Galen Winsor is a nuclear physicist of renown who worked at, and

misunderstood issues of nuclear radiation. He shows that fear of
radiation has been exaggerated to scare people … so a few powerful
people can maintain total control of the world’s most valuable power

In the video, you can watch Galen lick a pile of highly radioactive
uranium off the palm of his hand and ignite a chunk of plutonium into
a shower of flaming dust. The guy also drank reactor cooling pool
water for fun and liked to go swimming in the pool to relax. He also
spiked the basement flooring of his own home with enough radioactive
material to send any Geiger counter reading off the scale to disprove
the fear mongering surrounding radon at the time.

Galen surmises the regulations and fear mongering that surround
radioactive materials are in place to prevent the widespread adoption
of nuclear power in local small scale neighborhood/home based
reactors. Galen also points out that hot nuclear “waste” can be
effectively turned into a safe power source through thermionic
conversion, which is how the U.S. submarine navigation network was
powered. The heat it gives off can also be used to safely heat homes.

He points out that nuclear “waste” is worth roughly $10 million (in
1986 dollars) a ton if it were to be reprocessed to collect its useful
isotopes, so all of this talk about trying to bury it is a sham. He
says the power companies are holding all the waste with the intent of
playing the plutonium futures market. The “waste” could be stored
above ground in already constructed buildings meeting all the
regulatory requirements without the need to have these outrageous
basalt mines dug into mountains. The only reason he can think of for
these underground vaults is to hide bodies/evidence that the state
doesn’t want uncovered.

At its core, he says federal controls over nuclear material is about
maintaining power and control over the masses through the denial of
self-sufficient power sources. Obviously if one had a personal sized
power source that was cheap and efficient, they wouldn’t need to be
connected to the “grid” for anything. The power grid is the control
grid our rulers use to keep us under their thumbs.

He also says Three Mile Island was an intentionally created disaster,
and that a core meltdown could not melt its way deep into the Earth.

rays. Betas can be effectively be stopped by two feet or less of
water. The water is distilled in rod storage pools and beta and gamma
irradiation does not screw up the water one little bit! The only thing
that would make that water unpotable is if the fuel rod had cracked
releasing raw fissile products into the water.

Most waste pools are 20 feet deep... so swimming on the surface would
be a fairly safe stunt. Even with the glowing stuff below.

Low quantities of urainium oxide is pretty harmless if unirradiated.

In the late 1970s at a Nevada air force base, a technician accidentally exposed airman Dan Hott to a great deal of radiation, perhaps the greatest amount ever any American has received.

Dan's wife, Angie, of Berkeley Springs, W. Va., said, "Dan was radiated in the head at a rate much higher than test animals have received. He said he felt the right side of his head behind the ear heat up.

The doctor (looking him over) said he didn't know what would happen to Dan over the years, but urged him to keep the documentation (about his exposure)."

Now fast forward to 2007, when Dan was experiencing a number of physical challenges. His left arm and legs were cramping up. He dragged his left leg, and often walked like he "had been drinking alcohol," said Angie.

He was experiencing fatigue and taking naps throughout the day.

Angie realized something was really wrong when her grandmother asked Dan to slice the Thanksgiving turkey and he physically couldn't with his left hand.

In June 2008, a neurologist diagnosed Dan with Parkinson's disease. Eventually, he became so affected he would lose his business, career, income level and more physical functioning.

The National Institutes of Health describes Parkinson's disease as a "movement disorder" causing limb and face trembling, limb and trunk stiffness, slow movement, and poor balance and coordination.

It can lead to trouble walking, talking, swallowing, speaking, and chewing.

Dan had been a successful, self-employed environmental engineer. In part, through his business, he designed remediation systems for gasoline stations that had spills.

Said Angie, "Dan's neurologist now thinks it's more than likely he ended up with Parkinson's disease because of having been exposed to the radiation." However, the Hotts have had trouble persuading the Veterans Administration, which has significantly limited Dan's benefits.

Angie has done lots of research on the connection between Parkinson's disease and radiation. For example, she discovered a Department of Defense study from the early 2000s in which the government radiated test animals to see whether they would acquire Parkinson's disease.

The amount of radiation, said Angie, was far less than the level to which Dan had been exposed.

Angie also spoke with a University of California scientist who believed no other living American had been exposed to radiation levels higher than Dan's.

Mae Keane, One Of The Last 'Radium Girls,' Dies At 107

Mae Keane was one of the last "radium girls," but not the last one. Please scroll down to the bottom of this page to see the full correction note.

Before turning the page on 2014, All Things Considered is paying tribute to some of the people who died this year whose stories you may not have heard -- including Mae Keane.
In the early 1920s, the hot new gadget was a wristwatch with a glow-in-the-dark dial.
"Made possible by the magic of radium!" bragged one advertisement.

And it did seem magical. Radium was the latest miracle substance -- an element that glowed and fizzed, which salesmen promised could extend people's lives, pump up their sex drive and make women more beautiful. Doctors used it to treat everything from colds to cancer.
In the 1920s, a young working-class woman could land a job working with the miracle substance. Radium wristwatches were manufactured right here in America, and the U.S. Radium Corp. was hiring dial people to paint the tiny numbers onto watch faces for about 5 cents a watch.
They became known as the radium girls.
To get the numbers small enough, new hires were taught to do something called "lip pointing." After painting each number, they were to put the tip of the paintbrush between their lips to sharpen it.
Twelve numbers per watch, upwards of 200 watches per day -- and with every digit, the girls swallowed a little bit of radium.
"Of course, no one thought it was dangerous in these first couple of years," explains Deborah Blum, author of The Poisoner's Handbook.

