Have to admit, I did not realize this was the start of Euro qualifying. If I am not mistaken, the upcoming Euro is being hosted all over Europe and 56 countries qualify, so essentially all of them except for Scotland and San Marino.

Sorry Scottys, just saw the score vs Kazakhstan and was taken aback, only to be more surprised to see this was an actual qualifying match.

Kasachstan - Schottland 3:0 (2:0)
I thought this was supposed to be a good Scottish team

Zypern - San Marino 5:0 (4:0)

Niederlande - Weißrussland

Nordirland - Estland

Kroatien - Aserbaidschan

Slowakei - Ungarn

Österreich - Polen
Arnie starting for Austria, bit surprised the new wonder kid Chris Friday is not starting for Polski.

Israel - Slowenien

Nordmazedonien - Lettland

Belgien - Russland

Unlike Poland, we have no strikers. 84-year-old Marc Janko came off the
bench and missed a sitter to equalise a minute from time.

Israel next. Let's see if Agents Herzog and Ruttensteiner have done their
job.

OK, so based upon the matches I watched yesterday, I can safely say England will win Euro 2020 and Argentina will not. I know, it is a bold statement, but even with Messi back, the Argies will not win Euro 2020, bet the house on it if you like, that is how certain I am.

Further research has revealed only 12 countries will be hosting games for Euro 20 and only 24 countries participating, they may boost it up to 48, but I can not confirm that. I initially thought past winners were hosting, but if that is the case where is Yugoslavia? I can not believe Tito has not made more of an issue of the Yugos not hosting any matches!

Czechoslovakia won a Euro, not hosting either. England have never won a Euro and they are hosting half of the matches. France not hosting either, pretty sure it is a conspiracy against the French by Platini.

Baku is hosting games. Are they even part of Europe? How can you host games when all your pitches are flooded? Baku is below sea level for those who do not know, hence all the pitches being underwater.

Germany, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Russia all hosting and won Euros, so nothing wrong with that, satisfies my you have to have won to host theory, but Ireland, Scotland, England, Roumania and Hungaria are all hosting, how can that be? They never won a Euro as far as I know.

Oh and what is the deal with Brexit, have the Limeys solidified their hold on dumbest population in the western world? They have finally taken that crown from the Americans. Hmmm, I guess they will be winning two things over the coming years.

Kasachstan - Russland 0:4 (0:2)

Just when you thought Kazakhstan was going to win Euro 20, Russia come in and spoil everything

Wales - Slowakei 1:0 (1:0)
Non Colombian James scored his first goal for Wales. I was under the assumption all Welshman are named Jones or Williams.

Ungarn - Kroatien

Israel - Österreich
If Austria lose this they can kiss Euro 20 goodbye.

San Marino - Schottland
For Scottish fans visiting San Marino for the first time, the stadium is the big building on the right when you walk into the country, if you see a shopping centre, you have probably passed the stadium and are now in Italy.

I dont want to make fun at the expense of Scotland, but it would be amusing if San Marino get something from this match.

Niederlande - Deutschland
The mother of all European derbies, well maybe not anymore. If you offered JLow 0-0, I am pretty sure he would take it. I assume this new version of Germany is more about pace then the previous more skilled version. Really not a good team, then again, the Dutch have Ryan Babbel starting as striker.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what this new look German team is all about. It will probably be a big day for all teams who have lost or been eliminated by Germany previously-I am looking at you England- to have a laugh at the expense of what looks a weak team. Serge Gnarby, I will just leave it at that.

Nordirland - Weißrussland

Polen - Lettland

Slowenien - Nordmazedonien
There is a North Macedonia now?

Zypern - Belgien

There are in fact quite a few 30-31 year olds, then some youngsters, but a big hole in the middle.

In the meantime, 1-1 by Zehavi, then Austria with three huge chances in quick succession.

