Discussion:
How do I copy my smartphone photos to my computer?
(too old to reply)

I have an android smartphone. I just got it and am trying to learn how
to use it. I added a micro SD card and connected that card t omy
computer to put some music and videos on it, before putting that card in
the phone.

So, I suppose I could put my photos on that card from the phone's camera
and move that card to my computer (with a micro SD adaptor to SD).

But isn't there an easier way to transfer photos?

There is no place to plug a Thumb drive into the phone. But I wonder if
using a cord from phone power jack to the computer's USB port will work?
I have not tried it, but I suspect that is only for charging the phone's
battery.

Someone told me I can bluetooth stuff like photos, but I dont have
bluetooth on my older XP computer, so that wont work.

What are my other options?

Thanks

For me, the easiest way turned out to be attaching them to emails that
I send to myself. I go to photos, find the "share" thing and send it
to my email.

to emails that I send to myself.
Might be easy, but it's also by far the worst method:
- Picture files can be very large.
- Lots of providers limit mail message size.
- Mail programs/apps [therefore] often reduce picture
size, and thus the quality.
- File transfers preserve the original size and quality.
WeTransfer and similar means are a lot better, but they
may reduce the total amount of data sent per session.

The socket you use to charge the Android is also (usually) used to
connect to other Devices (PC., etc)

The Cable supplied (assuming it is removable from the Power supply)
might be a Power-Only cable or it might be a Power+Data cable

If it is a Power+Data cable then (with a bit of luck), if when you
connect it between the Android and PC, you will get a new drive shown in
Windows Explorer with either a new Drive letter (or name).

If nothing happens when you connect the Android to the PC, then it may
be a Data only cable, or some settings may need to be adjusted in Android.

No, it will transfer too. In both directions. But you probably have
to change the option from mere charging to transferring. There is
probaboly a notification that comes up that if you click on will give
three choices, including files transfer and mms transfer, or soemthing
like that.

However there are easier ways than that even.

Someone told me I can bluetooth stuff like photos, but I dont have
bluetooth on my older XP computer, so that wont work.
You can buy a bluetooth transmitter for your XP computer for about $2,
$4 at the most. They are about the size of half a penny and they plug
into a USB jack. I don't remember if the bluetooth software is built
into XP or not. I'm sure you coudl find it online but buy a transmitter
with a little CD and that will have it (because that is the purpose of
the CD.)

But easier than all of this is MyPhoneExplorer, an app, half of which
goes on your phone and half on the computer. It will then connect and
format the connection via cable, bluetooth, or wifi, and it will show
the memory of your phone as if it it were an external harddrive.

You can find many of your pictures under DSIM (there may be two of
those, I forget. One wiill have pictures, and there may be pictures
elsewhere too, under the camera. Plus you can copy, save on the PC,
restore, move to the next phone your contact list, and just about
everything else. And it's free, but it's so good I gave him some
money.

This also means instead of typing into your little phone with the funny
keyboard, you can type your contacts etc. into the full-size keyboard
and it will go to the phone.

Also, when I wanted to send a long text, I typed it on the computer and
pasted into this program and sent it. It got broken up into several
texts automatically, at least I didn't do it.

This program does so many things I can't list them all.

goes on your phone and half on the computer. It will then connect and

the memory of your phone as if it it were an external harddrive.
By which I mean you can just drag and drop pictures etc. from the phone
using MyPhoneExplorer like a file manager, to another file manager which
has your C: drive. Or the other direction.

There is also a Sync files button and a Sync Photos button, but if you
havent' thought about it before, the meaning of Sync is pretty
complicated. Make sure you're not syncing a larger sett of files with a
smaller set, by deleting some of hte larger set. MyPhoneExlorer goes
into this in detail, but I apparently don't understand it becuase it
seems like it is wrong. I just copy from the phone to the PC; I
havent' had nevve enough to sync yet.

You can customize your syncing, but if you don't, this is what syncing
in both directions will do:
Files will be updated based on modified time
New files from the computer will be transferred to the phone.
New files from the phone will be transferred to the computer.
Deleted files on the computer will be deleted in the phone. ***
Deleted files in the phone will be deleted on the computer.

[The rules for just one direction are IMO even more complicated!]

Wrong settings in this window can lead to data loss on your computer and
on your phone. Please take care.

