Great article. I had a patient who was an aging M.D. patient (early twenties) and was once a poster child for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, he could never get over what an ass Lewis was to him.

Look forward to other asshole stories. Bob Hope would be one.

That surprises me... I knew that Jerry was an asshole, but I always
thought that he took the MD kids seriously and treated them and their
families with respect.

I only know what I was told.

But, one thing that could bother these kids, who all die young, is that Jerry was always saying that the cure was right around the corner. And it hasn't. Forty-six years and more than $2.5 billion, they don't appear to be any closer. That would cause me to be angry.

From the OP article, Jerry seems missive; imagine his behavior with kids that are often difficult to understand.

I seem to remember that in the 1996 book "Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence" journalist John Hockenberry had some nasty things to say about Lewis as well.

I know somebody who worked on many of the MD telethons when Jerry was involved. He
always said Jerry was a total jerk to nearly everybody. He told how Jerry would be
well rested in his hotel room or his dressing room but would make himself look
disheveled and haggard before he came out at the end of the telethon, as if he'd been
working very hard and going without sleep. He had done neither.

After Lewis--and these allegations above are serious indeed--was dismissed by the MDA a couple years ago, he promised a news conference soon to tell his side. That presser was never held for some reason.

Anyone know if Lewis has since talked about what happened?

Thanks in advnace!

There's no doubt among some who were involved that Jerry's real reason for becoming
involved with the MDA telethon wasn't due to interest in the disease or concern for
those affected by it, but to try and prop up his faltering career. It kept his name
and face in the public eye when nothing else did. Those at MDA who worked with him
knew what an asshole he was, but the public evidently didn't and responded well to
his presence and seeming efforts. As the people originally involved retired or
otherwise left the organization, they were replaced by new heads who didn't see Jerry
as especially valuable. They definitely weren't willing to put up with all his crap.

My guess is Jerry's promise of a news conference was a face-saving gesture for the
moment. He was cut loose from MDA with thanks for his many years of participation.
There was no mention of all the negatives. But if he had chosen to have that news
conference and had fabricated a self-serving version of the situation, MDA likely
would have corrected things with the provable truth. Jerry, or at least his manager,
doubtless knew that and thought it best not to risk destroying whatever positive
reputation he might still have.

That's absurd. There were literally a thousand other stars of his
magnitude who would have been happy to associate themselves publicly
with such an organization and annual event. The idea that Jerry Lewis
was somehow personally essential is risible. Sure, he *became*
indelibly associated with it -- it probably helped that he sucked so
hard at everything else -- but that's just how it played out. Using
that as evidence of his indispensability is the very definition of
circular reasoning.

I remember seeing that as a kid. I didn't realize it at the time, but of
course, it was a put-on. You're hosting a TV show, you check your hair
before you step out, or someone checks it for you. If you go out with
messy hair, it's because you want people to see you with messy hair. Same
with the necktie where the knot is two inches too low. If it's really
bothering you, you take it off. Wearing it like that is an affectation, an
act.

Never give money to a man wearing a loosened necktie. That's my rule.

Anybody remember Doug Bady? He had MD, and used to be on the Howard Stern Show. On a New Years '94 event, Howard asked him what it was like to work w/ Jerry Lewis.

"Howard, Jerry Lewis can kiss my crippled ass. Fuck him! He's been doing that goddam telethon for 30 years, and we ain't seen dime one. Nothin'!"

This was in his obit in 1996:

"Born with muscular dystrophy, Bady made tabloid headlines in 1990 when he claimed that Jerry Lewis, host of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. telethon, became angry and attacked Bady in his wheelchair."

My favorite Bob Hope story came from one of his writers, that Bob's office was on the floor above the jokewriters, and Bob would fold their checks into paper airplanes and throw them down to the writers.

Also, I heard somewhere (I think it might have been from an interview with Ron Kovic of Born on the Fourth of July fame) that he attended one of Bob's Christmas show performances when he was over there, and Bob was mercilessly booed by the GI's. The NBC producers cut out the booing (I think Bob redubbed all his audio in the studio after he got back) and they spliced footage from other Christmas specials of the troops laughing at all of his stupid jokes in order to give the impression to America that it was hunky dory over there.

