Eudora works fine in Windows 10.

Apple has changed its operating system after the last release of the
Mac version of Eudora. That means that you cannot use Eudora on an
Apple computer.

Eudora works fine in Windows 10.
I find E crashes when I try to install it in 10. Any advice please?

I sorted it, just installed it all into one folder. Works fine then. Simples! :-)

NO Windows applications will run on an Apple Macintosh -- unless you
are running Windows itself inside a virtualization package (or maybe under
WINE).

The last version of Eudora for Mac is version 6.x -- I don't know if
that is even compatible with OS-X. Nor if registration codes are available
for it (whereas there are a number of valid codes available to unlock
Windows Eudora 7.1)

I just upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7. I have used Eudora 7.1.0.9. for years because of it's flexibility for my uses. I want to keep the app.

Here are some issues I have found:
Problems clicking links in emails - appears Win 10 is preventing links from working with none Microsoft browsers. Edge and IE work. Chrome and Firefox do not (when chosen as default

browser). I have to copy the link and paste it into Chrome.

Email attachment links will not open as they did in Win 7. I can get around this one if I right click open with and have the needed app in the list, but it's a hassle.

mailto: links work in Eudora.

Also all of the hyperlinks work in other apps like Office. In other words non Eudora apps are using the OS default for the operation.

I would sure like to know if others are having these issues and if there are any fixes

Thanks Paul for sharing this information. I am going from Windows XP to Windows 7 and want to install Eudora which I have been using since the beginning so it is great to hear that you have had it working well with that combination. I am sorry you are having trouble using it with 10. Hopefully someone else will now how to solve this.

I think that one problem people may be having is user data is in the program files folder. Windows 10 may not like that. But also, Windows 10 installation deleted the address of the file folder where I keep the Eudora data files (mailboxes, folders, .ini file, attachments.) from the shortcut which starts the program I had the data in a folder outside the program files folder -- in another drive, in fact. Once I restored the address in the shortcut to Eudora, it worked. The shortcut that works looks like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe" "d:\eudora_data\"

Should not have been needed -- unless you have misconfigured the
installation by having it store user data in the protected program files
directory.

The only other item is that, since Win7 changed registry locations for
some stuff, you have to turn OFF the option in Eudora that tries to set
itself as the system Email program (run ONCE as admin with that option ON
to create an initial registry entry, then turn the option off). You must
use the Win7/Win10 "set default programs" feature to define Eudora as the
email program to be used.

I've been using Eudora since Win95, through W98SE, WinXPpro, Win7Pro,
and now Win10Pro... And never need to run it in admin mode after the
initial configuration.

My Eudora still will open things in a browser. It is getting mailto: links in the browser to open an email in Eudora that doesn't work. Seems there is no way to get Windows to recognize Eudora as a proper email program.

Yes, that seems to be one of the "features" of Windows 10 updates.
It happens to quite a few people.
Quite a few? How do you know?
The Win update to 1803/17134.32 didn't affect my Eudore: clicking
a link in an e-mail starts my default browser as before. Whether
that's due to my browser being PaleMoon, not Chrome, I don't know.

And anyone have a solution?
Simple. Open Control Panel and reset the default program for your
browsing.
If that's the problem, clicking on .htm/.html files in the windows
manager wouldn't open (in) the browser either. Easily checked.

Well, today it works again -- clicking on a link in a Eudora email opens that link in Chrome browses.

Things I did since then:
- ran Windows Update again; it found a couple more patches that it downloaded & applied.
- re-booted my machine.
- re-did my default programs, to specify Eudora for email & Chrome for webpages (it said that those were the settings I already had, but I re-specified them anyway).
- re-booted my machine again.

I don't know which, if any, of those actions fixed it, but it now works again!

I expect it was the third step, setting your defaults.

When it isn't working, what does it do? Does it open a different browser or nothing at all?

When it didn't work, nothing happened. It did not open a webpage in Chrome (or any other browser), did not show an error message, just no response.

I fear that someday I may have to stop using Eudora, when an OS update makes it unworkable. What do I switch to then?
I'm leaning toward Thunderbird. I really would like to retain the 23 years (90,000 email messages that I have saved.