***How does it know what is deleted? And what if it was deleted on the
computer, but then copied from the phone to the computer, and then will
it be deleted because it's listed as a deleted file?

This is why I only copy from one place to another. That works fine with
this app, but since I havent' deleted anything fom the phone, I have to
avoid duplicates from last time myself.

It's DCIM, and it's parallel to the Screenshot folder. Also thumbnails,
and I have plenty of those for some reason. Just look around and
you'll be amazed at one you can see.

Yesterday on the People's Court, another person said he didn't have the
texts because he got a new phone. She said, My litigants change phones
like I change underwear. And she always suspects the texts would make
the person look bad so that's why he doesn't have them, but with this
program you can upload them from your departing phone and then download
them to your new phone. At least probably. Frankly if I had a lawsuit
pending, I'd save the whole old phone.

This doesn't seem to find whatsapp via Conversations, but it probably
finds it under Files.

LAN access from Windows to Android & back is very easy. One step.

All you do is start any FTP server on Android.

Then windows connects directly to the Android filesys.

The Android filesys looks exactly like a Windows filesys at that point.

The FTP server is already running, so that's zero steps on Android since
the FTP server running is a setting which survives rebooting the phone.

So the FTP server is always running. It's zero steps on Android.

On Windows, you simply doubleclick on the connection.

Once you do that, the Android filesys is available to Windows.
It's bidirectional also.

It doesn't get easier than that.
You can automate the copying on the Desktop if you want.

Then it's even fewer than zero steps. :)

Point is - it's so easy that it's no more steps than doubleclicking on the
established filesys connection for bidirectional access to both the
computer and the phone.

This doubleclick access bidirectionally not just the pictures but all
filesys areas accessible on the phone that the phone user can access
(whether he is root or user level).

Everything I said is correct that the FTP server is already running if you
want it to be already running, and the connection is already on the Windows

You don't seem to care to advise the op.

Mine does.
Which ftp server are you using?

Mine not only survives rebooting, but mine even connects to "the network"
when off "my" LAN, as I sometimes see an FTP domain that is from the
cellular provider's data network.

But isn't there an easier way to transfer photos?
Here's how I do it - sounds like a lot, but once you get the process down pat
it's just a few taps on the screen to transfer a photo:

- On your PC add Sharing to your photo folder - or whatever folder you
want to copy the pix to. I was going to try to list the steps in
detail for Windows 7, but it got too messy.... bottom line: figure
out to share that folder with anybody and everybody.

- On your smartphone
+ Install an app called X-Plore
+ (note that X-Plore has two screens and each can be pointed to a
different place)
+ On one screen, set up a shortcut to point to wherever your camera app
saves it's pics.
+ On the other screen, set up a shortcut to that photo folder
you shared on your windows PC
+ Tell X-Plore to sort files by "Newest First".

Now, when you want to transfer pics, all you need is:
+ To be within range of your home WiFi.
+ Aim one screen at the PC's photos folder
+ In the other screen open up your phone's photos
+ Select the photos you want to copy
+ Click "Copy" and they will be copied to the folder
that the other screen is pointing to (the PC's photos
folder)

NB: Once you get all the moving parts set up, you are down to
only two steps:
- Select the photos
- Click "Copy" (there is a "Move" option too).

Not simple to set up unless you're a techweenie, but well worth the learning
curve because it really does make the Copy/Move process trivial once you get
it working.

+ Install an app called X-Plore
I tried this to see how it works.
There's one hard step that I need to ask your help on.

X-plore File Manager
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore

I downloaded X-plore but was unhappy that it asked for:
- In-app purchases (that's ok)
- Identity (why?)
- Photos/Media/Files (that's ok)
- Wifi connection information (that's ok)

Then I shared a folder on Windows 10 for "Everyone".
I hit the three dots and then "Configuration" to sort by newest first.
I hit the three dots and then "switch pane" to switch between screens.

In one pane I went to /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera/
At top, in orange & red, I hit the icon & saved it as a bookmark.

Now what?
Post by (PeteCresswell)
+ On the other screen, set up a shortcut to that photo folder
you shared on your windows PC
I couldn't find the buttons in X-Plore to tell X-Plore on Android to find
the Windows shared folder.

Where are those buttons? What are they named?