There is a good book on Bob Hope by Arthur Marx that details many of
those stories as well as his womanizing and stinginess.

At one time I did a play in which one of the lighting people had
worked in a Lake Tahoe night club that hired Bob Hope to do a one man
show. He said that even though the club was old and well established
that Hope stood in the wings until his manager called him to tell him
that the check had cleared. That he did not exchange pleasantries with
anyone who was working in the club and was in short one of the most
unpleasant people he ever met.

I've never heard that story before or any other instances where
Bob and his troop was booed.
He risked his life--once he missed getting hit by a bomb from
NVM by only a few minutes to go there with his cohorts to entertain the
draftees/enlisted men who fought for absolutely nothing (exc. for special
interests and profit-making by politically-connected men, ex, LBJ/Lady Bird)
over there.

I'm shocked to hear the Vietnam soldiers would boo him at all.
The soldiers should have booed the warmongers who got them into
that mess: LBJ and his Defense Department generals and other warhawks who
made gobs of money out of the hapless soldiers and taxpayers.

The Vietnam War wasn't popular with many of the US troops over there; to paraphrase Muhammad Ali, it was all about white men sending black men to go kill yellow men. To many of the drafted troops, Bob Hope was there as a de facto representative of the upper echelon of the US Government, as he was golfing buddies with the President along with the other Washington and Pentagon big wigs who sent them to fight over there.

LBJ played golf regularly? I don't recall him playing it as

And what about the enlisted men who weren't drafted? Did they

I had not heard / read of the booing before but two of my friends who served in Vietnam and saw Hope were non-plussed, primarily because they were ordered to attend on their down time.

OTOH, my ex-brother in law thoroughly enjoyed a Hope show but he was a Chaplain, not an infantryman.

wouldn't have entertained the troops if it had been a sacrifice for

Hope wrote an angry letter saying he'd been misquoted. The

No, really. I'm not being an asshole, either. It's just that basic
common sense should convince you that Hope never said that and there's
no source. I'm not the sort who is always hollering, "Prove it! Prove

those guys, the ones who had been around for a thousand years, they knew
EXACTLY what to say in front of a reporter but more importantly, what
not to say. It's the equivalent of walking up to your boss and saying
you hate him. Well, OK, maybe you do, but that $5000 check he throws at

going to say it. "Hi, my name is Bob Hope and I hate this USO shit".

Again:

1. Interview was published

2. Hope protested

3. Magazine/author said it was on tape

4. Hope shut up

5. Terry Ellsworth thinks it never happened

3, 4 and 5 seal the deal for me.

No one is claiming he said that. The claim is that he said he
wouldn't have done it had it been a sacrifice, which (and maybe I'm a
heartless bastard) I don't find particularly offensive or surprising.
I don't remember it jumping out at me in the interview--which I'm sure
I read at the time--I remember it only because of the post-publication
fuss. The wording probably also seems much worse on the printed page
than it would have in conversation.

I give money to charities, but I doubt I would if it felt like a
"sacrifice".

You know actors? Yeah, right, there's a credible source. Refusing to suffer fools lightly doesn't make you a jerk. But being an anonymous asshole on the Internet spreading stories for which you have no back-up does.

Look forward to other asshole stories. Bob Hope would be one.
Also, I heard somewhere (I think it might have been from an interview
with Ron Kovic of Born on the Fourth of July fame) that he attended one
of Bob's Christmas show performances when he was over there, and Bob was
mercilessly booed by the GI's.
The NBC producers cut out the booing (I think Bob redubbed all his audio
in the studio after he got back) and they spliced footage from other
Christmas specials of the troops laughing at all of his stupid jokes in
order to give the impression to America that it was hunky dory over
there.
Where there's war, there's Hope!
I've spoken to actors who have told me what some of these celebs are
really like when they aren't on camera. It's surprising how many of these
"beloved" stars are total jerks in real life.
Bob Hope.
Jerry Lewis.
Bing Crosby.
Johnny Carson.
Lucille Ball.
Lucy was a tough, old bird to some people, esp. when working with
her on-set, but she wasn't a total jerk off-set.
Jerry undoubtedly is, and so was Johnny to most people except to
his good friends.
Don't know enough about Bing and Bob to verify.

