Discussion:
So how do you become a "biker" ?

All this bollocks about "bikers" got me thinking.

It's only a mode of transport for fucks sake.... or am I missing something?
Is having a motorcycle a lifestyle and attitude change that is not only
visible from the outside but significantly changes the person within?

A friend of mine used to fulminate over this regularly, whereas I 've
never lost any sleep over it, it's just a word. I love my bikes and the
freedom of biking but I don't see myself as a "Biker", any more than I
do a "Car-er" but there are those that do - the wannabe outlaws usually.
And it's a handy label for the media to pin on a minority, in the lazy
way that they do.
AOL to that brother Wegg. I ride a bike, I enjoy riding them and
that's the end of it, really.

I think it's a relative label.

I've got friends who consider me a 'biker'.
I've got friends who consider me 'more of a biker' than other biking
friends.
I've got friends who I consider 'more of a biker' than I consider myself.

I think some people use the term 'biker' to describe someone who owns and/or
rides a bike.
Other people only use the term 'biker' for someone for whom bikes & biking
are inextricably woven into their everyday life.

To me it doesn't matter who uses the label and to whom the label is
attributed. At the end of the day..
..it gets dark and the shops shut.

Only on Sundays in most areas, otherwise there are now quite a few 24hr
supermarkets - and don't forget service station shops - a lot of them don't
shut at night either!

I think there is something more to it than that.

Most people who own a car have no interest in motoring, it's a just a
convenient method of getting around. Only a very small minority of car
owners actually have a real interest in it.

I think with bikes it is exactly the reverse. The majority of bike
riders have a healthy/unhealthy interest in their bike and bike
related topics. I'd have thought only a small minority have no
interest other than 'it gets me from a to b and I can't afford/drive a
car'.

Then again, I may be deluding myself...

Hmmm... we have the '"biker's nod" to each other - why? Because we are a
brotherhood? Do we *choose* to differentiate ourselves from other road
users?
You might... I don't.

Irrespective of who does and who doesn't, it happens. In the same way as
MG drivers acknowledge (or used to when I had one 20 years ago) each
other with a flash of the headlights. It's a sort of 'club' thing isn't
it. You park up someweher and if there is another biker there, chances
are you'll start talking about the bikes and stuff. It's an ice-breaker.
I'm waffling. As Phil said, it seems that people who ride bikes have
more of a passion for their transport than car drivers. Except for those
people who, by their choice of car, you *know* are passionate such as
the old MG drivers (er the drivers of old MG cars that is)...

<SNIP, some stuff>

On a related note, since I went to the Rock 'n' Blues I've been
wondering how you go about becoming an Outlaw, an Angel or some-such.

Not that I'm thinking of doing it, any more than I'm thinking of
becoming Pope - it's just one of those things that has cpatured my
interest.

There were a number of probationary Outlaws wandering round the RnB, so
I know there is a certain amount of being shouted at and stuff to go
through, but I was more interested in the following;

1. How do you even get to the stage of being a probationary member? It
seems to me that wandering up to a gang of 1%ers and saying, "Please
mister, I want to be in your gang." would get you a sound kicking. I
also get the impression there's not much to do in the way of filling in
application forms and wearing your best suit for interviews.

2. All of the probationary Outlaws looked very similar to existing
memebers - do you have to have the right look before you start or do
they give you a little sheet full of grooming and styling tips to help
you achieve that look?

3. Is it actually possible to join if you are a sprots bike rider with
1 piece leathers, short hear and clean shaven visage?

4. Do the people who join actually have real jobs? None of them looked
like they might just stick their leathers and stained jeans in the
wardrobe on Sunday night and head into the office on Monday morning -
not even as tech support staff.

Amazingly the Outlaws web-site answers none of these questions, but I'm
sure that ukrm will know.

Now that you mention it I do quite fancy becoming Pope, just to be
infallible on religious and moral matters ... wouldn't _that_ be a
superb trump card to play in ukrm debates?
Maybe if I get to be the Pontiff I can write to the Angels and ask them
for an honourary membership, I'm sure they'd do it just for the free
publicity.
It's a plan....