What I see are buttons on the side of each pane for
- News
- Up dir
- Disk map
- Rename
- Copy
- Copy to clipboard
- Create zip
- Delete
- New folder
- Wifi server
- New text file
- Sort by
- Find
- Configuration
- Configure buttons
- History

But which X-Plore button connects to the Windows shared folder?

It's not what anybody would call "Intuitive" - and, in retrospect, I should
have addressed it.

- At the very bottom of a window's list of stuff to browse, locate
and click the "Show" item.

- Put a checkmark next to "LAN"

- Go back to the list and click the newly-added "LAN" item.

- At the very bottom of that list, click the "Add server" item.

- In the resulting dialog:

+ Make up something you like for "Label"
+ Enter the name of your PC as it appears on the LAN
+ Enter the path on the PC where the photos reside
in the form ShareName/FolderName
e.g. C_DRIVE/Photos
+ (you should be able to leave Username, Password,
and Domain blank if you shared the Photos folder
for "Everyone".
+ Cross your fingers and click "TEST". No News
is Good News in this case. i.e. it will only
throw a message if something is wrong, otherwise
you should be good to go.

That will work but bear in mind it only has two choices
- Option 1: Move files with your Google Account
- Option 2: Move files with a USB cable

The USB option works well but it skipped the WiFi option which also works
well. That means that article isn't good at all since wifi is pretty basic.

It also skipped the SMB option.

So that article will work. It just stinks as help unless you want to use

Hi,

This should be pretty simple. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 that I take pics
with all the time. I don't use an SD card; I just move or copy pics
directly to my computers.

I thought that maybe you were having troubles because you are using an XP
machine. I just tried this on my XP Home SP3 machine and it works just
fine.

I still use the original S3's charger, that is a two piece contraption.
Piece one is the charger that plugs into the wall outlet. Piece two is
the cable that plugs into the charger via a USB connection on one end, and
plugs into the phone's charging outlet via a smaller USB connection on the
other end. Usually, if this cable can be unconnected from the charger, it
is both a charging cable and a data transfer cable.

Anyway, I plug one end of the cable into a USB port on the XP machine, and
the other end into the charging port of my phone. XP will automatically
load any drivers if needed. A Windows screen should pop up on your pc and
ask what do you want to do with this device. The screen identifies the
device as a Samsung-SGH-I747 (it's an ATT phone).

I say I want to open the device to view the files.

File Explorer opens and shows "My Computer\Samsung-SGH-I747\Phone".

I click on (expand) the Phone folder, and further click on DCIM\, and
finally Camera, and there's all my pics. I can move or copy to my pc.

The path to all my pics is "My Computer\Samsung-SGH-I747\Phone\DCIM
\Camera.

Depending on your phone manufacturer, your method may vary somewhat, but
should be very similar.

By the way, I did not have to make any changes or adjustments to my
phone's settings to get this to work. The phone is just another hard
drive and shows up as such in File Explorer.

Hope this helps.

Several.

Load an app that runs an FTP server on the phone. Do this at home, so
that it connects to your router, while your computer is also connected
to same router. Then connect from computer to said FTP server.

Or connect an USB cable from phone to computer. Phone should offer to
use the cable only as charging cable as default, or optionally to
transfer files. Depends on particular phone and version. Once in this
mode, the computer should see the phone and offer connect to it, then
transfer files with the file browser.

Yes, there is. You need a small cable called OTP cable. One side has a
small plug that goes into the phone, the other is an USB female socked,
into which you can connect an USB stick.

But I wonder if
using a cord from phone power jack to the computer's USB port will work?
I have not tried it, but I suspect that is only for charging the phone's
battery.
Also for data, see above.

You can get an USB-BT dongle for the computer. Small as a thumbnail.

You presumably meant an 'OTG' (On The Go) cable!

In the past, not every phone could use one of these. I don't know if
that is still true, or if it was a new feature that would be installed
on all phones as time went on. And of course I don't know what phone
he has and he hasn't bothered to post back.

gsmarena.com says whether a phone can connect like this, and for my
phone the line looks like this: USB microUSB 2.0, USB On-The-Go .

I have a vague recollection that there is also another term used by
them for the same feature, but if it says nothing, it may well not work.
It didn't work on my earlier phone. Still the cable is so cheap it's
worth trying anyhow, and you can save the cable for the next phone.

And it must be OTG, not OTP, unless maybe in Spanish it's Pasar instead
of Go??? But then what would OT stand for?

