The BBC has said that TA will not be broadcast on Fridays for the
foreseeable to eke out the remaining episodes. I don't know why Friday and
not Sunday which would have made more sense to me.

This has been a PSA.

Perhaps because the Friday episode doesn't get a stand-alone repeat, so
they only lose 15 minutes of airtime.

Or perhaps because nobody would start a nuclear war just at the start of
Shabat.

So we're going to get lots of Monday cliffhangers instead? Will the
Omnibus be shorter? Will the Borsetshire time-space continuum be even
more stretched out than it was over the Gay Grables Catastrophe? Will
Easter come at Christmas?

How hard would it be to slow down the recordings by just the right
amount to cover the shortfall?
I bet no-one would even notice.

Ooo, interesting plan - might mess up the flow of the plot though.

I usually listen to audio books at 125% production speed (150% if Stephen
Fry is reading).

Whilst I often slow down Youtube videos (history and stuff), since some
presenters seem determined to break speech speed records.

Oh but I’m sure they would notice! It is not hard to accomplish at all - so
many things are feasible in the digital domain; the recordings could be
treated to a resampling resulting in longer duration files - these would
also reduce the pitch or register. Halving speed takes the frequencies down
an octave, but also sounds rather unnatural, doubles reverberation time and
of course slows the rate of delivery somewhat and this can sound very odd.
Another method of lengthening the files or recordings is to place greater
gaps between utterances but, again even when filled with ambient sounds,
this can sound rather odd and delivery would soon wear on the listeners! I
have used many methods for effect in the past; re-pitching quarter of a
semitone on a solo instrument frinstance, lowering the pitch several
octaves for effect and slowing / speeding up delivery but - in many cases
the effect is noticeable and needs to be used sparingly.

It would only need to be one sixth slower, so between 4 and 5 semitones.
Then put it through autotune to bring it back up. Viola! TA with crappy
sound.

A few years ago a noted Christian singer/ songwriter came to our church
to record a live album. It was at the time when recordings were
transitioning from tape to cd, and the pastor of the church was an ex-
BBC sound engineer, so he was entrusted with producing the cd. He was
fond of a practial joke or two though, and made an identical copy,
except speeded up by 20%, and this was the version he gave to our guest
musician to evaluate. Oh how he laughed. The proper version went into
production though and is still considered a classic of its kind.

Maybe they will give us back the doom music!!

This could be the moment to bring back the Uncle Tom type narration
that preceded the Sunday omnibus many years ago. But use it every day
as padding. But who should have that role?

My choice would be the all-seeing eye of Joe Grundy, looking down on
Ambridge from the great cider shed in the sky.

Of the current characters Bert would provide an Ode of the week I
suppose Cyril Fletcher style.

As the one who knows everything presumably Susan should be telling tales?

Lizzie did it I believe for a while.

Assuming he is not in any many stories at the moment then I would
propose Jim as narrator.

How hard would it be to slow down the recordings by just the right
amount to cover the shortfall?
I bet no-one would even notice.
You just need more of 'Barwick Green' front and back and perhaps a
little more ambient mooing.
Maybe they will give us back the doom music!!
This could be the moment to bring back the Uncle Tom type narration that
preceded the Sunday omnibus many years ago. But use it every day as
padding. But who should have that role?
My choice would be the all-seeing eye of Joe Grundy, looking down on
Ambridge from the great cider shed in the sky.
Not Nelson Gabriel then, wryly commenting from behind the bar?
R
Of the current characters Bert would provide an Ode of the week I
suppose Cyril Fletcher style.
As the one who knows everything presumably Susan should be telling tales?
Lizzie did it I believe for a while.
Assuming he is not in any many stories at the moment then I would
propose Jim as narrator.
Ghost writing the other actors parts?

Kenton's going to have time on his hands. Though for symmetry, since Tom
was Dan's brother-in-law perhaps it should be Alastair or Jolene.

Ray and I used to listen regularly - hence the recordings (radio takes up
little space on the recorder) - always an interesting mix of music amongst
the other stuff.

The BBC has said that TA will not be broadcast on Fridays for the
foreseeable to eke out the remaining episodes.  I don't know why
Friday and
not Sunday which would have made more sense to me.
Answers to all these and more important and probing questions will be
covered in Friday’s TA .... oh, err...
Mike?
How hard would it be to slow down the recordings by just the right
amount to cover the shortfall?
I bet no-one would even notice.
VLC Media Player (other processing software is available) will slow
down or speed up a recording whilst automatically maintaining the
original pitch unless you go into the preferences menu and change it.