Google is a wonderful tool. When you have 8 members of a family and 6 say one thing and 2 say another - after failed careers and needing money -- do the math.

It's like the made up Jeff Chandler story by that cunt Esther Williams. Anything for a buck. Nothing sells like peddling dirt on a dead movie star.

From what I was told by somebody who was backstage for some of her shows, you can add
Judy Garland to that list.

Then there are those on the other side of the coin. I've heard from several people
who met him that Red Skelton was genuinely nice. He apparently enjoyed entertaining
with jokes off stage as much as he did on, although his private "performances" were
far bluer.

Skelton allegedly used to throw unsafe for prime time material into
his dress rehearsals just to make the network execs/censors freak out.

Skelton became fairly bitter after CBS dumped him. It's something he never really got over. Even late in life when accepting awards he'd reference the CBS thing in a sad way. Felt bad for him because he was such a talent.

Article tells me less about Jerry Lewis than it does the author.

I think when you literally make shit up about people, you lose any credibility.

I am referring to the bit where she claimed that in the MDA reunion of Martin and Lewis, that Sinatra and Martin were "extremely" intoxicated on live television and that Lewis was possibly intoxicated. There is video proof out there that the trio were NOT drunk. The writer is a liar.

Every single thing that she claims Lewis said could be true, but she lost any credibility making up shit about dead and living public figures.

You certainly have a point here. Sinatra was a flaming drunk and
often went on stage while three sheets to the proverbial wind. (I
have heard a good first-hand story about this.) Dean Martin, though,
would *never* in a million years have gone on stage while intoxicated.
(Yes, kids, you read that right.)

(I haven't looked at that yet, but ...)

As regular readers of celebrity obits know, Dean Martin was *never*
drunk when "on." That drink glass he so insouciantly carried around
on stage? Usually apple juice, *occasionally* a very weak J&B and
soda, one of which would last him a whole evening. And not just on
stage -- he did the same thing at parties. He was an extremely
disciplined performer who took his business very seriously.

The "drunk" act was just that -- it was shtick, pure and simple.

It could have been ice tea with lemon.

Dean *might have* done it, but I believe he only acted that way
as part of his schtick to entice viewers who knew his drinking reputation.
And he might have had one drink just before going on stage to 'loosen up',
but that certainly doesn't make him a drunk.
Therefore, Sinatra was more of a risk of being DoS (drunk on
stage) than Martin.
I would gather that Joey Bishop and Sammy Davis Jr. (the other
Rat Pack gang) never appeared drunk on stage.
I wonder if Jerry Lewis ever appeared DoS, either when he was
with Dean (1947-56), or after.

Not so. Years ago, the wife and I saw his show in Vegas. Very
disappointing. He was so bombed that he could not finish a song. He not
only was drinking on stage, but was bumming drinks off of people in the
audience. I don't think they were drinking water.
I think Dean is a great performer, a great actor, and a terrific
naturally gifted singer. Unfortunately, we caught his show that was one
of his worst.

It's well documented that "Dean as a drunk" was a complete act. Anecdotal evidence from anonymous posters is about as reliable as information from the Malaysian govt.

What proof does JD have that Dean *never* appeared DoS,
not even once?
The burden of proof is on JD to somehow prove his
assertion.
It would be unusual for someone who made a career on
being a drinky guy to *never* actually be DoS.
Was JD at *every one* of Dean's performances over many
decades, or have a 100% honest reporter at them to verify Dino was never
tipsy when performing?

LOS ANGELES, May 9-- Dean Martin, the singer and entertainer, was arrested Saturday night in West Hollywood for investigation of drunken driving by California Highway Patrol officers, the sheriff's department said. Mr. Martin, who is 64 years old, was booked at the West Hollywood sheriff's station and later released on his own recognizance.

Was Dean Martin a drunk? It's all Hollywood, an illusion that may be true or not.

The better question; Did Martin make being alcoholic glamorous?