You may also be able to connect a usb keyboard with it, and even an
external 3.5" drive, though I haven't tried those things with my new
phone.

DropBox is what I've used for ages! Installs on your phone and your PC,

That sounds simple, but I dont have WIFI at home. In fact I dont have
any (usable) internet at home. Where I live, there is no internet except
dialup. (Or extremely expensive satellite). I can use the dialup for
newsgroups and email, thats about all. I have to drive to town, (6
miles) to use a public WIFI. I already spend too much time at the fast
food restaurants and bars to do my internet stuff.

This is the entire reason I bought this phone. I have no other means of
getting the internet. Dragging my laptop around is a pain. It's heavy,
it could be stolen, and if it stays in my car in extreme heat or cold
weather, it can be damaged. Whereas this phone can stay in my pocket. I
actually borrowed an android tablet before this phone. The guy is a
friend and he told me to try it before I buy it. Once again, it was
large and clumbsy and had to stay in my car in weather extremes. It was
also 7 or 8 years old and the battery was weak, and did not seem
replacable. Plus the camera was ONLY for selfies. (I dont want selfies).
I gave it back to him.

I did however try a few other methods suggested on here.

-FIRST TRY-
The power cord that came with my phone plugs into the wall outlet via an
adapter with a USB plug. I plugged that USB into my XP computer and the
computer did recognize the phone, but wanted a driver. Since I dont have
the driver, XP wont load the phone as a drive. I dont know what driver
is needed. It says it will connect to the internet and automatically
download the driver, but that means I will have to take my laptop (XP)
to a WIFI spot and get the driver on that. But I cant get the driver on
my desktop computer.

-SECOND TRY-
Then I found one of them special cables to attach a flash drive to the
phone. (I generally have cables for darn near everything). I plugged in
a 16gb flash drive. I let the phone format the drive. It says the drive
is usable, but it does not show up anywhere as an actual drive. I even
copied some photos to it from my computer, it still dont show up.

-THIRD TRY-
I remembered that I once bought one of them bluetooth dongles so I could
transfer the contact list from my flip phone to my computer. I never was
able to do it, and had to retype all 200 some contacts into a new flip
phone.

So, I put that dongle into my XP computer. It popped up asking me for
the password of my phone. I turned on bluetooth on the phone and the
phone asked me for the password for the computer. NEITHER HAVE A
PASSWORD. Then it said both passwords must be the same. So I typed 1234
on both the phone and the computer. The computer seemed to acknowledge
the phone, but not the other way around.

I GIVE UP...... I'M TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT !!!!!

I guess I'll just take the back off the phone every so often, remove the
micro SD card, put it into a USB adapter that I have, and copy the
contents to my computer's drive. At least that works!

That's bad.

Still, you can have WiFi without a connection to Internet. However, it
is very possible that the Android phone refuses to connect to it because
it does not have Internet and you have to insist.

Perhaps you can get Internet in your area using a mobile phone. Some
people do that here, there are some providers that give you a router or
a dongle to connect to the computer and provide Internet. Say 1 gig per
month.

In the phone, it should appear under Settings, then perhaps "storage"
(I'm translating from my language).

You probably also need an application to move or copy files on the phone.

It is asking for the bluetooth password. Typically you type a new pin on
one of the devices, and then on the other device. Or one of the devices
prints a number, then you have to type that number on the other device.

That doesn't mean that you can transfer files; the device might get
connected as an audio device only, for instance.

Your phone should have a 'Files', 'File Manager' or similar app. That
app should show the flash drive. (Because you say "I let the phone
format the drive.", the phone apparently does have USB OTG (OnTheGo)
support and the cable and flash drive are apparently working with the
phone,)

2.1 Mbit/s
which is very, very slow. it acceptable for very small amounts of data
and certainly audio streaming, but that's about it.

typical real world speed for an 802.11ac link is around 500-800 mbit/s.

a file that would take 1 second to transfer over wifi would take
several minutes over bluetooth.

nowhere near as well integrated as wifi, but the main problem is the
speed of bluetooth, or lack thereof.

a photo is typically 5-10 megabytes, which will take in the 30 second
range over bluetooth, versus instant with wifi. it's too short to
measure. tap and it's done, or better yet, configure the phone to
wirelessly sync over wifi and you don't even need to tap.

the original poster has an sd card he wants to copy, presumably with a
fair amount of content, much more than one single photo. sending that
over bluetooth would take a ridiculous amount of time.

