I have a business client with his own domain name that is looking to
switch email service providers for his company. Internet service or web
hosting are both not needed

Any recommendations? Should be less than $100/year

I have been using pobox.com for forwarding and outgoing mail ONLY.
These services have been flawless, for years. My occasional
interactions with the staff indicates that they are competent.

Pobox.com also offers a complete (mailstore + webmail + outgoing)
service for $50/year. I have not used this service myself.

- Google Apps for Business - $50 per user/year
- Fastmail - $15 per account/year + $60 per user/year = $75 per year for 1 user

Here are a few comparisons (as usually quickly getting outdated):

http://grexit.com/blog/gmail-vs-fastmail-a-blunt-comparison/
http://web.appstorm.net/reviews/email-apps/fastmail-is-my-favourite-email-provider/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_webmail_providers

Both support POP, IMAP and SMTP w/SSL for use without Web UI.

I prefer Gmail:

- better Web UI (use keyboard shortcuts!)
- native apps for Android and iOS
- imap/smtp support for stand-alone clients
- contact and calendar sync
- better spam filtering

But Fastmail is a great contender, especially once they release calendar and contact synchronization...

I think the user count is 3 or 4 so per user fees build up quickly.

Two more cheaper (but less stellar) options:

- Hover (aka Tucows) - 50 mailboxes for $150 (with better feature set and SLA)
- Dreamhost - unlimited mailboxes/domains/etc included with their Web Hosting plans for around $100/year

At $9.95/month for the "Basic" account (with up to 100 separate email
accounts) the Verio service seems ideal with its 99.9% uptime:

http://www.verio.com/web-hosting/plans/

Click the [Features] tab for specific details. There's a choice of
a FreeBSD server or a Windows server. Mine is FreeBSD since 1995:

thadlabs bash 50818/50821> date
Wed Feb 12 12:15:13 PST 2014
thadlabs bash 50818/50821> uptime
12:15PM up 847 days, 10:32, 4 users, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
thadlabs bash 50818/50821> uname -sn
FreeBSD thadlabs.com
thadlabs bash 50818/50821>

And I only had to submit two support tickets in almost 20 years and
one of them was discovered to be a routing issue in Silicon Valley
and not a Verio issue.

It's 24/7/365 support either telephone or using their "Back Room"
servers. I'm a very happy camper with them as are over 20+ friends
and neighbors who are presently using them per my recommendation.

In case it's not obvious, this is *NOT* the same Verio that
bought Best Internet in 1995. That Verio was acquired by
NTT-Japan (NTT = Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, Japan's
equivalent to the original AT&T) and it's presently a world-
class operation:

http://www.verio.com/about/value/data-centers/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verio

Here's a description of their data centers (49 pages, 3.1MB):

Well "that" or "this" Verio is certainly way better than the Verio that
bought Best. I remember the hassles dealing with them after the purchase.

And while on the subject of small ISPs, whatever became of two of my
favorites, CRL (Couch Research Labs, Jim Couch) and WCO (West Coast Online)?
I think one of the former principals of WCO reads this newsgroup. Ah, the
days when I could be simply dk@ 3-letter domain.com -- it looks like WCO is
now part of Verio. And CRL?
