I'm a US Citizen, traveling for the first time out of the
country, to Spain, using my AT&T locked 3-year old iPhone 4s
with a micro-SIM card.

I don't want to pay for US data (which will cost too much),
so, I need some sort of dual-SIM or dual-phone unlocked
solution.

One idea, I guess, is to buy a dual-sim adapter for my
iPhone and then ask AT&T if they'll unlock my iPhone for me.

Another idea, I think, is to buy a cheap $30 Walmart unlocked
dumb phone, and put my USA SIM card in that phone, and then
get my AT&T iPhone 4s unlocked and then put the Spanish SIM
in that to get data & local phone.

Do you have better ideas?
Will AT&T unlock my iPhone 4s for free?
Do those dual-sim adapters work for the iPhone 4s?
Should I get a dual-sim unlocked Android phone?
Do I need to be a Spanish citizen to get a SIM card in Spain?
Do I need to worry about frequencies?

Note: I'm not technical, so the SIMPLEST solution is best.

I don't know the US carriers policy about unlocking phones; here they
unlock them once you have passed the compromise period, for a fee
between nothing and 10 euro.

Anyway, I dont think the dual sim adapter is a convenient accesory, as
all the units I have seen are "external"; I mean, you have a ribbon
cable coming out from the sim slot and the dual sim holder must be
glued to the back of the phone.

That is a good idea. You can get a pre-pay sim card and reload it if
you spend all the credit. This company has good fares and the best
signal coverage. Remember to specify that you need microsim size:

Another idea, if you don't need phone calls, just data, is having the
iphone with your AT&T card, disabling carrier data, and using wifi with
one of this devices and a local sim card:

Remember taht you will probably also pay (and a lot) for incoming calls
on your AT&T card!

Don't know, but goog luck!

Do those dual-sim adapters work for the iPhone 4s?
They do, but as I said before, they are a bit cumbersome.

No needed. For a pre-paid card you just need to identify yourself with
your passport when buying it.

Do I need to worry about frequencies?
Probably. And not only about frequencies but also about phone system.
There are two main systems; GSM and CDMA. In europe we use GSM; in USA
you use both. I'm not suer what AT&T uses, but you can check it:

Luckily, it seems that all 4s models are dual GSM/CDMA, so you should
have problems.

Get the unlock code from AT&T, then quit AT&T, sign up with T-Mobile Simple
Choice plan, and put a T-Mobile sim in your 4s.