Bluetooth works fine for me for single files.
It's just another way to do it which is how Android & Linux are.
You do it whatever way works for you and bluetooth is fine sometimes.
In fact, bluetooth is the only way in some cases as when you're not on the
network and you can then just do an ad hoc network.

But I'm not gonna argue it.
I'm just saying it's nice that we have the option of BT if we need it
because there are times when nothing else will work.

funny how he isn't in that position at all. he has an android phone
which has all three.

he chose to not activate cellular, leaving two choices: wifi and
bluetooth.

he could also use a usb cable and possibly even ethernet with an
adapter, although ethernet offers no benefit over simply using usb.

of all of the choices availble, bluetooth is the worst possible one.

I'm just saying it's nice that we have the option of BT if we need it
because there are times when nothing else will work.
smartphones have bluetooth, wifi and cellular. there is never a time
when *only* bluetooth will work.
And yet the OP is in exactly this position. Funny how the real world works,
isn't it?
funny how he isn't in that position at all. he has an android phone
which has all three.
He does not have cellular nor wifi at home. That leaves BT...

No wifi available. No where at home to connect the phone wifi to. That's
no wifi.

wifi can work directly between two devices, no access point needed, no
internet connection needed.

I dont use anything like that. Even if I had a usable internet
connection, I would not use "the cloud" or store my stuff on Google, or

I also do not use Facebook, twitter or any of that. Not only because I
have more to do with my time than read garbage gossip, but because I
refuse to sign up for any services where I become "the product".

Yea, the newsgroups are filled with a lot of garbage too, but at least
they can easily be filtered, a person can remain anonymous, and no one

Skilled PC users have little need for the cloud or any other online
storage. Maybe some need, but we can easily avoid it like the poster
explained. Apparently online storage is significant for smartphone
only users of which apparently there are jillions. If I were confined
to a smartphone, I definitely see good use for online storage. But I
suspect technology improvements will help alleviate that, at least for
those of us who are technically inclined.

Only the unskilled user is forced to put his private data on the cloud.
More to the point:
a. *Only a moron uses the iTunes abomination.*
b. *Only a moron uses the cloud for private data.*

The skilled user simple copies the entire visible file system of whatever
device he has on the network to wherever he wants to store it on his
network.

Easy peasy.
Completely unrestricted (you can copy anything you want).
Fast.
Safe.
Private.
Free.
Huge amounts (we're talking terabytes, if that's what you want.)

Only a moron "rents" his terabytes off the cloud for his private data.
Only a moron accepts the Orwellian restrictions of an iTunes abomination.

For example, the skilled user plugs in five iPods from five different
owners into five different computers and copies any song from any one of
those devices or computers to each other - completely unrestricted.

The unskilled user can't even come close to that power.

HINT: If iTunes exists on their desktops, they're unskilled users for sure!

The intelligent user simply connects his mobile device to his network and
copies anything he wants from anywhere he wants to anywhere else.

Fast.
Free.
Easy.

Just connect - and copy.

For example, this thread shows how I plugged in my iOS device (containing
over 100GB of files) to my desktop for quick, easy, free, and full
unrestricted access to all three visible file systems *simultaneously*.

Yes. That means with only two devices, I had simultaneous access to the
entire visible file system of Windows, Linux, and iOS ... for free ...over
USB cable... with ZERO software added that wasn't already installed during
the initial OS installation process.
How to read/write access iOS file systems on Ubuntu/Windows over USB cable
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.os.linux/z_KXY4IHLe0>

You vehemently complained about that method. Why? Becuase it didn't use
iTunes perhaps? Because it was completely unrestricted perhaps? Because it
required zero payware perhaps? Because it was just too easy perhaps?
Because it was too fast perhaps?

I'm not sure - but you vehemently complained about something that is as
simple as plugging in the device to my desktop and instantly gaining full
*simultaneous* access to the full visible file system of Windows, Linux,
and iOS.

You also complained many times in the past that you didn't like that the
SharePod (the older version) allowed ANY iPod to be connected to ANY
Windows desktop (any number of iPods in fact) owned by ANY user where we
could copy ANY file on that iPor or desktop to and from that iPod sans any
restrictions whatsoever.

