Looks like they've never faced each other before. Both tall players who can wallop the ball. This has potential for a really good match.

I have a hunch Osaka will squeak through.

Good call. Down two match points and apparently beaten, Osaka squeaked through. She is a tough customer late in a third set.

Yes, she raised her level impressively and followed through when she saw Muguruza getting shaky. Similar to what happened with Errani vs. Hsieh. Speaking of whom, it's a pleasant surprise to see her make the quarters for the first time at age 35.

Mugs has won 2 slams beating Serena & Venus in the finals, so she's used
to playing black power players.

Is Osaka thought of as a "Black Power" player now? ;)

don't you know, black power isn't needed anymore as oBiden has already solved all racism in the entire USA!!

Tennis is funny that way, in that you can have two champ-level players who have never played.

And given the result we can't say who has the upper hand, as close to a
draw as you can get in tennis.

I'm happy Osaka won as she's the most likely to beat Barty.

She won't get that far. Hsieh will beat her in the quarters!

Well, probably not. :) Squeaky has a 3-1 edge against her. However, all but one of those matches were three-setters. You never know. Hsieh was 0-3 against "rat-faced" Errani before beating her this week. And rats are tougher than mice, ergo...

I like Hsieh too. Osaki beat her here when she won AO in 2019 so knows
what to expect & should get her again with that experience. I really
don't want to see Barty win (fake niceness) and Osaka is best equipped
to put her out.

this mouse is one tough rodent. definitely the best player on tour if
she's on her game. of course she's yet to win a Wim or FO, and may be
a 1 surface player.

Tougher than all the Hemingway readers put together.

Dunno. The niceness factor is vomit inducing for me, especially when
it's overdone. I told my wife I've rooted against Barty in every match
she's ever played. She was appalled. I don't see why I should root for
Barty & Hewitt types just because they're Australians?

Barty can earn my respect by getting stuck in & winning a couple more
slams and getting a bit nastier. I won't hold my breath. She has a
cupcake draw & if she can't make final here she's a joke.

Looks that way. She quickly took advantage when Muguruza faltered and wouldn't give her an inch of breathing room. I expect she'll beat Hsieh in straight sets this time (unfortunately) because Squeaky is a more disciplined player than a couple of years ago. And even though Serena has beaten her in the last couple small events, I think an AO meeting would go much like the USO...minus the histrionics.

She should just stick to tennis, nod her head a lot, and smile at the press conferences. Fortunately for her she's a world-class athlete and doesn't have to do a doctoral dissertation.

She gets more than $1 million every week from endorsements and
apparently is considered an influential global superstar (news to me).
Tough to be grounded in that kind of environment.

My wife doesn't like her because she talks like a 13 yr old.

That was classic from Naomi. All kinds of theories abound, like she's a
bitch, intentionally funny, aspergers, didn't hear her etc

I think maybe aspergers?

the words "white bitch" don't fit in the narrative IMO. the narrative
is, "there are barriers that still need to be broken." she's been
warned by her handlers to not speak outside of that 1 sentence.
Agreed, it reeks of slick PR.

else."
