Post by Big AlHere'sthequestiontoanswer.
Q:Doyouhaveabettersearchengineforthisgroup?
A:Ifyes,whatisit?(HINT:It'snotgoogle.)
And something like Thunderbird's search or quick filter isn't sufficient?
I usually can find things I need. Of course this particular solution
you can only search one newsgroup at a time.
I think most of you don't know what I'm talking about, since I know exactly
what you're asking, and it's not in the least what I'm talking about.
Let's assume we're all adults, which means you're not pulling my leg like
Frank and David always do. I think Char Jackson had a good point, which is
that pbbanter is a "web forum" that "sucks in Usenet posts".
Exactly!
That's exactly what we're looking for!
For example, if I wanted to know if anyone had ever posted to the Windows
XP newsgroup about topic X or topic Y or topic Z, I would simply go here:
http://tinyurl.com/microsoft-public-windowsxp-gen (30-character limit)
Which would take me here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
Where I could run a Usenet-only winxp-group-only search for topic X.
Please everyone, don't respond until you've *looked* at this URL!
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
What is that URL?
It's an archive of *all* the posts to that newsgroup.
(Yes, I know trolls like Frank Slootweg are prone to saying that you can
set the x-no-archive header bit to make the archive disappear after a few
days but let's not get silly here please.)
What else is that URL?
It's a search engine of just that newsgroup right?
Now, let's state the heavenly obvious fact that everyone knows that "search
engines" exist, just as google or bing or ask.com or DDG or epic, or
whatever. Duh. We all know that generic search engines exist.
And we know that specific search engines exist, e.g., for pictures like
tineye or images.google.com, or even groups.google.com, which is the main
point here.
Q: What is a *better* search engine for this newsgroup?
What is it?
If you don't have a better search engine, then you don't know the answer or
you don't understand the answer if you say "google" or one of the "general"
search engines.
There are two major requirements for a Usenet newsgroup search engine:
1. It must archive all the messages (silly semantics beside)
2. It must search *only* the newsgroup for message to the newsgroup.
If you know of a *better* one than pc banter for *this* newsgroup, then I'm
all ears, as is *everyone*; but I've asked the question before (and you can
search for that if you use the search engine you think is better).
To my knowledge, and I'm the guy who *created* all those tinyurl links by
the way, to my knowledge, there is no *other* search engine than pcbanter
for *this* newsgroup.
Q: Do you know of any other search engine for *this* newsgroup only?
a. It must have *all* the messages listed in some type of sensible order.
b. It must search *only* the newsgroup for content.
If you *understand* the question, and if nobody answers, then we know that
pcbanter is the *best* there is that fits that need.