You vehemently complained that this unrestricted method wasn't "the iTunes
way" of doing things. *Your Orwellian approach is that of the moron.*

What's amazing is that you think plugging in a device and then being able
to manage anything you want is 'too complicated' (which you say all the
time).

Only a moron thinks like you do, nospam.
And Joerg Lorenz is your counterpart in your moronic thought processes.

On Android, it's *even simpler* than I described above for iOS.

You hate simplicity.
You hate free solutions.
You hate unrestricted access to your files.

You & Joerg love the Orwellian restricted approach of the cloud & iTunes.

With an iPad, is there a way of accessing the photos (DCIM folder) on the
internal or SD card memory by USB, so as to copy them onto a Windows
computer for safe keeping, as there is with an Android phone or other
camera?

When I plugged my wife's iPad into my Windows laptop, only a few folders
were visible (I forget which) and DCIM was not among them. When I tried to
access the iPad from iTunes on the laptop, it gave a non-specific error of
the form "An error has occurred" (nice and useful!) and did not see the iPad
as a device that iTunes could communicate with.

Why do Apple have to make things so difficult? I know the "modern" way is to
transfer everything by wifi, and maybe via cloud storage, but there are
times when you don't have a network to be able to do that, and a direct USB
connection is the only way in that circumstance.

plug it into a computer. done.

all ios devices show up as a standard digital camera, and you can use
whatever software you want to copy them.

it's also off topic for this group. try the ipad group.

My impression is that the respective paradigms for IOS and Android favor
different extremes of controllability/customizability vs
simplicity/foolproof-ness/appliance-like operation.

simply export the playlists, which for smart (dynamic) playlists will
be a snapshot of the moment you do the export, then do whatever you

The point of never installing the iTunes abomination on any system, is that
we already have full read/write access to the visible file systems of all
our iOS and Android devices without the Orwellian restricted iTunes
abomination.

We just proved elsewhere, for example, *simultaneous* unrestricted access
to the entire visible file system of iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux,
without needing to load *any* software whatsoever on the desktop over what
is normally installed during installation time.
How to read/write access iOS file systems on Ubuntu/Windows over USB cable
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/misc.phone.mobile.iphone/IFC52JXBQ1c>

Try *that* with the Orwellian restricted iTunes abomination!

More to your point about iPods, you *never* needed iTunes to copy any songs
from any iPod to any other iPod on any Windows system (note that means you
don't need to even know what the AppleID is, since it's not needed).

I haven't played with my iPods for years (ever since smart phones came
out), but for your enlightenment, I dug up these pictures I posted in the
early days of Windows 10 in one of my thousands of tutorials on the net to
edify people of the unrestricted access they had to the entire iPod song
(and movie) database.
1. This is the version of SharePod that I used on Windows 10:
<Loading Image...>
2. The SharePod interface gives you unrestricted access to MP3 files:
<Loading Image...>
3. Here we batch copy (& rename) files from iPod to Windows 10:
<Loading Image...>
4. Resulting in an organized archive of all files on any number of iPods:
<Loading Image...>
5. Populate the iPod by syncing with any number of Windows MP3 files:
<Loading Image...>
6. If desired, the ID3 tags can all be batch organized to your liking:

7. With the result that you have unrestricted access to your iPod:

I have *plenty* of iPods, where I've been on record for *years* showing
people how to easily copy *anything* non-drm-protected from *anywhere*
(yes, anywhere) to and from the iPod, all without that iTunes abomination.

There are *zero* restrictions!
NOTE: I'm not talking about drm-restricted songs; I'm talking normal MP3s.

That means, literally, you can plug *any* iPod on the planet, to any
Windows desktop on the planet (even those where you can't install any
software on, such as at the local library), and copy any MP3 song or MP4
video back and forth between any Windows desktop and any iPod.

Currently using PowerAmp against an on-board copy of my iTunes Music folder,
but it's missing some obvious (to me, at least) functionality compared to
what I recollect of iTunes.
Years ago, when I first bought iPods, I had used iTunes also, until I
quickly realized what an utter restricted abomination the Orwellian iTunes
is, and then I found the completely free and completely unrestricted
solution (which I documented many times in the tribal record so you can
find it in the archives) that works perfectly for me.

