Discussion:
What is Reeky?

Everyone talks about Reeky. Here is all I could find:

To smoke, steam, or fume.
To be pervaded by something unpleasant: "This document ... reeks of
self-pity and self-deception" Christopher Hitchens.
To give off or become permeated with a strong unpleasant odor: "Grandma, who
reeks of face powder and lilac water" Garrison Keillor.
v.tr.
To emit or exude (smoke, for example).
To process or treat by exposing to the action of smoke.
n.
A strong offensive odor; a stench. See Synonyms at stench.
Vapor; steam.

Is there a different meaning?

If we told ya, we'd have to kill ya.

Besides why do you care. All you're gonna do is start a new thread
wondering why more reverse thread bolts are not used on motorcycles.

Once upon a fabled time, rec.motorcycles was frequented by more than just
the small bunch of inbred jerk offs you see here today. A bunch of the
Texans apparently also frequented a regional message board, and wrote of
"us" here as Reeky, in reference to rec.m, to distinguish from them thar.
Being inbred and not very bright, we adopted the slur as our own. Hence,
Reeky is rec.moto as you know it today, but only in name. BTW, the
descriptions and definitions you posited are quite good. They do us proud.

Much as we "inbred" and "not very bright" Americans adopted the
moniker "Yankee" from the satirical British song "Yankee Doodle" back
during the American Revolution. (We have a habit of doing that sort of
thing in the belief that laughing at yourself is healthy.)

What'sa matter Mikey: nobody been giving you the adoration you need

Did you ever see that Beau Bridges movie where he's a cesspool diver
in Appalachia?

He shows up in front of a tumbledown hillbilly shack, dressed in an
immaculate white suit, white shoes, white hat and necktie. He looks
like a skinny Colonel Sanders.

The hillbillies ask what a fine gentleman like him is doing in the
hills, and he explains that he makes a good living as a travelling
cesspool diver. He offers to jump in their cesspool for fifty cents.

The hillbillies agree that they would like to see such a funny thing
and they manage to dig up fifty cents.

Bridges takes off his hat and puts on a pair of swimming goggles and
jumps into the cesspool and splashes around for five minutes.

Then the hillbillies help him out and he goes over and sits down on
the porch.

After about twenty minutes, the hillbillies ask if he's done resting
from his swim in the cesspool and he says yes, but the way he really
makes his living as a cesspool diver is to charge his audience $50,
whereupon he will *leave*!

So. I've been paddling around in this cesspool called *Reeky* for
three or four years now.

What will you pay me to leave?

The analogy kinda breaks down, though, due to the fact
that Krusty hardly showed up in a white suit, and smelled
that way BEFORE swimming in the cesspool.

Uh, nobody said anything about Google having any "control" of anything
except you.
And yes, they *do* have a way of knowing -more or less- how many
posters are subscribed to a given newsgroup: since they offer their
"Google Groups" service they simply had to write a program that
counted the number of different email addys posts were being sent

And presumably that's exactly what they did, since they *do*
prominantly list the number of "members" of each group a member is

You certainly implied it since you said Google Groups list the number
of members next to every newsgroup. The only way they could do that is
if they controlled the newsgroup- they do have their own private newsgroups
but they don't control Usenet. And they don't make it very clear that
their private newsgroups are qualitatively different from Usenet newsgroups.

That is simply the number of people who have subscribed to each

of subscribers to Usenet newsgroups.

I am subscribed to Google Groups. So they count me there. But they're not
counting people who are subscribed through Giganews, news.individual.net,
the Motzarella server and countless other news providers. They're also
not counting me when I post through my ISP's news server (outsourced to
Supernews/Giganews).

That is simply the number of people who have subscribed to each
group _through them_. That is a small fraction of the total number
of subscribers to Usenet newsgroups.

As a news server, Google could just as easily record the IPs of *all*
the posts that it sends along to it's newsgroup subscribers, no matter
*where* they originated; it isn't limited to only knowing about it's
own.

But in any case, what you've just done is make my point even *more*
clearly than when I said "with over 1700 current members, 'small
bunch' is hardly the phrase". If Google indeed can only count it's own
subscribers, there must be many, many more than 1700 out there...

So. You didn't even know what the origin of "white trash" was, then.

The poor Whites weren't "trash" because of innate immorality or
stupidity, anymore than today's long term unemployed are stupid and
lazy.

The wealthy Southern aristocracy in the Ante Bellum period looked down
their long narrow noses at the poor White tradesmen who could not
begin to compete in an unfair economic situation where the rich had
all the free labor they wanted and didn't need to hire any White
people to do the work.

The same situation is impacting working class Whites all over America
now,
as affirmative action pushes Blacks ahead of Whites in college
admissions, and
global capitalists import cheap labor from overseas and the government
ignores
illegal immigraion.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, authoress of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" described how
lack of any chance to better themselves caused hundreds of thousands
of
poor Whites to emigrate west.

Today's poor Whites have no place to go, they will just have to
suffer.

http://www.iath.virginia.edu/utc/uncletom/key/keyIII10t.html

Stowe also described conflicts in Grayson and Carrol counties in
western Virginia between northern abolitionists and Southerners who
were profiting from the slave-based economy of the South.

