Money is what makes the mare to go....and some people will do anything for
money. The story is no different in Goa's tourism. We have put concrete and
security guards on our beaches and have kept them out-of-bounds for our
children......so that the tourists can enjoy them at leisure. Goans are
getting street smart enroute to living in the streets in order to accomodate
the tourists.

There was another incident in few months' back at he Travel Mart in Dubai,
Goa had its own pavilion and when some Goans visited it they were

surprised

to see some girls dancing to the tune of Vengaboys music and dressed in

mini

skirt and short blouses...." at least with this type of Music you can

attract business."

Anything can happen if non-Goans lead the Goan Tourism delegation and a
non-Goan happens to be the Tourism Director of Goa.

Miguel,

I think you are a little confused about the on-going
discussion. You are talking about Goans in Goa who
dislike the foreign tourists who take up valuable
beach space. The prior discussion was about Goans
living abroad complaining about Indians (non-goans)
taking over Goa's beaches.

I propose the following solution to the above
problems. For the benefit of the local goans, we
should ask all the foreign tourists to take their
money to Rajasthan and Kashmir instead of coming to
Goa. The resultant creation of jobs there will lead to
the non-goans from these regions to return to their
homes, thus making the expat goans happy.

Right from theinception the issue was about the
caption being wrong and offensive, some went to the
extent of extremisim of some culture blah
blah......and now it has been sealed off that it was
indeed wrong.

Kudos to all those Goans I stress G O E N K A R S for
showing their concern on this caption and fighting it
out with positive contribution until it was truly
believed that this caption was wrong, and G O E N K A
R S are no more going to gulp down nonsense.

I remember the controversy over the Air India calender mentioned by Rene
Barreto as I happened to be in Goa during that period (1988-89). It was not
that the calender cheapened the image of Goan women, but it described Goans
as "descendents of the Portuguese!"

I recall condemning the callousness of Air India in my column (Small Talk)
in The Navhind Times. In the face of mounting pressure, Air India withdrew
the offending calender and apologised.

Since we're at it again, let me reproduce here a portion of a private mail
from Eddie Fernandes, who has been a sane voice throughout the current
controversy:

"I am of the opinion that the woman in the picture could be a Goan. The
anthropologists define 34 communities as being Goan. The Lamanis are one of
them. So if she is a Lamani, she is a Goan.

Of course the question also is, Who are Goans? Since I am no expert I can
accept the views of the anthropologists. Shriodkar and Mandal write that
the Lamanis migrated to Goa in the early 1960s and settled there. That
qualifies them as being Goans. Therefore, there is no need for Eddie
Gilbert to correct the caption or make an apology."

Makes sense, doesn't it? I think that should settle the issue.

In response to Vivek's question as to why I did not reference a Konkani movie: I regret to say that I've never seen a Konkani movie. :-(



I chose "Ms.Braganza" from KKHH because, from what I remember (I haven't seen the movie in a while), she was depicted as being some sort of westernized, 30-something, short-skirt wearing, flirt. I am NOT saying that this accurately depicts Goan women. What I was trying to say in an attempt at humour was that it seemed that those who were outraged about how this photo of a Lamani woman somehow gave Goa a "cheap image" would probably have expressed very little outrage if it were a photo of "Ms.Braganza" instead.



As an aside, I did not know about this contraversy mentioned by Radhakrishnan Nair regarding Air India inaccurately referring to Goans as "descendants of the Portuguese".



I don't mean to start another argument but I must say that I'm surprised that there was pressure to change that. I have encountered many Goans (especially in my age group) who have been programmed to say that they're somehow half-Portuguese or otherwise have Portuguese blood in their lineage.

security guards on our beaches and have kept them out-of-bounds for our
children......so that the tourists can enjoy them at leisure. Goans are

I think you are a little confused about the on-going
discussion. You are talking about Goans in Goa who
dislike the foreign tourists who take up valuable
beach space. The prior discussion was about Goans
living abroad complaining about Indians (non-goans)
taking over Goa's beaches.

I propose the following solution to the above
problems. For the benefit of the local goans, we
should ask all the foreign tourists to take their
money to Rajasthan and Kashmir instead of coming to
Goa. The resultant creation of jobs there will lead to
the non-goans from these regions to return to their
homes, thus making the expat goans happy.

We should just use a photo of the "Ms.Braganza" character from the movie "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai"!



We'll have to keep the fact that she spoke Hindi a secret though. We wouldn't want to give off a "cheap image" you know. ;)

I remember the controversy over the Air India calender mentioned by Rene
Barreto as I happened to be in Goa during that period (1988-89). It was not
that the calender cheapened the image of Goan women, but it described Goans
as "descendents of the Portuguese!"

I recall condemning the callousness of Air India in my column (Small Talk)
in The Navhind Times. In the face of mounting pressure, Air India withdrew
the offending calender and apologised.

Since we're at it again, let me reproduce here a portion of a private mail
from Eddie Fernandes, who has been a sane voice throughout the current
controversy:

"I am of the opinion that the woman in the picture could be a Goan. The
anthropologists define 34 communities as being Goan. The Lamanis are one of
them. So if she is a Lamani, she is a Goan.

Of course the question also is, Who are Goans? Since I am no expert I can
accept the views of the anthropologists. Shriodkar and Mandal write that
the Lamanis migrated to Goa in the early 1960s and settled there. That
qualifies them as being Goans. Therefore, there is no need for Eddie
Gilbert to correct the caption or make an apology."

Makes sense, doesn't it? I think that should settle the issue.