Set-piece defending has been ..erm...not exactly brilliant in this game. Or maybe the Austrian defenders were too concerned by the Moanes Dabour threat and left Zehavi alone?

Now they leave Zehavi with tons of time to take aim and shoot, and he obliges with a cracking shot in the top corner. 3-1 and a personal hat-trick for the ex-Palermo player.

Zehavi races clear again and sets up Dabour. He almost bungles the first attempt, but is able to get a shot off anyway, and then bundles in the rebound. 4-1

"Set-piece" was redundant in the above.

Sabitzer again with eons of time to shoot, Harrush deflects his shot onto the crossbar, and Arnautovic beats the cramping Taha to the rebound. 4-2

And that's the final score. Israel came close to making it 5-2 in the final minute: Zehavi hit the post, and Tomer Hemed put in the rebound but he was marginally offside.

Good result for Israel, but still a long way to go to Euro 2020.

No, since they actually DID qualify in 1970, and were also very close in
1974 (lost a match 1-0 to S. Korea in extra time, but it was a single
match and in Korea, which hardly seems fair (whole thing went on in S.
Korea as far as I can tell. There was a group stage, and Israel topped
the table for that - so why semifinals and a final were then required is
a mystery to me) . The Australians then beat S. Korea, but this was
tied after two legs, and required a playoff on neutral ground.

They also came relatively close in 1990 (lost the intercontinental playoff to Colombia, when they were representing Oceania) and in Euro 2000 (made the playoffs but got crushed by Denmark).

Then of course in 2002 they were seconds away from making the playoffs, but a last minute free-kick by Andy Herzog (their current coach) saw Austria through. You can read about that in Best of RSS.

In 2006, under Avraham Grant, they gave a very hard time to France, Switzerland and Ireland, but in the end fell short of the playoff on goal difference, despite going unbeaten the whole campaign.

Since then, it's been downhill.

I didn't watch the whole game but saw a brief period of it, in which a Hungarian player was going harmlessly away from the Croatian goal towards the sideline and Lovren needlessly fouled him and gave away a dangerous FK. This is the problem with Lovren and why many Liverpool fans still don't fully trust him. He will be having a fine game and then all of a sudden he'll lose his head and do something silly. He has a problem with concentration/composure and at 29 he's not going to lose it now.

No, not that one. It was in the second half. The FK didn't come to much so it was forgotten and won't make any highlight reels, but the foul was so unnecessary.

Schweiz - Dänemark 3:3 (1:0)
I tuned into this game in the 85 min and it was 3-1 for the Swiss and thought to myslef how the Danes have not been able to cope with the devastating loss of Nicky Bendtner, even at 3-2 I didnt think they were coping, but at the 93 min it was 3-3 and Nicky was forgotten.

That 3-0 lead for Switzerland was bullshit. There was a very obvious,
and *deliberate*, handball for the 1-0. Youssef Poulsen had his 1-1
called back for a marginal penalty.

Odd thing was that this felt like a 0-0 for most of the match.

Ok, no Scandinavian comeback here.
Well, Finland isn't a Scandinavian country, so that was to be
expected.

and the longest day one in Euro qualifying history finally ends. and it ends with the day of Scandinavian comebacks.
Schweiz - Dänemark 3:3 (1:0)
That 3-0 lead for Switzerland was bullshit. There was a very obvious,
and *deliberate*, handball for the 1-0. Youssef Poulsen had his 1-1
called back for a marginal penalty.
Odd thing was that this felt like a 0-0 for most of the match.

Norwegen - Schweden 3:3 (1:0)
Norway was leading 2-0 at the 70 the min. but the swedes came back
and stole the draw with 5 minutes to go, only for the Norwegians to
poach back the win in the 95 min only to have the Swedes pilfer the
draw in the 96 min
You have Sweden and Norway mixed up on the final two goals.

Those 5 are "Nordic." Scandinavia is only the first 3.

Sometimes, alkamista is right! :-)

By including Finland we get Fenno-Scandinavia.
