centuries to figure
out how to disintegrate. The War Doctor therefore starts his screwdriver
doing the necessary
calculations. The calculations continue for 400 years until the sonic
screwdriver gets up to Doctor
11's time, at which point they are complete.
Would it have been possible for the sonic screwdrivers to simply BURN the door down?
Wow. Three Doctors in the room, trapped together, and not one of them worked
out they could have burned the door down!!

I think we can safely say that no - it would not have been possible for the
sonic screwdrivers to burn the door down. They may have had a chance if they
carried laser screwdrivers instead...

Well, not one of the 3 Doctors had thought to test the door to see if it was actually locked, so it does seem plausible to me that they might not think of burning down the door.

Could the sonic screwdrivers have disintegrated the walls, or ceiling, or floor?

The Doctors thought that the sonic screwdriver could disintegrate the door, once it had calculated how to do so. They said that it could handle a higher quality door more easily. I see no reason why it couldn't handle walls, ceilings, or floors more easily than that wooden door, assuming that the walls, ceilings, and floors are made of stone.

Because that is not what the Doctor said at all. He uses the sonic

I could have swore that I heard the Doctors talk of calculating how to disintegrate the wooden jail cell door.

The cell does have stone walls. I saw one of the Doctors scratching the vortex manipulator activation code into the wall.

I am rewatching the episode, and the War Doctor definitely proposed using his sonic screwdriver to disintegrate the wooden cell door. The War Doctor starts the calculation, and 400 years later, Matt Smith announces "calculation complete".

The cell also has stone walls. Why not use the sonic to disintegrate the stone?

The 3 Doctors get out of the cell (which was unlocked). Queen Elizabeth announces that she killed her double. David Tennant marries her, than Clara and the 3 Doctors need to get to the Black Achieves in the Tower of London. But they are TARDIS proof. Why not materialize outside the Tower, then fly in manually, or walk in manually?

Disintegrating the door isn't likely to bring the whole castle

In The Forest of the Night: The Doctor talks of creating an increased gravity field to pulls down some trees. Could the Three Doctors have created an increased gravity field and used it to tear down that door, or "Torn Down That Wall"?

Since you can start a campfire by "rubbing two sticks together", I'm
pretty sure the sonic screwdriver could be applied to create enough
friction to set a wooden door on fire.

Don't have any guess about how big the fire might be or how long it
would take to burn through the door.

Anyway, the point is moot, since the door wasn't even locked.

Were any screws used to attach the door to its hinges? If so, could the sonic SCREWDRIVER have been used to unscrew them?

Or could the hinges have been disintegrated?

No. Try thinking about it for just a few seconds. There is a great piece of
wood in the way - known as a door. So you'd also need a hole in the door
directly opposite the screws that is deep enough to hold them. And apart
from anything else, it's unlikely screws were used - they weren't that
common until the 18th century.

The sonic screwdriver is not a get out of jail card. It's not a magic wand.
No, the sonic screwdriver does not disintegrate wood or metal.

Actually, it's a pretty good question. I've seen screws, nuts and
bolts come loose due to vibrations that fell within the audible range.
Every time a car goes by with that heavy thumping bass, you can hear
the fenders rattle because the vibration has loosened the fasteners.

It's why you use Locktite when rebuilding automobile engines.

However, a 16th century dungeon door in the Tower of London would have
more likely have heavy wrought iron strapping on both sides and would
be held together with iron rivets which would also be used to mount
heavy strap hinges.

¡
¡Actually, it's a pretty good question. I've seen screws, nuts and
¡bolts come loose due to vibrations that fell within the audible range.
¡Every time a car goes by with that heavy thumping bass, you can hear
¡the fenders rattle because the vibration has loosened the fasteners.
¡
¡It's why you use Locktite when rebuilding automobile engines.
¡
¡However, a 16th century dungeon door in the Tower of London would have
¡more likely have heavy wrought iron strapping on both sides and would
¡be held together with iron rivets which would also be used to mount
¡heavy strap hinges.
¡

Carnival of Monsters (Only works on Electronic), City of Death is an rare situation in the "old lock" also a small weak old door.
Traken is a comparible situation where he utters a joke about technology running it's course, when only ye old key would do.
Most cases in the pre-milenial it is use on electronic. Now it's "Magic!" To Yoshi's Island!

On the off show subject Colombo knocked open a door using a Gun in a sand pit, it too was electronic.

Hammond roars a Challenger sets off Car Alarms on Top Gear.

Bender opens a safe in Futurama, but explains why first. A joke about the fault in the design.

If the attachment is still with them (Robot).
Since you can start a campfire by "rubbing two sticks together", I'm
pretty sure the sonic screwdriver could be applied to create enough
friction to set a wooden door on fire.
Don't have any guess about how big the fire might be or how long it
would take to burn through the door.

After the War sonic scanned the door, what did it spend 400 years calculating on?

Baker had an attachment in Robot. Now, I suspect due the need to
compress sonic energy to luke warm let alone to a flame.