My great great grandfather and his brother emigrated to Illinois in
the 1840's to better themselves.

My great grandfather was a college graduate when he pioneered the
Dakota Territory in the 1880's.

Newsgroups don't have members. They have "regular contributors".
Tell it to Google, who list the number of "members" next to every
Newsgroup.
Google have no control whatsoever, and indeed have no way of even
knowing how many people subscribe to any Usenet newsgroup.
Uh, nobody said anything about Google having any "control" of anything
except you.
And yes, they *do* have a way of knowing -more or less- how many
posters are subscribed to a given newsgroup: since they offer their
"Google Groups" service they simply had to write a program that
counted the number of different email addys posts were being sent
from.

And presumably that's exactly what they did, since they *do*
prominantly list the number of "members" of each group a member is
subscribed to.

Really sophisticated, I'm certain, and culls out crossposts. I must have way
too many (or possibly just one too few) bozo filters. I'm not seeing posts
from 1700+ unique posters.

Afaik, Google "subscribers" are just that. Not the number of people
who have read or contributed to public newsgroups, but the number of
Google members who have subscribed to a particular newsgroup through
the Google usenet interface.

You poor dumb shit, you got it exactly backwards.

(A) Each newsgroup that Google shows has a *different* number of
subscribers shown, so the number (1700+) we're speaking of here refers
to the subscribers of each *individual group* -in this case, Reeky-
not the total number of subscribers to Google Groups, which is
probably somewhere closer to a million or so.

(B) "Subscribers" and "posters" are two different categories: not
everyone who's subscribed bothers reading a group regularly, and of
those who do not all post regularly, or even at all.

(C) That number (1700+) is what leads me to think that Google is
keeping track of all the different IPs that show up from other
servers: it seems *way* too high for Google users alone given the
message traffic on Reeky, but is probably just about right for the
total number of users world-wide, including regulars, non-posters who
still read the group, and those who *have* posted here but who no
longer do.

(D) Have a nice day.

Exactly. You're at least starting to catch up with the rest of the
pack here.

Now the remaining thing for you to consider is that each of those
numbers are made up of only *Google* users who have subscribed to
those newsgroups.

Meaning that, unless everyone in the world uses Google to read
newsgroups, you are badly mistaken.
Post by Twibil
(B) "Subscribers" and "posters" are two different categories: not

There's no controversy on that point.

Your hypothesis would sound reasonable if the numbers dealt with
actual posters (but then we wouldn't have a number like 1,700 for
Reeky), since it would be easy to track that.

But tracking people who simply read? Reading via all the servers
providing newsgroup services out there? As far as I know, they simply
cache the data periodically and pass it along. The administrators of
all those systems would grant Google that kind of access to their
systems? No way.
Post by Twibil
(D) Have a nice day.
You too. I think we can still agree that, in terms of one group's
popularity versus another, the Google numbers give a good basis for
comparison; which is the main point anyway. Just not the actual
numbers.

Once upon a fabled time, rec.motorcycles was frequented by more than just
the small bunch of inbred jerk offs you see here today.
With something over 1700 current members, "small bunch" is hardly the
phrase. Even for a Texan.
Post by MikeWhy
A bunch of the
Texans apparently also frequented a regional message board, and wrote of
"us" here as Reeky, in reference to rec.m, to distinguish from them thar.
Being inbred and not very bright, we adopted the slur as our own.
Much as we "inbred" and "not very bright" Americans adopted the
moniker "Yankee" from the satirical British song "Yankee Doodle" back
during the American Revolution. (We have a habit of doing that sort of
thing in the belief that laughing at yourself is healthy.)

What'sa matter Mikey: nobody been giving you the adoration you need
lately?

=====
Eh? Au contraire. When I wrote "us" earlier, I really meant "y'all",
excluding I and me, my superiority and distinction from the masses being a
foregone conclusion. By definition, given the nature of Reeky.

As a small matter of passing interest, 11/7/95 was the earliest use of
"reeky" in r.m I found in a simplistic google search. Popular usage didn't
catch on until ... it's hard to tell, looking at the nonsense search results
pages. I hate what they've done to the place; newsgroup searches are
meaningless for the lack of understandable results.

didn't catch on until ... it's hard to tell
I think as soon as ukrm appeared and all the brits buggered off, they (in
ukrm) seemed to refer to reeky with a certain affection like that for a
dead parent.

we adopted the slur as our own.
Yep. Much like RMH wears the "assholes" term with pride.

Once upon a fabled time, rec.motorcycles was frequented by more than just
the small bunch of inbred jerk offs you see here today.
Yep. Back when I started posting in '96, it was an almost completely
different small bunch of inbred jerk offs than the bunch you see here
today.

Yes but occassionally we try to hide the smell by burning copious
quantities of Race fuel mixed with castor oil. Then only way to smell
better is if you run methonol, nitiromethane and castor oil in you
motorcycle. 8^)

I tried that once with a Harley. Quickest way I ever found to split a piston
vertically.

It works best on 2-strokes. It can work in agricultural equipment if
you raise the compression and use artificial induction. Oh adn run