As an example, you can go to the local library, and gather up as many iPods
as there are USB ports in the library desktop, where it's presumed you
can't install any software whatsoever on that library desktop (just to show
you how *easy* and *unrestricted* this method I documented is).

Guess what you can still do even under that software restriction?
Yup.

You can plug in, say, a half dozen of your friend's iPods (assuming the
library computer has a half dozen USB ports), and from the Windows desktop,
without installing any software on that desktop, you can copy any song from
any of the iPods over to any of the other iPods, sans any restrictions.

*Try that power & flexibility using the Orwellian iTunes abomination!* :)

Hi nospam,
a. You have zero helpful intent,
b. You have almost no technical knowledge
c. Hence you just guess.
(Where your accuracy is worse than that of the monkey.)

The *only* way you know to do anything is to do what Apple MARKETING tells
you to do, which is the most restricted Orwellian approach possible.
Why do the Apple Apologists deny facts & habitually fabricate imaginary content?
<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/misc.phone.mobile.iphone/eRTC23FyVDY/fDk0k8KAAwAJ>

Furthermore, you incessantly play silly word games, because I know you know
that the versions of SharePod I speak of work on *any* Windows computer on
the planet with any iPod on the planet, since there's no need to bother
with an Apple ID with the SharePod method and since the version 2.x and 3.x
SharePod software is executed off the iPod itself.

Besides, the library was just an example, where most users will have less
restricted computers such as their own Windows desktops, so you just latch
on to the example because you can't confront facts without playing your
silly worthless games that are unhelpful to the user - but where you always
defend Apple even when there is no defense for Apple.
What is wrong with the Apple Apologists that they deny even what Apple admitted?
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/misc.phone.mobile.iphone/fyL1cQUVCp0[1-25]>

If the library has net framework 3.5, you can use Sharepod 3.9.6 which
resides *on the iPod*, as you probably forgot long ago but which was
clearly explained in the tutorials.

Hence *nothing* is installed on the Windows computer. The SharePod
executable runs off the iPod, much like portable apps of today run off of
USB sticks.

If you use the older version 2.x Sharepod, which I also have archived, then
you don't even need Net Framework to be on the Windows computer.

These are facts.
I realize you hate facts, nospam, but (PeteCresswell) asked a question and
he deserves a factual answer that isn't filled with your wrong guesses.

These are facts.
I realize you hate facts, nospam, but (PeteCresswell) asked a question and
he deserves a factual answer that isn't filled with your wrong guesses.

and no, not *any* ipod.
You keep playing your silly elementary school games, nospam.

This is my last post to you in this thread nospam, because you prove, in

Years ago, when I first bought iPods, I had used iTunes also, until I
quickly realized what an utter restricted abomination the Orwellian iTunes
is, and then I found the completely free and completely unrestricted
solution (which I documented many times in the tribal record so you can
find it in the archives) that works perfectly for me.
BTW, before nospam claims his usual fabrications of imaginary iOS
functionality, you can't do this with the Orwellian iTunes abomination.

There is one caveat though, which is that you should have downloaded and
installed the free SharePod versions prior to version 3.9.6 when I posted
those helpful tutorials years ago, because, while SharePod version 3.9.6
still works today just fine, you'll have a devil of a time *finding* it on
the net nowadays.

Since I use SharePod 3.9.6 on my own computer (and not on the local library
computer - which just was an example to show you how unrestricted it is), I
can use the newer 3.x versions which went over a bit to the dark side by
requiring Net Framework on the local computer (the older 2.x versions
didn't require Net Framework so they worked fine without installing
*anything* on Windows (since SharePod itself, sits on the iPod file
system).

Again, you should have followed the tutorials at the time I wrote them,
because at some point, many years after SharePod was the generally
acknowledged best in class tool for copying MP3 files among iPods, they
went to the dark side so you're going to have to find the versions that I
use.

If you want, I can put my SharePod executable on the net for you to
download, but you should be able to find version 3.9.6 on the net if you
search for it (I'm not gonna run that search since I archive all my
software, whether it's Android or Windows).

NOTE: On Android, a tool that was great but also went over to the dark side
was ES File Explorer, for example, where it's always good to archive all
versions automatically, so that you can continue using the last known good
version. On Windows, a similar tool that was great that went over to the
dark side is Super, which is a video file converter.