I presume that, initially at least, the episodes will be
broadcast as originally edited, so Fridays will slowly move
through the week. I guess Easter is near enough to get by with
some minor edits.

Longer term they will have to re-jig everything. Who knows how
much they will manage to mirror life outside The Shire, or if
they will even be able to keep going?

The cliffhanger will presumably change one day each week which could be
confusing, but, yes the Omnibus will be shorter. I don't think Easter will
come at Christmas but by my reckoning Christmas may well come at Easter.

6 x 12.5 = 75

they only lose 15 minutes of airtime.
The cliffhanger will presumably change one day each week which could be
confusing, but, yes the Omnibus will be shorter. I don't think Easter will
come at Christmas but by my reckoning Christmas may well come at Easter.
HTH.
Why will the moni be shorter?
omni?
yes thanks. I do that a lot, transpose as touch type and wrong hand
goes first.

6 x 12.5 = 75
5 x 12.5 = 62.5
They will have to go back to editing a little out to make it fit into
the hour, as they did before the Sunday episode was introduced.
Thanks.

I know you are joking, but ....

We don't know how many weeks worth of programmes we have waiting for
broadcast. We do know that they make 6 weeks at a time, but how far in
advance of when they are broadcast is this done? A batch of programmes
could be made in the week before the first of them is broadcast, or they
could make them months in advance, so that they have several batches of
programmes waiting to go.

My guess is that there might be about 10 weeks worth of programmes
waiting, that is 60 programmes. If these are aired at a rate of 5 per
week, that would last 12 weeks, so to about June. They could reduce to
three or four episodes per week, but I can't really see them lasting
into Autumn, let alone up until Christmas, not unless they have a much
larger stock than I imagine. If we are still in this situation at the
end of the year, we will surely be down to no new episodes per week by then.

Assuming that this isn't the end of The Archers, they will have to start
making them again at some point, and at that point they can just start
with an episode suitable to the date on which they expect to broadcast
it, just glossing over any peculiarities in when, say, a crop was planted.

Depending on the story for the next two or three weeks, it might still
be possible to air the Easter episodes on roughly the right date, moving
some fairly stand alone episodes/scenes from before Easter to after Easter.

Having written all of that, I have just sought out further details of
this announcement and see that the new schedule is expected to last
until the end of April. That is 6 weeks, which will require 30
programmes. That number of programmes would normally have been aired
over 5 weeks.

Well, no, but it could recommence with daily or weekly characters
relating what's been happening. Say, on a day when 7 characters
normally interract, Character 1 tells what's been going on in Ambridge.
With "I heard"s or "Jennifer said"s. You could have two characters per
day because one could say they had heard something-or-other extra. If
well planned, weeks and weeks could be recorded in actors' own homes
this way.

To be honest after last night's episode I am not sure I care.
It was similar in unpleasant and nasty to the Rob episodes, when I
stopped listening. Since now we also have had a negative story for
Freddie, Ed, Josh, Neil (through Hannah) Elizabeth, Helen of course,
Kirsty shortly, Lynda and less farming detail I am not enjoying TA. I
had a bad night and while awake the scene inthe hospital came to my
mind.

I am not particularly distressed at the moment as life hasn't changed
as much for us as for many, but I'm obviously concerned about family.
I know the current stories were planned ages ago but whenever that was
there must be some people among the planners with worrying issues to
have loaded TA with so much negativity. I am feeling like not risking
listening again.

My understanding is that they moved from 4 week blocks to 5 week blocks
to save money, but not 6 week blocks. They recorded last week and would
have 2 - 3 weeks of the previous recordings in the can I would suggest.
So if the went to almost hand to mouth recording to play out then they
would need them in the studio in late April or a little later.

As Boris has said they will review matters in three weeks then it should
be possible.

After all recording The Archers is essential work.

Now, when I was at school I would really have approved of that. I
loathed Sundays because of all the god-bothering and always getting eggs
for breakfast, and I liked Fridays because if you could persuade them
that you were serious about playing golf you didn't have to go and play
lacrosse or hockey or tennis or cricket or fives or basketball or
netball on Fridays.
