Ask EU: Insomniac tablet

As somerats may remember, a few months ago I bought a new Windows
tablet. On the whole, it's OK but not great - I think the best thing
about it is being able to use it with my rat[1].

There is one huge problem though, in that it appears to suffer from
insomnia. If I put it in Sleep mode, rather than shutting down
completely, all too often, it will wake up again, opening all sorts of
windows and apps and squeaking plaintively :( As it lives beside my
bed, this really isn't something I appreciate and the only option seems
to be to shut it down fully each time, which means waiting forever to
get it going again, which rather defeats the object of having a tablet...

Do any rats have any suggestions of how to persuade it to go to sleep
and stay that way, until I want it again? I generally shut down all
apps before sending it to sleep, so I really don't know what's waking
them all up again.

Dunno for sure but, some hibernation menus allow you to choose what will
wake the ‘puter up, you may find that mice are one choice and tapping the
spacebar another; you may be able to de-select Mr. Mousey.

It might also (depending on how you receive email) be an email coming in
that wakes it - or other LAN activity. I'm sure I've seen "wake on LAN"
as a setting somewhere - I think in the BIOS rather than part of
Windows; I don't know how you access the BIOS on a tablet, but might be
worth looking there if you know how.

I thought, initially, that this might be the answer. I couldn't find
anywhere that would allow me to stop the rat waking it up but switching
the rat off, before shutting down the tablet did seem to make it go to
sleep more soundly at first.

However, it then woke up again, at midnight (when I'd been all but
asleep myself) and started squeaking repeatedly. When I opened it up,
it was not just awake but had started several apps, including Facebook,
Twitter and Messenger (I forget whether / what else) - none of which had
been running when I sent it to sleep. The only answer seemed to be to
shut it down completely, which I did, and it remained peaceful.

This time, at least, Thunderbird wasn't one of the apps that it opened
for me, although it has been in the past. When it's awake and running,
the arrival of messages / emails / tweets, or whatever doesn't provoke
it into opening the appropriate apps, so I don't see why it should do it
when it's sleeping!

I had found a setting which would allow it to disconnect from the
network when sleeping, but only when it was running on battery, not
when mains connected (as it was last night, to recharge).

The ‘at midnight’ may be significant; perhaps there is a function that
energises at that time and could be toggled off so as not to wake the
system. I feel that Micr$oft and other software writers seem to think we
must have everything running 24/7 and don’t want anything being delayed by
a single second - I blame the ‘now’ culture.

That was rather my thought, as well, although it isn't always midnight,
or any other obviously significant time, when it wakes up.

I don't use FB & Messenger, as I have an idealogical difference of
opinion with their founder. But twitter doesn't wake my tablet up at

I should clarify here that I don't use apps on Windows machines, as I
have the same idealogical differences of opion with the Microsoft
store wanting to know everything about me before letting me download
any of their pitiful selection of apps. But then, I don't use the
twitter app on my android devices either. There's a perfectly
reasonable web versiion that doesn't require storage on phone/tablet.

to be to shut it down fully each time, which means waiting forever to
get it going again, which rather defeats the object of having a tablet...
Do any rats have any suggestions of how to persuade it to go to sleep
and stay that way, until I want it again?  I generally shut down all
apps before sending it to sleep, so I really don't know what's waking
them all up again.

Many thanks. I'd also found this advice on one of the sites I found
when I was googling and I've reset it so that it isn't allowed to wake it.

Before that, after I'd been trying much the same with the rat, I set it
to sleep, only to immediately have it squeaking and being extremely
creative in which apps to wake. It mainly seemed to want to play with
stuff that I don't use!

After stopping the network adapter from waking it though, I put it back
to sleep and it seems to be sleeping peacefully. There was one small
problem, when I woke it up (deliberately) in that it had lost its wifi
connection but I got that back, sent it back to sleep and all is now
quiet. Fingers crossed that it stays that way and that the problem is
now fixed.

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted!

All was quiet until yesterday evening, when it started squeaking again
:( A bit later, it gave an amazing trill and, when I checked what it
was up to, it had dealt itself a game of solitaire, as well as opening
Audible, amongst other things. I can only assume it was planning to
spend the evening playing solitaire, while listening to the latest
Phillip Pullman...

Having closed everything down and sent it back to sleep, it started
squeaking again and this time, rather worryingly, I found several panels
asking me if I wanted to cancel my transfer to One Drive (something I
don't actually use)! I have no idea what it had been trying to transfer
for me...

I did double check, in Device Manager, and neither ratty nor the network
adaptor is supposed to be allowed to wake it.

adaptor is supposed to be allowed to wake it.

Yes, that occurred to me too. I now have a clean copy of BitDefender in

[1] aka a wireless trackball
Dunno for sure but, some hibernation menus allow you to choose what will
wake the ‘puter up, you may find that mice are one choice and tapping the
spacebar another; you may be able to de-select Mr. Mousey.
Thanks, that's a good suggestion; I'll check it out, when I go back
upstairs.
And check if the network adapter is allowed to wake the machine from
sleep - look in Device Management.
I have no idea what it had been trying to transfer
for me...

Yes, that occurred to me too.  I now have a clean copy of BitDefender in

Bitdefender thinks everything looks completely clean. I've decided my
next step is to exorcise the machine by doing a complete reset and
re-installation, including cleaning the disk. If it's still being kept
awake by ghosts after that, I'll probably try the Win 10 newsgroup
suggested by jpeg.

No, Serena, what you have here is a haunted tablet. Ring up the local
Catholic priest (they know more about this sort of thing than your
Anglican vicar) and get him round to yours with bell, book and candle.