I thought this might be the case. Presumably it's not just a case
of looking the part either; getting noticed by being loud at
RnB and similar is part of it yes?

Or do recruiters just wait outside court? ;-)

I was trying to explain UKRM to a friend recently. She thinks of
it as 'a biker gang on the Internet' and has trouble getting her
head round it.

Her: So, are they anything like the Hells Angels?

Me: Well, only in a limited way. It's a case of "We're UKRM- don't
mess with us, or we'll type some *very* cutting comments about
you".

Her: So do they eat live chickens?

Me: Er, no. But they do have BBQs, which sometimes include
chicken. Dead.

Her: So if an outsider wanders in, is there a stony silence
followed by them getting beaten up?

Me: Er... it's more likely that they'd find their spelling and
grammar criticised. And the layout of their postings.

Her: Right... er... do you get badges for, say, shagging a black
menstruating woman in front of the group?

Me: Not as far as I know. But I have got a number for, er, riding
round some roads in Buckinghamshire. And Oxfordshire.

Good question. I think I'd choose the name Pius XIII, but only because

Could you sort out St Catherine of Alexandria?
<SNIP>
Well, as I'm sure you appreciate I am a still a long way off the throne
of St Peter, but my preliminary thoughts are that given the whole
Catholic Church worships God, who doesn't exist, it's hypocritical to go
round taking away people's sainthoods just because they didn't exist
either.
So I shall be certain to reinstate Catherine of Alexandria.
Also, I'll stick your name up before the beatification committee for
being good enough to bring this matter to my attention.
Bless you, my son.
Ok, you get my vote.

Smoke-filled? Where's that come from then?
I assume the burning of different materials with the ballot papers to
produce either black or white smoke depending on whether the ballot has
led to the appointment of a new Pope.

It's the first signal that the outside world gets that the Conclave has
elected a Pontiff, as the Cardinals are forbidden, on pain of
excommunication, to pass messages to anybody outside of the conclave
during the election.

hmm....AndrewR for Pope.....has a nice ring to it. So what would be
your first proclomation then? :)
Good question. I think I'd choose the name Pius XIII, but only because
that will really confuse things for some people.
Other than that ... well, I don't know. Anybody fancy being officially

Could you sort out St Catherine of Alexandria?
My old College- St Catherine's, Oxford- is named after her. She
was a martyr, who some baddies tried to break on the wheel, but
then the wheel broke, thus qualifying her for sainthood.
So the college uses a wheel as its crest, and when it was built in
the early 60s the architect used a wheel motif throughout-
circular lawn in the quad, circular light fittings throughout,
wheel symbols on the cutlery, tapestries showing a wheel breaking.
Then a few years later St Catherine of Alexandria was decanonised,
on the grounds that she never existed. So now the College is named
after St Catherine of Siena, a medieval mystic who had nothing to
do with wheels at all.
The students wrote to the Pope and complained, but he didn't
answer.
What you gonna do about that, then?
Excomunicate the b*st*rd!

1. How do you even get to the stage of being a probationary member? It
seems to me that wandering up to a gang of 1%ers and saying, "Please

The Satan's Slaves in Exeter always seemed like a nice bunch to me -
we played them at volley ball once and they bought us all a drink
after we beat them.

OK, the president bloke who had a bat tat on his forehead was put
away for miscellaneous gun offenses, and the prospects were a bit
of a pain, but as long as you didn't throw up near their bikes or
go anywhere near their women, they were remarkably tolerant of
drunk students.