In response to Vivek's question as to why I did not reference a Konkani movie: I regret to say that I've never seen a Konkani movie. :-(



I chose "Ms.Braganza" from KKHH because, from what I remember (I haven't seen the movie in a while), she was depicted as being some sort of westernized, 30-something, short-skirt wearing, flirt. I am NOT saying that this accurately depicts Goan women. What I was trying to say in an attempt at humour was that it seemed that those who were outraged about how this photo of a Lamani woman somehow gave Goa a "cheap image" would probably have expressed very little outrage if it were a photo of "Ms.Braganza" instead.



As an aside, I did not know about this contraversy mentioned by Radhakrishnan Nair regarding Air India inaccurately referring to Goans as "descendants of the Portuguese".



I don't mean to start another argument but I must say that I'm surprised that there was pressure to change that. I have encountered many Goans (especially in my age group) who have been programmed to say that they're somehow half-Portuguese or otherwise have Portuguese blood in their lineage.

money. The story is no different in Goa's tourism. We have put concrete and
security guards on our beaches and have kept them out-of-bounds for our
children......so that the tourists can enjoy them at leisure. Goans are
getting street smart enroute to living in the streets in order to accomodate
the tourists.

I think you are a little confused about the on-going
discussion. You are talking about Goans in Goa who
dislike the foreign tourists who take up valuable
beach space. The prior discussion was about Goans
living abroad complaining about Indians (non-goans)
taking over Goa's beaches.

I propose the following solution to the above
problems. For the benefit of the local goans, we
should ask all the foreign tourists to take their
money to Rajasthan and Kashmir instead of coming to
Goa. The resultant creation of jobs there will lead to
the non-goans from these regions to return to their
homes, thus making the expat goans happy.

I remember the controversy over the Air India calender mentioned by Rene
Barreto as I happened to be in Goa during that period (1988-89). It was not
that the calender cheapened the image of Goan women, but it described Goans
as "descendents of the Portuguese!"

I recall condemning the callousness of Air India in my column (Small Talk)
in The Navhind Times. In the face of mounting pressure, Air India withdrew
the offending calender and apologised.

Since we're at it again, let me reproduce here a portion of a private mail
from Eddie Fernandes, who has been a sane voice throughout the current
controversy:

"I am of the opinion that the woman in the picture could be a Goan. The
anthropologists define 34 communities as being Goan. The Lamanis are one of
them. So if she is a Lamani, she is a Goan.

Of course the question also is, Who are Goans? Since I am no expert I can
accept the views of the anthropologists. Shriodkar and Mandal write that
the Lamanis migrated to Goa in the early 1960s and settled there. That
qualifies them as being Goans. Therefore, there is no need for Eddie
Gilbert to correct the caption or make an apology."

Makes sense, doesn't it? I think that should settle the issue.

In response to Vivek's question as to why I did not reference a Konkani movie: I regret to say that I've never seen a Konkani movie. :-(



I chose "Ms.Braganza" from KKHH because, from what I remember (I haven't seen the movie in a while), she was depicted as being some sort of westernized, 30-something, short-skirt wearing, flirt. I am NOT saying that this accurately depicts Goan women. What I was trying to say in an attempt at humour was that it seemed that those who were outraged about how this photo of a Lamani woman somehow gave Goa a "cheap image" would probably have expressed very little outrage if it were a photo of "Ms.Braganza" instead.



As an aside, I did not know about this contraversy mentioned by Radhakrishnan Nair regarding Air India inaccurately referring to Goans as "descendants of the Portuguese".



I don't mean to start another argument but I must say that I'm surprised that there was pressure to change that. I have encountered many Goans (especially in my age group) who have been programmed to say that they're somehow half-Portuguese or otherwise have Portuguese blood in their lineage.

I think you are a little confused about the on-going
discussion. You are talking about Goans in Goa who
dislike the foreign tourists who take up valuable
beach space. The prior discussion was about Goans
living abroad complaining about Indians (non-goans)
taking over Goa's beaches.

I propose the following solution to the above
problems. For the benefit of the local goans, we
should ask all the foreign tourists to take their

Money is what makes the mare to go....and some people will do anything for
money. The story is no different in Goa's tourism. We have put concrete and
security guards on our beaches and have kept them out-of-bounds for our
children......so that the tourists can enjoy them at leisure. Goans are
getting street smart enroute to living in the streets in order to accomodate
the tourists.

Anything can happen if non-Goans lead the Goan Tourism delegation and a
non-Goan happens to be the Tourism Director of Goa.

Miguel,

I think you are a little confused about the on-going
discussion. You are talking about Goans in Goa who
dislike the foreign tourists who take up valuable
beach space. The prior discussion was about Goans
living abroad complaining about Indians (non-goans)
taking over Goa's beaches.

I propose the following solution to the above
problems. For the benefit of the local goans, we
should ask all the foreign tourists to take their
money to Rajasthan and Kashmir instead of coming to
Goa. The resultant creation of jobs there will lead to
the non-goans from these regions to return to their
homes, thus making the expat goans happy.

in the picture is neither Goan, nor Rajasthani nor a Kashmiri.

She's a Lamani migrant.

The caption is patently wrong and offensive to call her a native of Goa. It
must be corrected immediately with an apology.

Right from theinception the issue was about the
caption being wrong and offensive, some went to the
extent of extremisim of some culture blah
blah......and now it has been sealed off that it was
indeed wrong.

Kudos to all those Goans I stress G O E N K A R S for
showing their concern on this caption and fighting it
out with positive contribution until it was truly
believed that this caption was wrong, and G O E N K A
R S are no more going to gulp down nonsense.

Well I have a suggestion for a replacement picture to accompany the "Native Woman of Goa" caption.



We should just use a photo of the "Ms.Braganza" character from the movie "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai"!



We'll have to keep the fact that she spoke Hindi a secret though. We wouldn't want to give off a "cheap image" you know. ;)
