the previous tenant of this flat and died in 2002! Just brought it
home to me (pardon the pun) that I've lived here 18 years and a few
days - longer than I've lived anywhere and it's not my favourite by a
long chalk.
I still get the odd call for the person (Sharen [yes], an accountant)
who had the _number_ before I did. (I got it 2007, and I assume whoever
- BT? - let it "lie fallow" a few years before giving it to me. [She
didn't live here.]) I tell the caller the right number, having found it.
Thankfully the calls (mostly debt-collectors I think) for the previous
owner of my number [he had never lived here] stopped after about three
years.
I do still get calls which start with Mr [husgod's surname]? after I say
hello. I do have a deep voice, so usually ask who is calling at that point.
If it turns out they are trying to sell me something, depending on my mood
I might point out he has never lived here, or burst into tears and say he's
dead, or just tell them that cannot be who they want to talk to and hang
up.
People who make phone calls for a living should not make assumptions about
the person they are speaking to just from their voice. On occasions I have
continued the conversation and been addressed as Sir the whole way through.
Even asking why they are calling me Sir has not caused the penny to drop.