<SNIP, some stuff>
On a related note, since I went to the Rock 'n' Blues I've been
wondering how you go about becoming an Outlaw, an Angel or some-such.
Not that I'm thinking of doing it, any more than I'm thinking of
becoming Pope - it's just one of those things that has cpatured my
interest.
There were a number of probationary Outlaws wandering round the RnB, so
I know there is a certain amount of being shouted at and stuff to go
through, but I was more interested in the following;
Hang around in the rellevant pubs/clubs. Show an interest in what
they're doing and gradually get accepted/befriended untill they ask
you if you're interested in joining their club...
Post by Andrewr At Work
2. All of the probationary Outlaws looked very similar to existing
memebers - do you have to have the right look before you start or do
they give you a little sheet full of grooming and styling tips to help
you achieve that look?
All clubs like people that fit in. Maybe having the smae style of
clothing/haircut helps. Some clubs seem to welcome a diversity and
some don't. Having a similar attitude seems to be the main thing...
Post by Andrewr At Work
3. Is it actually possible to join if you are a sprots bike rider with
1 piece leathers, short hear and clean shaven visage?
If your attitude is right...
Post by Andrewr At Work
4. Do the people who join actually have real jobs? None of them looked
like they might just stick their leathers and stained jeans in the
wardrobe on Sunday night and head into the office on Monday morning -
not even as tech support staff.
I have some mates in a particular club. Their members include the head
customs officer at a major airport, a traffic cop, a ballet shoes/wear
salesman, a rare plants grower (orchids and such) and a well known
author... as well as various shady people and unemployables...
Post by Andrewr At Work
Amazingly the Outlaws web-site answers none of these questions, but I'm
sure that ukrm will know.

It's only a mode of transport for fucks sake.... or am I missing something?
How many car drivers do you know that would respond to a call from
your good self to "come for a bimble round the lanes of Essex" then?
How many car drivers would drive for 60+ miles for a 25 mile drive on
a Sunday morning, eh?

Is having a motorcycle a lifestyle and attitude change that is not only
visible from the outside but significantly changes the person within?
I reckon you'll find msot people who regularly use a motorcycle to be
more self-reliant than the average, probably more likely to put up
with significant personal discomfort, too - simply because that's what
using a bike entails.
Post by Cane
"Look out everyone, it's a biker"
There's an old dear (80 if she's a day) who bimbles around here,
dressed in a *huge* Belstaff which flaps in the breeze, prehistoric
pisspot helmet and WWI fighter pilot goggles which leave only the
expanse of facial wrinkles visible - on her scooter - who I wouldn't
like to meet in a dark alley, I tell you ;-)

I love bikes, I've been around them all my life. My Dad's into bikes too
so when I was wee I was taken to trials when he was competing, helped
marshall at our club moto-x, a couple of summer holidays at the TT etc. I
rode in trials from age 13 and on road bikes from 17 but I wouldn't call
myself a biker - just someone who's into bikes.

All this bollocks about "bikers" got me thinking.
SNIP
A friend of mine used to fulminate over this regularly, whereas I 've
never lost any sleep over it, it's just a word. I love my bikes and the
freedom of biking but I don't see myself as a "Biker", any more than I
do a "Car-er" but there are those that do - the wannabe outlaws usually.
And it's a handy label for the media to pin on a minority, in the lazy
way that they do.
I don't give it much of a thought but every so often it crops up in
conversation like it did when I was on the ferry from Dublin.
"so, you're a biker?" ... "err no, I'm a bloke with a bike"
That's the boring answer.

Your answer should have been. Yes, I'm a biker, but I only bite the heads
of chickens on Wednesdays... <fx: gets that mad look in your eyes> You..

Hmmm... we have the '"biker's nod" to each other - why? Because we are a
brotherhood? Do we *choose* to differentiate ourselves from other road
users?
Like in France. Bikers are differentiated. There's a lot more of the
unsung-friendship.

We're still a minority QED we're different. It's less so in the UK,
IMO, but groups like MAG and the BMF and other MCC's make us what we
are.

We are bikers, not "the bloke with the bike". I don't go out of my way
to think like this, but everyone (non-bikers) else seem to.

Your avaerage "biker" can be hard to spot, but a "hairy arsed biker" tends
to like grubby jeans, dislike anything with a fairing, loves his beer and
listens to loud music.

Nope, I still haven't captured it - there's still something much more

Well, here's a thought from some time ago, when a newbie [1] was
flouncing about bad language in UKRM, and I DFV'd to try and calm
him down.

