I have never heard of Blat doing this. How are you calling Blat?

When you post to the list, please include;
The version of Blat you are using,
The command line you used to run Blat (please use -debug),
The output of the -debug command.

Please change any eMail or server addresses - it is never

Yes, you can use 127.0.0.1 to direct Blat to the local network
adaptor's loopback address (which is what you are doing...).

I used to do this all the time using http://www.blat.net/miniRelay/
all the time until my ISP started blocking outbound SMTP on port 25.

The part about credentials depends entirely on the SMTP service
running on your machine.

The dll and exe are both supposed to work the same way (compiled from
the same source at the same time). If you find something does not work
in the dll, please post to the list so we can work on it...

I use Optimum OnLine and they block port 25 for their standard
residential service. In order to get them to remove the block I had to
'upgrade' to their business service for an additional $30 a month. There are
absolutely no other benefits attached to this upgrade. I did manage to get
through to a tech who explained that they monitor for 300 emails/hr and no
more than 25 recipient addresses per email. This is a major downer since
many of my projects involve email automation, and, during development, I
need to send many emails (mostly to myself) for testing.
Another not surprising discovery is that the domain name,
'oolsucks.com,' has been parked and is not available as a website.

Home for a moment before continuing my motorcycle vacation.

Home ISP is BellSouth on DSL. I also use AT&T through SSL provided by
stunnel. The SSL connection is on port 465 for outbound traffic. Neither
provider seems to limit my transfer rate or access, given the SSL
restriction.

This sounds like an email client problem, not Blat. Use the -log option to
write a log of Blat's activities, and also use the -superdebugT option so
you can log the message as Blat transmits it. This will verify that Blat is
not altering the filename.

Which email client are you viewing that test messages with? Are you also
using a spam filter, or A/V filter?

for testing with a smtp service on this machine.
As localhost and 127.0.0.1 can be used interchangable I have
no doubts that 127.0.0.1 would work too. And come to think of
it, I may have used "-server 127.0.0.1" already on the command
line.
Actually I'm not a user of the blat.dll, but I have full
confidence into Chip that it works like it is supposed to be
(like the exe) unless shown otherwise. ;-)

Hi folks,

Here is one of those head-scratchers....

I send out regular emails to a list of people, and use a batch job to run through a list of addresses and send the email to each one directly instead of using a bcc (having a number of names in a bcc at one point seemed to flag my email address as spam).
When out of town on business, I have had emails bounce back as spam, yet when I send an email to someone directly using Outlook Express they seem to get it ok.
I ran into the same thing today with a member of my address list who happens to use Yahoo as their email provider. They sent me a note saying they had not gotten my emails in a month, yet I have sent 10+ emails since July 1st. When I replied to this person, I also sent the message to them via a different email address, and they got both emails.

So, the head-scratcher - what is different between Outlook Express and Blat emails (I guess it would be the headers) that might cause one email to get trapped as spam (I am guessing that is why the emails disappeared) and the other to be sent through ok.

Any ideas?

I've just had the same experience. I run a tennis list and I have different
problems with aol and cs when I use different smtp's. My solution, which I
can't entirely confirm yet, was to send via the -t switch (not -b which I
usually use as well) over my depressing cable service, optimum online. I
asked each recipient to reply to an address at my rejected smtp. Once they
did this, subsequent emails seem to have gone through ok.

Greetings,

I've had my share of strange email delivery problems.
One day email is treated as spam, the next time it
goes through with out a problem.

The only "solution" I know of is to put a little
warning message to let people know to check their bulk
or spam folder when signing up for a email list or
password conformation. I also recommend that they white
list my entire domain eg, namtog dot com.

Since most folks don't seem to know what a white list
is I spend a fair amount of time learning how their
email service works and then trying to explain it to
the ones who, are surely in the minority, bother to ask.

Since email is basically free maybe some are trying
to poison it with pseudo spam. Until they can sell
us some sort of verification or protection service.
I've checked a few UCE emails and there is no phone number
or email address to contact or purchase from them.

Right now there are about 300 spam or UCE messages in
my in box. About three or four get past the filters and
end up in my in box every day.

I appreciate all of the work to limit spam, but false
positives are a major big time problem. Far more trouble
then deleting a few messages once in a while.

In closing if a spammer is reading this newsgroup.
1. I don't have a mortgage on my home so there is
no need to refinance it.
2. I am fortunate to have a good woman in my life and
do not want to meet hot singles in my area.
3. My penis is big enough, thanks for asking

You could try using the -noh2 option...
It will "prevent X-Mailer header entirely" in the headers.

Hi Chip,
I had them check their bulk mail folder and the missing emails were not there. I sent an email via Outlook Express, and then followed it with the latest email via Blat. He is getting the emails from either email address when sent via Outlook Express, but the ones I send via Blat he does not. Very strange. Maybe it is worthwhile getting a Yahoo id I can test with.

I'll look at my address list and see who else is on Yahoo and see if they are having the same issue.

Have the recipient on Yahoo go into their Bulk folder and find your messages, then report that message or messages as Not Spam. This should trigger Yahoo's spam filter to allow your messages through.

Yahoo will not tell what their criteria is without allowing spammers to bypass the filters.

to me with one exception.

"If you do not wish to receive these emails, simply reply to this
email with UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line, or somewhere in the
message and you will be removed from the mailing list."

I suspect some email filters will react to the word UNSUBSCIBE.
You might want to try "...simply reply to this email with STOP in the
subject line..."

By the way, nicely formated email. Very easy to read.

Interesting thought on UNSUBSCRIBE. I was under the impression that having unsubscribe instructions would be a benefit.

Then again, I thought at one point that Word could generate useful HTML documents.... :)

Maybe I will send the original file via my own email address to the person having problems. If it is content like you mention then they should not get it...

Edumacate me, if you would. Does Yahoo have levels of spam filtering? I know that Earthlink has several levels. Could it be that this person has set it higher than other folks, and that could be the problem? (I have a query in to this person to see if that is so. They mentioned letting the bulk mail folder fill to see how long Yahoo would keep messages. They had 2400 messages in there. I don't look at my Earthlink spam folder, they clear out old messages automajically.)

looks like SBC to me, too.

I wonder if this is the way all of them are going. I don't
see how this will help stop spam.

When you connect to the MX server of the receiving domain directly
you don't have to authenticate because it is bound to accept any
incoming message for its domain (it cannot distinguish between your
machine and all the other email servers worldwide contacting it
to deliver mail to it).
In forcing you to go over their email server outgoing, they gain
control back over what you are doing smtp-wise.

email account?

As said, the ISP has control over the smtp-output in this case
and can implement further restrictions like mentioned in previous
posts (messages/h, addresses/message).

headers myself and came across, what I think,
is a interesting link;

I'm also a little confused. Should I start referring

Tim "jean.nerdshack.com" Musson. It's such a modern
age. Many of these type of situations confuse me.

LOL, looks like 'karen' and 'jean' are server names (I had not looked
before either, so it was a surprise to me.) It is always fun to see
what people name their servers... The old naming convention at my
current client used Golf course names!

nerdshak.com is where I ended up finding a decent free pop3 service
after my previous one dropped me for not using the Unix shell (which
is actually the service they provide - pop3 mail was just an add-on,
but the only part I used regularly...) My only complaint about
nerdshack is the eMail does not always arrive in order (my pop3 client
takes care of it, but it makes it hard to follow a thread when one of
the messages is 4 hours late.)
