Ok.

That makes it a bit less certain but....

Depending when the install of XP was done, ie if is an 'old' install and
has all the updates etc, from MS, then like some of yours probably have,
then it could well be expected to have the driver.

However, if it was installed 'recently' (which is why I asked if you did
it) it may not have all the updates and therefore some newer drivers may
be missing. If the supplier did a fresh install before sending it out,
chances are he couldn't do all the updates.

Your other machines, that you've had awhile, you kept current- at least
until support stopped and they have the driver you need.

The drivers for the other items that do work are either 'old' or
standard and in the original XP so they install OK.

Win 7, 10 etc are still current and either get regular updates and can
still download drivers from MS etc.

Does that make sense?

yes great thanks.....all the other s/h refurbished machines must have, as
you say must have had all the drivers for all my various dongles......I now
understand .....just thought this one might have had them too.....it came
with service pack 3 and it has done about 120 updates since I installed it
using the ethernet connection...OK won't worry about it then just thought
there might have been a setting to change couldn't find any....... I will
just use dongles that come with discs or that I know where to download
drivers from in future just for this machine......thanks

No problem.

The service packs are, or were, available either to download or on disks
so, if you have them, you can at least get a 'new' install up to that
level. The problem is other updates.

To be honest, I'm no sure if MS are actually doing any updates. I heard
they did do some after the 'end date' but, not using Windows XP anymore,
or even Windows, I haven't tried. Perhaps someone else who still uses
Windows XP knows.

For an 'old' HP machine, the onboard stuff should all be in XP, I'd be a
bit surprised if much wasn't- at least to get it working basically. I
have several old HP DC series machines I run Linux on, they are good
boxes. Only 'niggle' is that they don't use standard motherboards etc
so, you can't reuse major parts.

There's a registry hack which allows you to keep getting the updates for
XP embedded, which helps.

Unfortunately, stuff like Chrome, Firefox etc are dropping support now
too.

I still have an XP box to run something VERY old in a DOS mode, but it's
airgapped from the real internet.

From the point of view of its purpose, Stuxnet ( and its
derivatives) were really very clever. Right down to their ' self
destruct' feature which, perhaps, is indicative that the creators
were after limited targets.

Air gaps are far from the secure barrier to 'infection' some
believe. If anything, they can allow the unwary to neglect basic
security. Then, there are those who aren't up to date with
current OS disk encryption .

Stuxnet went after particular pieces of a firm's control software; it's
self-destruct feature wasn't linked to that restriction.

There's plenty of Class Bs about who never got up to date with CW
encryption. It's still the most popular mode on the HF bands.

It's not my imaginary hearing - it's listed in the paperwork you are
abjectly failing to beat me over the head with.

Isn't it amazing though that while you are attacking me on that basis

Almost as if you were working together.

this latest s/h windows xp professional hp desktop doesn't auto install any
of my various wi fi usb dongles that auto instal in all my other machines
... am I missing a setting to be changed?........ keyboard and mice plug and
play but not any wifi dongles...... I have had to install drivers off a
discs for my old belkin g to get on wi fi.......time for all you
professiopnals to have a laugh but I don't care.......
I'm still running XP on the shack computer (ancient skip-weaselled
Dell) with wifi . I just use it for logging and MGM modes.

It is a Belkin card and I had to download drivers as I got the card S/H
for a £1. Autoupdate rarely works on XP these days,if at all so you have
to do it the hard way.

There is an example of driver problems I've seen in Linux (NOT a
criticism of Linux).

I have a couple of old, cheap, webcams. I forget the make but they
always worked fine with Windows and even Mac.

Linux, not a hope. I found that they were both listed as not having
drivers / being supported. Probably the manufacturer hadn't released the
data so a driver could be written- a lot of drivers etc are developed by
volunteers but they need data.

No big deal, I have another camera which is supported etc but, someone
installing Linux for the first time, not knowing the ropes, etc would
just see his unsupported camera didn't work and blame Linux. Playing
devils advocate, I can see why but as a Linux fan, I find it annoying.

I know you don't want to get involved with Linux but it really is a good
way to reuse old hardware, which is always fun.

Depends what you want to do.

I still have a DOS machine I use for some legacy stuff. True, I can due
it under Linux (well in a DOS environment inside Linux) but the old
Amstrad laptop does the job when I need it to. Unless the hardware
fails, it should go for years. The data entry is never via media, no
network connection etc, just a keyboard. Not even a mouse.

You will hit problems like browser compatibility. Chrome 16 bit for
Linux has already been dropped as regards updates. If it hasn't happened
already, the older Windows versions can't be far behind. I expect other
browsers will be similar.

Hopefully your hardware won't fail or, at least, you can get s/h
replacements which are XP compatible, but newer stuff won't have drivers
etc.

Virus problems are, of course, a risk. Not using Windows I don't follow
the current trend in protection software but I'd be surprised if they
continue to support XP for much longer, assuming they still are.

I'm not trying to convince you that Win 10 is the way ahead, it is
terrible in my view. Ditto Win 8. I think you have Win 7 and you will
have your own views on it.

Like you, I quite liked XP- at least as far as Windows goes. I was
generally forced to use Windows for admin work while working- both
teaching and engineering- and used it at home in addition to Linux for
compatibility. Plus, the family used to use Windows, thankfully no
longer, and it made things easier to have Windows.

Of course, for 'every day use', Windows is generally fine. With the best
will in the world, it is relatively recently that Linux has become a
doddle to set up for those who don't know anything other than absolute
basics. Heresy to some but I say it as a firm Linux supporter. Part of
the problem can be issues with drivers which is more to do with 3rd
parties than any core Linux issue. MS have used their market position
and HW suppliers produce drivers or the data so MS can for Windows.
Linux doesn't always enjoy the same situation.

Apple, of course, control the HW and SW- one reason their things
integrate so well. In fact, boringly so at times if you like to tinker ;-)

Android, while good (I'm impressed with a new phone) suffers some of the
problems you see with Windows. The OS doesn't always work quite the same
with all HW. I'm seeing a problem like this which, looking around the
internet, seems quite common with the app in question. Fine on some
phones, not others, same version of Android etc.

16-bit browser for a 32 or 64 bit OS? I had a 16-bit Opera for Windows
3.11 that worked better than Netscape and IE.

Of course, silly error, I should have said 32 bit, but they did drop
support for 32 bit Linux some time back. I assume they've dropped, or
will some do so. for XP et al.

Opera was good, as you say. Not used it recently.

Netscape- that brings back memories.

I saw 3.11 somewhere recently- I suspect YouTube and GEM (the old
Amstrad version), again I think on YouTube. Very dated but both seemed
good at the time.

When you say 32-bit Chromium you more than likely mean i386-linux-gnu.
It's still very much alive for the 32-bit arm versions armv6l and armv7l
that I'm using. It's a bit slow on a Pi3 but quite useable on an Asus
Tinkerboard.

I was referring to Google's Chrome 32 bit (double check not 16 ;-) )
version. I'm aware of the Chromium browsers but don't follow them. As
I was referring to browsers Jim would be likely to use, I doubt he is
going to go far 'off piste'- he likes to stay in his comfort zone with

Latest Opera reputed to be 38% faster at page loading than the latest
Firefox versions 57+ which was much faster than the previous versions
of FF.

You could try Vivaldi, it's Opera based, but I have not tried to assess
it for page load speed.

Of course there are other considerations but suppressing delays due to
embedded links makes browsing more fluid.