I made the point that UKRM was full of bikers, as opposed to
motorcyclists, and that accounts for the language.

So, maybe the difference is: motorcyclists object to the word
"cunt" and bikers don't?

Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. Tonight after spending a couple of hours
fettling the bike and then going out for a 100 odd mile hoon for no real
reason I feel I'm a biker. Other times the bike might sit in the garage for
a couple of weeks because other things seem more important and I don't feel
I am. All down to the individual IMHO.

All this bollocks about "bikers" got me thinking.

Is having a motorcycle a lifestyle and attitude change that is not only
visible from the outside but significantly changes the person within?
"Look out everyone, it's a biker"
A lifestyle change, yes, possibly. A visible one, I dunno.

If you just keep a bike in the garage, use it for fine weather
commuting, the occasional long trip, a bit of summer recreation, then
"biker" doesn't seem to be the right word.

If you wear cut-offs in bed, think that Harleys, old Trumf and Norton
twins are God's gift to the panet, and your only form of four-wheeled
transport is a pick-up or a van, then maybe.

If your garage contains nothing but motorcycles, motorcycle spares,
clothing, junk, tools, posters, magazines and other paraphernalia; if
almost all of your spare time is spent riding, fiddling with, or just
cleaning bikes; if you'd rather ride a bike than drive a car on any
occasion with the possible exception of pissing rain or Arctic
weather; if you talk nostalgically about your favourite bikes even
when listeners' heads are nodding; if you remember the registration
numbers of more than four bikes you've owned; if you wear your helmet
more frequently than your favourite item of clothing.... then you're
probably as sad as I am.

if you remember the registration
numbers of more than four bikes you've owned;
MGJ 923P, XJE 11L, WCW 667T, GOA 519N, TTC 810T...
I've had well over 100 bikes and something like 50 cars, and I can
remember the registrations of pretty much every single one of them.

I couldn't tell you what I had for dinner last night though.

Caribbean Chicken Curry. Usually can't remember all of the registration of
whatever I am driving at the time though.

A lifestyle change, yes, possibly. A visible one, I dunno.
It's the oily residue under your fingernails that won't go away any
more that makes it 'visible'.

Nope, I still haven't captured it - there's still something much more
fundamental that I can't put my finger on...
Well there are different flavours of bikers - power rangers, commuters,
BOFs on ShiteOldeBikes, Newbies, BABs, posers, Angels......

Discounting scooter-commuters and Rodney from the wine bar who has
bought in to the lifestyle, most of us have in common a sense of
individuality, rebellion, and a thirst for risk-taking.

Yes, many tend to look out for fellow bikers, because of a sense of
kinship, but biking is, essentially, a solitary pursuit - even riding
in a group, you are still essentially isolated in your own little
world.

This is all, of course, utter bullshit.

I would consider myself a biker and I feel that bikes are a fundamental
part of who I am. Not just owning a bike, but the love of riding. You
couldn't take away my interest in bikes without changing me in a major
way.
It even gets to the point where, when I can't ride (as has been the case
a lot recently) I feel a big chunk of my life is missing and get quite
down about it.
Patch in the post...

Hmmm... we have the '"biker's nod" to each other - why? Because we are a
brotherhood? Do we *choose* to differentiate ourselves from other road
users?
A brotherhood??? oh, please.

I'd suggest I've less in common with most people riding
bikes on the road than I have with most people driving cars
to work.

I'd also suggest that the same applies to many in here.

There are "bikers" and there are people who ride bikes. I'd
equate bikers with patch club members
I know you've said this often before, but you're the only person who
I've heard associate 'biker' with patch clubs. When I was growing up,
pretty much anyone with a bike bigger than a 250 (i.e. held a full
license) and a black leather jacket was a biker.

Maybe it's just me. We all *called* ourselves bikers but I
didn't really believe most of us were.

And anyway... you removed the "or" clause in my statement.

Anyhow, bikers used to drive transit vans...