That can be done. Google to find and then install Thunderbird 31.6.0 with Eudora
still installed. That is the last version that enabled switchover from Eudora. When
it's installed, simply upgrade to the latest Thunderbird (currently 52.9.1). Once
you are sure everything you wanted to keep was saved, you can uninstall Eudora. It
worked great for me.

I tried it long ago. It was such a horrendous disaster that I gave up.
As of yet Eudora still works like a charm for me, under Win 7, 8, 10.
I do use Thunderbird too, but only for news. For mail it doesn't even
pass my man-or-boy test: the group or list syntax that was already
present in RFC822. Eudora handles that just fine. And Thunderbird
doesn't even come close to the configuration and parametrization
possibilities of Eudora, in particular by means of its .ini file(s).

It was an intensive process getting Thunderbird set up properly. But once I did, it
has been working quite satisfactorily. I do miss Eudora a bit, but not the problems
I had once I started using multiple Gmail addresses (problems were more extensive
than Stunnel could fix). Windows keeps moving on while Eudora stands still. It's
all too clear what that means for Eudora's future unless somebody steps in and
modernizes it.

BTW, I don't use Thunderbird for news, but Agent.

It wasn't/isn't just a matter of setting up. A basic problem of Thunderbird
as mail client is that it tries to combine the official RFC-defined Internet
world with Microsoft's self-invented world. Although it isn't self-invented
in the true sense of the word: MS failed to make the transition to Internet
mail and got stuck in the past. That was in the 80's when I used Unix with
(non-RFC-conformant) delivermail and switched to (RFC-conformant) sendmail.

You're lucky. I never got that far, and loosing 10 years or so of mail, and
in particular attachments, wasn't an option and thus a showstopper.

but not the problems

True. But as yet I don't see an equally flexible serious alternative.

Agreed. But I may not live long enough to see that happen. And with "happen"
I don't mean just modernization in the sense of alpha or beta versions, but
a truly usable modernized version. So as long as Eudora works I'll use it.

A situation where Eudora constantly and unstoppably keeps connecting
to the mailservers and trying to sync (IMAP) or fetch (POP) messages.
And if you close Eudora with its window's x, there's a fair chance
that Eudora crashes (which means having to remove OWNER.LOK before
you can start it again).
The workaround is simple: set File / Work offline before you close
Eudora and unset it after starting Eudora (again).

An odd thing of Eudora is that it connects to IMAP servers right
after you've started it, even if you've unchecked "Check Mail" for
all IMAP accounts. Don't know if it's related to the race condition.

A proper IMAP account has all your mailboxes on the server itself, not
local. IMAP clients may create copies of the contents for off-line work or
to save the download delay when one accesses a message, but technically the
local mailboxes need to be synchronized to the server. Every move you make
triggers an update to the server.

It may do so, yes, but I'm glad Eudora and my Android smartphone's mailer
do maintain copies. In particular the latter means I can read messages in
any place without having to be connected.

I was thinking it's a good thing I don't use gmail because of the issues people have with Eudora. But then I realized I DO use gmail. But I use it in combination with my own domain. Some time ago I started routing all my emails through gmail for the spam filtering. I let gmail forward the mail back to a common account in my domain that I use to pick up the email using Eudora.

If you have a domain you could try that. In your case you just set gmail to forward rather than using POP3 and pick it up from an email address at your domain or through the email provided by your ISP.

Rick, I don't know if you have heard of the Hermes team who are
working on a new version of Eudora. They have posted a new QCSSL.dll
that eliminates the need for manual approval for new certificates. I
have been using it for about 6 months and it works perfectly. You can
download it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hermesmail/

The install instructions are quite bad, but you will be fine if you
just copy and paste 4 files in the program directory (replacing them)
and run the vcredist.exe file to install the Microsoft Visual C++
Redistributble. If you have that file already the installer will say
so.
(To be safe make a backup copy of the program folder first).