As always, the rule is that when I write a tutorial, it's the best solution
possible, in terms of complete freedom of your files - so when you seem my
tutorials, it behooves you to pay attention. :)

Otherwise, you're stuck following nospam's recommendation to use the worst
method possible with the most restrictions and the least power and with
almost no flexibility.

Hi Pete Cresseell,

Since sharepod resides on the iPod itself, it's independent of Windows (so
to speak), since it acts as a "portable app" acts.

Given that I have a bunch of iPods, I just checked my iPod archives for
you, where any version you can locate on the net before 3.9.6 (i.e., 3.9.6
and older) works fine sans iTunes.

Any version on or after version 3.9.7 requires the iTunes abomination.
Any version older than version 2.x requires Net Framework 3.5.
<http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/0/f/60fc5854-3cb8-4892-b6db-bd4f42510f28/dotnetfx35.exe>
The executable resides on the iPod itself.

Workarounds are in progress but nothing is ready for this release.

SharePod 3.0.0.2 - 31st May 2007

* Actually fixed the application hang bug when copying tracks to iPod
* Added Multi-line grid row mode (cells wrap long content if necessary)

SharePod 3.0.0.1 - 29th May 2007

* Dragging tracks to a playlist preserves ordering and keeps current
selection
* Drop to Explorer now works properly and includes drop to Desktop
* Hopefully fixed application hanging when copying files problem
* Custom Copy to PC filename pattern now saved
* Minor changes

SharePod 3.0 - 18th May 2007

Major new feature list:
* iPod Shuffle support
* Video file import
* Play counts import
* Playlists and Ratings exported to iTunes
* Completely rewritten code to support adding/removing tracks and playlists from your iPod
* Multi-backup and restore system
* More track properties (Composer, Description etc.)
* Track tag editing
* Drag and Drop files straight from your iPod onto your computer (and
vice versa)
* Big speed improvements for loading & searching
* Written using .NET framework (better performance, Vista support and stability)

- To add tracks to a playlist, select 1 or more tracks, then drag-drop them
onto the playlist you want
to add them to. If they are already in the playlist they wont be added
twice.

- When copying to the iPod, each track is checked (Title, Artist, Album) to
see if it already exists. If it does, the track is not copied.

- SharePod now supports mp4/m4v files. Note the files you import must be
in the correct resolution/bitrate/etc for your iPod. SharePod doesnt
re-encode the video, it is assumed it is already fit for the iPod. A good
free encoder is Videora (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/)

- To export a playlist to iTunes, right-click on the playlist and select
'Copy To PC'. This will copy all the tracks in the playlist to your
computer and create an iTunes Import file to link those tracks to a
playlist.
Alternatively, if you copy the selected tracks in the normal way, SharePod
creates a default 'SharePod' playlist in iTunes.

- When using the Eject menu item, SharePod saves any outstanding changes,
sends the iPod its 'disconnect' command and exits. Sometimes Windows
displays an error message but this is safe to ignore.

I just plugged in an iPod into my latest Win10 system where the SharePod on
that iPod was version 3.9.4 and it worked just fine after I installed
Net Framework 3.5 onto that latest Windows 10 computer.

In a split second, I was able to copy all the songs off so I could safely
run tests on that iPod for you using newer available versions of SharePod
like this version 3.9.9 (which is after they incorporated iTunes).

That means, literally, you can plug *any* iPod on the planet, to any
Windows desktop on the planet (even those where you can't install any
software on, such as at the local library), and copy any MP3 song or MP4
video back and forth between any Windows desktop and any iPod.
Yeah, but you just said it: "Plug...Windows desktop"....

I think more in terms of WiFi connections to my LAN and going back-and-forth
between my phone and a NAS box.

There is no place to plug a Thumb drive into the phone. But I wonder if

No, you'll need a dedicated USB OTG cable to allow your phone to
recognize a USB flash drive.

If your unknown phone supports the USB OTG feature you could install a
file explorer app to browse and transfer files between your phone and
SD card, if the SD card is formatted as FAT or FAT32 (some apps
support NTFS). You'd just insert your SD card into a USB OTG SD card
reader. No computer needed for transferring. Both Windows and Android
can read FAT/FAT32 format media.

So, I suppose I could put my photos on that card from the phone's

But isn't there an easier way to transfer photos?

Yes, that will work. Have you not tried that yet? If that cord came
from the manufacturer, and it's detachable from the charger. it should
work fine.
