I was stopped by an idiot pig today for my MOT about to expire tomorrow. So, it's not illegal then is it? Plus, I got a new MOT a few days ago, but because the DVLA's system is so slow, it's not yet registered with the police. 5 or 10 minutes of my and their time wasted, then he says "please carry your certificate with you for the next week as our system doesn't show you have it yet". Yeah right. Their problem, I ain't doing their work for them. Way too much money going into the police force, clearly not enough real crimes to solve so they're now pestering motorists driving legally.

Just how old are you? And how old do you think police recruits are?

They're talking about needing a degree to join the police now. That's

Talking about, so not yet. The police I've spoken to that have stopped me are certainly not intelligent enough to have a degree.

I asked one of them why he'd stopped me only 2 weeks after the last random safety check, and asked if there was a shortage of real crimes to solve. He actually said "we're not qualified to solve real crimes".

I asked one of them why he'd stopped me only 2 weeks after the last random safety check, and asked if there was a shortage of real crimes to solve. He actually said "we're not qualified to solve real crimes".
It's the detectives who do that.
Police should only be solving real crimes.
Part of their job is to *prevent* real crimes from happening. Another
part is to catch stupid/careless drivers.
All those need intelligence. Otherwise you just get stupid traffic pigs doing you for things aren't dangerous at all, like your numberplate being the wrong font.
That's an offence. Doing 120 mph on an empty motorway is also an
offence. It doesn't have to be dangerous. It just has to be against
the law.
That's my fucking point you idiot. There is no point whatsoever for doing someone for something which causes no harm.
Of course there fucking is, you moron. The alternative is chaos and
anarchy....no rules, no regulations, and everyone does what they want.

I'm not an innocent motorist. But they hardly ever catch me for the
infringements, it's a fairly simple exercise to evade the traffic
police. What do you need to join the force, two O levels?
Just how old are you?
43.
Post by Norman Wells
And how old do you think police recruits are?
When I was 20, they were taking 16 year olds out of school.
Post by Norman Wells
They're talking about needing a degree to join the police now. That's
probably the same as two O-levels used to be, but you have to try to
keep up.

So, your objective is to evade ANPR.
Thought so.
I've never even had an unusual number plate. But I have no objection to
anyone else doing so, in fact I don't think we should even have
numberplates. Why the fuck should the government watch our every move?
ANPR is actually convenient and useful.
If you're old enough to remember toll booths at the Dartford crossing,
you'd appreciate that.
The one the police stop you for is the one to steal tax from you.

I wasn't talking about a voluntary tax, I was talking about the road tax which ANPR enforces. A completely stupid tax which should be included in the fuel duty, so you pay as you use the road.

Fines for not having 'road tax' are themselves a voluntary (aka
stupidity) tax. You can avoid them very easily by getting your vehicle
taxed.

But if you don't pay it, I have to pay it for you, and I don't want to.

OK. Laws can't make you conform with them. As long as you're prepared
to face the consequnces, you're perfectly free to break them. It's all
part of being grown-up.

And if you pay more in fines than you would in 'road tax', that suits me
just fine because I then don't have to pay quite as much.

But road tax is paid equally by all. Why should an old lady who drives 500 miles a year in a Nissan Micra pay the same as Mr Smith in a 4x4 Range Rover doing 30,000 miles a year? Mr Smith is using more fuel, causing more pollution, and wearing out the roads quicker. He should pay more. Put it all on fuel duty, it's the only fair way - pay as you use it. Anything else is left wing nonsense.

Have you ever thought people might just want to be individuals? I know 6 people who have such plates, they all did it to style their cars, not to avoid ANPR. They all have valid tax MOT and insurance. And no, none of them is me.

No, no cars are 'changed'. All number plates as originally supplied are
standardised and comply with the law, so too are all legitimate
replacements. The only ones that are changed are by those who think
they're clever and, probably erroneously, in the belief that they can
escape detection by ANPR.

Rather stupidly, they flag theselves up too, like someone who has DAVE

all they use it for is to make sure we've all paid their thieving car
tax bribe.
And getting you out of car parks and congestion zones having paid the
right amount, and getting you through the Dartford toll with the minimum
of fuss and delay, and discouraging you from running certain red lights,
and ensuring that you've paid your vehicle excise duty, got an MOT and
got insurance. I think it's quite good that it makes you conform with
reasonable requirements like those. Otherwise, the cost is likely to
fall on me, and I don't like that at all.

If the price to pay for all those things is you having to have number
plates in a certain font, I'm quite happy to suffer the awful knock-on
inconvenience of that.

No, it's fine as it is.
It's not fine to expect millions of motorists to use a certain font just

They're talking about needing a degree to join the police now.  That's
probably the same as two O-levels used to be, but you have to try to

Talking about, so not yet.  The police I've spoken to that have stopped
me are certainly not intelligent enough to have a degree.
I asked one of them why he'd stopped me only 2 weeks after the last

I've found it's the best way to get let off with something, amuse them. Failing that, distract them with another problem. I was once pulled over for doing 95 on a motorway, but ended up with a pink slip to get tyres and handbrake and exhaust fixed, which I was going to get done in a month's time for the MOT anyway. So it cost me nothing.

Some of them do a few spot checks whenever they pull someone over.

I'm not an innocent motorist. But they hardly ever catch me for the
infringements, it's a fairly simple exercise to evade the traffic
police. What do you need to join the force, two O levels?
Just how old are you?

And how old do you think police recruits are?
When I was 20, they were taking 16 year olds out of school.

That's
probably the same as two O-levels used to be, but you have to try to
keep up.
Talking about, so not yet. The police I've spoken to that have stopped
me are certainly not intelligent enough to have a degree.
I asked one of them why he'd stopped me only 2 weeks after the last
random safety check, and asked if there was a shortage of real crimes to
solve. He actually said "we're not qualified to solve real crimes".
They've got a sense of humour then. That's good.