In 1924, a woman named Mae Keane was hired at a factory in Waterbury, Conn. Her first day, she remembers, she didn't like the taste of the radium paint. It was gritty.
"I wouldn't put the brush in my mouth," she recalled many years later.
After just a few days at the factory, the boss asked her if she'd like to quit, since she clearly didn't like the work. She gratefully agreed.
"I often wish I had met him after to thank him," Keane said, "because I would have been like the rest of them."
Other women weren't so lucky. By the mid-1920s, dial painters were falling ill by the dozens, afflicted with horrific diseases. The radium they had swallowed was eating their bones from the inside.
"There was one woman who the dentist went to pull a tooth and he pulled her entire jaw out when he did it," says Blum. "Their legs broke underneath them. Their spines collapsed."
Dozens of women died. At a factory in New Jersey, the women sued the U.S. Radium Corp. for poisoning and won. Many of them ended up using the money to pay for their own funerals.
In all, by 1927, more than 50 women had died as a direct result of radium paint poisoning.
But Keane was among the hundreds who survived. Over the years, she had some health problems -- bad teeth, migraines, two bouts with cancer.
There's no way to know if her time in the factory contributed.
"I was left with different things, but I lived through them. You just don't know what to blame," she said.
Keane died this year. At 107 years old, she was one of the last of the radium girls.
Blum says the radium girls had a profound impact on workplace regulations. By the time World War II came around, the federal government had set basic safety limits for handling radiation.
And, she says, there are still lessons to be learned about how we protect people who work with new, untested substances.
"We really don't want our factory workers to be the guinea pigs for discovery. 'Oops' is never good occupational health policy."

sixties. It's no big mystery but you can swim in a triga reactor pool
provided you don't dive. They run at low power usually..about 1 watt
to preserve the fuel rods. People have fallen in and survived with
little damage. If you look at any training reactor site you will find
rescue rings all over. Most triga reactor have pools that are in the
15 foot range at 1 watt the neutron range is low say 3 ft. .. four
feet max.
Spent rods about the same risk!
Most intact spent fuel rods emit mostly beta particles with some gamma
rays. Betas can be effectively be stopped by two feet or less of
water. The water is distilled in rod storage pools and beta and gamma
irradiation does not screw up the water one little bit! The only thing
that would make that water unpotable is if the fuel rod had cracked
releasing raw fissile products into the water.

Cancer is caused by exposure to radioactivity and radioactive elements are used to treat cancer. Get used to this World controversies! E.g. my relative was treated for prostate cancer by gamma ray which gave him the bladder cancer! Depleted uranium (DU) is a dense heavy metal used in military applications. During military conflicts, US military personnel have been wounded by DU shrapnel. The health effects of embedded DU are unknown. Published data from our laboratory demonstrated that DU exposure in vitro can transform immortalized human osteoblast cells (HOS) to the tumorigenic phenotype. Results from our laboratory have also shown that DU is genotoxic and mutagenic in cultured human cells. Internalized DU could be a carcinogenic risk and concurrent alpha particle and heavy metal toxic effects complicate this potential risk. Anecdotal reports have suggested that DU can cause leukemia. To better assess this risk, we have developed an in vivo leukemogenesis model. This model involves using murine hematopoietic cells (FDC-P1) that are dependent on stimulation by granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) or interleukin 3 (IL-3) and injected into mice to produce myeloid leukemia. One worker at Ibaraki facility found with up to 22,000 becquerels of plutonium in lungs

Five workers have suffered internal radiation exposure, with one found with up to 22,000 becquerels of plutonium in his lungs, following an inspection accident at a nuclear research facility in Ibaraki Prefecture on Tuesday, the operator of the facility said Wednesday.

In one of the worst accidents involving internal radiation exposure in Japan, up to 5,600 to 14,000 becquerels of plutonium 239 have been detected from the other three workers, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency said.

The accident occurred at the fuel research building of the agency's Oarai Research & Development Center when a bag covering a container for nuclear fuel materials, including powder samples of plutonium and uranium, tore during inspection.

A labor standards inspection office in Ibaraki conducted an inspection Tuesday and Wednesday at the building, while the Nuclear Regulation Authority, the nuclear safety watchdog, also dispatched an inspector to the scene to check whether there were any violations of safety regulations.

The agency estimates that the amount of radiation exposure of the man with the highest level translates to up to 12 sieverts over 50 years.

The labor office believes that the man in his 50s has exceeded the annual limit of radiation exposure of 0.1 sievert in five years set for those who handle radioactive materials.

Plutonium is known to emit alpha rays for a long period, damaging surrounding organs and tissues. If it is deposited into the lungs, it could increase the risk of developing cancer.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has said the operation by the workers was carried out as usual.

Nuclear Regulation Authority Chairman Shunichi Tanaka said of the incident at a press conference, "Perhaps (the workers) have become too accustomed to plutonium. I urge careful handling."

"As (a level for) internal radiation exposure it's an amount unheard of," he said.

"We shouldn't downplay the situation," said NRA Commissioner Nobuhiko Ban, a specialist in radiological protection.

While none of the workers has complained of health problems so far, an official of the facility operator said it "cannot rule out the possibility of future health effects."

The five workers have been transported to the National Institute of Radiological Sciences and given medication to facilitate the discharge of radioactive materials from their bodies.

Since radioactive materials were found on hands and faces of four of the five workers, they have been decontaminated, said an official of the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology, an umbrella organization of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences.

The workers wore masks to cover their mouths and noses but could have inhaled the radioactive materials from the small gaps between the masks and their faces.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has previously come under criticism for lacking safety awareness, following revelations of a massive number of equipment inspection failures at its Monju prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor in Fukui Prefecture.

The Japanese government decided to decommission Monju last year after it has barely operated over the past two decades despite its envisioned key role in the country's nuclear fuel recycling policy.