It's possible it will come to that.

Having done a full reset, including cleaning the disk, the first time I
sent it to sleep, it woke up again and started an assortment of apps (I
forget which but, obviously, all the ones which are built in). Since
then though, it has been behaving itself so I may start installing the
software I actually want to use on it soon.

After it's initial fling of opening stuff, I'm not too hopeful.

No advice to offer, I'm afraid, but I'm just mentioning that I have a
similar but different problem with a netbook that wakes up not from
sleep or hibernation but from shutdown whenever the power cord is
connected or the battery swapped.

Slightly creepy is the way it consumes quite a lot of power whilst
shutdown inasmuch as a full, six-cell battery will be empty after a
couple of months compared with other laptop/netbook batteries which
are hardly dented by being left unused.

Extra doubly super creepy is the way it logged into my wi-fi without
my telling it how to[1] - though somebody said that might be because
it has an identical OS and login password etc to another Win8.1
machine and Microsoft might have shared common files or something when
it was on the old password. Anyway, I bought it very cheap as a spare
so I shall keep it in quarantine until I need to get the appropriate
round tuits to sort it out.

asking me if I wanted to cancel my transfer to One Drive (something I
don't actually use)!  I have no idea what it had been trying to transfer
for me...
I did double check, in Device Manager, and neither ratty nor the network
adaptor is supposed to be allowed to wake it.
Sorry, I should have said, also tell the network adapter to never power
off. And dare I ask - Have you checked for viruses/malware?

I installed Bitdefender, when I first got it but that was an early
suspect for waking the beast up, so I removed it some time ago. This
morning, I reinstalled a clean copy and did a full scan which gave a
full bill of health.

I've now done a full factory reset, including fully wiping the disc, and
it's currently going through the process of getting Windows up to date.
Once that's finished, I'll send it to sleep and see what happens. If
all looks well, I'll then start reinstalling stuff and see what happens.

Win10 allows me to set 'quiet hours' which, in theory, disables all
notifications. Maybe there is something like that in settings, under
notifications?

Hmm, that might help lessen the impact, at least at night, but I really
don't want it squeaking at me, when it's meant to be asleep, at any time
of the day or night. Nor do I want it opening assorted apps I have't
asked for.

Did mousey arrive with some software that you installed? You may find that
any such software allows you to open various apps (which, by the sound of
it, you do not wish it to open for you).

No specific software for ratty and it's only on the tablet that I have
problems. Ratty also works, very happily, when connected to my
laptop[1] and that has never woken up unexpectedly, nor do apps open
when I haven't asked them to. I also have an identical rat on my
desktop, which also behaves impeccably.

Umra is by far the most knowledgeable forum for such things that I'm
aware of but it will definitely be worth googling to see if I can find
any alternative sources of wisdom. The tablet came from Amazon and I
doubt they have that kind of knowledge about what they sell.

That was my thought if it was something like PC World, but apparently it
was amazon, so you probably can't ask them directly. However, you could
ask other users on their listing for it, which is near enough the same
thing.

If neither of those help: UMRA is indeed far more knowledgeable about
such matters than one might expect, but I'd give alt.comp.os.windows-10
(and possibly alt.windows7.general) a look-in - they're knowledgeable
and helpful, and include the peerless Paul, who isn't an UMRAt.

It's generally covered up, anyway and yes, it would be possible to turn
the sounds off, although that just adds more hassle to it, when the
point of a tablet is that you should be able to pick it up and it's
ready to go.

The bigger problem though is the fact that it's opening all sorts of
apps, and the question of what they may be doing. At best, I have to
close them all down again before I can try to do anything else.

At the moment though, it seems to be behaving itself. After it's one
fling of opening everything, just after reinstalling Windows, it hasn't
done it again. I've got some stuff reinstalled but haven't had the
energy to get it properly set up again yet. I'm just hoping it doesn't
get back into any of its bad habits.

Earlier this year, more in hope than expectation I bought a cheap (very)
smartphone from the Joom Chinese website. It was lovely. Plenty of
storage, fast response and initially no problems with it at all, but
after a couple of days an app I hadn't installed would appear, and the
only way I could get the phone to do anything else was to go into
settings and uninstall it. The boodly thing would be back the next day
with a couple more seriously unwanted apps. A bit of research showed me
that these phones come with a pre- installed virus which can't be
removed. A pity I didn't do the research before shelling out £30.00.

and stay that way, until I want it again?  I generally shut down all
apps before sending it to sleep, so I really don't know what's waking
them all up again.
Win10 allows me to set 'quiet hours' which, in theory, disables all
notifications. Maybe there is something like that in settings, under
notifications?
Could you not just turn off all its sounds then lay it face down or
cover it with a book so you don't see it lighting up?

But more, much more than this
I did it Huawei.[1]

[1]I didn't, in fact. I have a phone made by Umi (another Chinese
manufacturer of telephones, m'lud) which has served me very well for
over three years and which I hope will carry on so.

I have a phone made by Samsung and yesterday I found two apps on it I
had not installed. One was for Fiat and the other gave information about
Eurostar.
The worst of it is I can't find out how to dump them.

Press and hold down on the icon on the home screen and a menu should pop
up that allows you to uninstall.

Alternatively go to Settings >Apps and uninstall from there.

Both of these work on my Samsung 9.

I also have Lookout installed as an Antivirus. There's a free version
for basic functions, or about £20pa for a fuller service which is what I
pay.

Thanks, that seems to have worked.