Workaround? Stop using GMAIL... Or set up stunnel (which knows how to
handle new certificates -- but becomes the "server" Eudora connects to). Or
stop using Eudora (I've actually been using Pandora for nearly a year now
http://www.drivehq.com/web/brana/pandora.htm )

In lieu of that, the group that is trying to revive the Eudora source
code (as Hermes Messenger) has released a new set of SSL libraries that are
supposed to be drop in replacements. The new libraries are supposed to
understand the newer root certificate chains.

I've using Eudora (7.1.0.9 Sponsored) with Windows 10 (now version 1809) for several months now, with no serious problems. It seems to work fine.

I've had the problem that brought me here (clicking on a link in an email doesn't bring up that page in my browser (Chrome), nothing happens) re-occur 2 or 3 times since then. Seems to occur after a Windows 10 update.

The solution that works for me is just to go into Windows default programs and reset Eudora as the default email program. It will already show Eudora as the default; I set it to something else and then re-set it to Eudora. Then shutting down & re-starting Eudora and now it works. (Sometimes I have re-booted Windows in the meantime, but I'm not sure that is really necessary.)

I've never noticed the race condition that Piet mentioned. Nor do I have any problems with Server certificates.

Is anyone on this forum in the San Diego area? I need a person to come to my location. I need Eudora 7.1.0.9 installed on Windows 10. I have Eudora files, folders going back to late 1990’s. Too much history lose.
Thank you.

What prevents you from installing Eudora yourself? A Google search for
Eudora 7.1 should find an installer for 7.1.0.9 (ignore any 8.x -- that's
not really Eudora). Also grab the SSL library from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hermesmail/files/ to update the out-dated
Eudora SSL library.

Run the installer with an admin account ("for all users"), accepting
all the defaults (don't try to define special locations for program and
data). Extract/copy the SSL library update to the Eudora program (not data)
directory (Program Files (x86)\qualcomm\eudora... if on 64-bit; no (x86) if
on a 32-bit system)

Make a backup of you old data files (MBX/TOC, NNDB, INI, filters,
signatures, etc.).

Start Eudora from the plain shortcut that was created -- that should
initialize the proper user-specific data directory -- oh, grab one of the
"public" registration unlocks [there are a number posted on various web
sites*] { %appdata%\qualcomm\eudora } (and will ask you to create the
"dominant" personality server information). %appdata%\qualcomm\eudora is
normally a HIDDEN directory; unless you configure the file explorer to show
hidden directories you will only be able to get to it from a command line
shell.

NOTE: if your existing data files are already in that user-specific data
directory, Eudora should find the files and use them as-is.

If your existing data files were NOT in the user-specific directory,
NOW is the time to copy them TO the user-specific directory. Then edit the
Eudora.ini file looking for anything that references paths that are not the
user-specific directory path, changing them as needed.

* my copy shows
Generic User
3291578383333015
which unlocks "paid mode"

There is also a code at

When it didn't work, nothing happened. It did not open a webpage in Chrome (or any other browser), did not show an error message, just no response.
I fear that someday I may have to stop using Eudora, when an OS update makes it unworkable. What do I switch to then?
I'm leaning toward Thunderbird. I really would like to retain the 23 years (90,000 email messages that I have saved.
Still in development (getting about two releases a month) is Pandora.
I've actually transitioned to using it as the primary, and only popping up
Eudora when I encounter something that isn't displaying properly in Pandora
(yes -- while Pandora does handle UTF there are some badly formatted emails
that can be recovered by Eudora <G>)

Pandora will import Eudora mailboxes (and attempts to import
personalities, filters, et al). Filters are set up differently which may
cause some problems -- and my Junk box often seems to end up with a
negative count [I suspect junk algorithm and a filter both may be junking a
message and throwing the count off].

A Google search probably won't find it (too many hits for streaming
music and some other application using the same name)

And then there is that group that claims to be working with recently
released Eudora source code...

I can't explain your problem. I click on a link in an email and it opens the default browser under Win 10 which for me is Firefox always. Sometimes it also brings up a dialog asking if I want to open an app and offers to look in the store. If I try to do a search on selected text it brings up an error web page. Or I can send the email to the browser which first opens a dialog box... but none of these fail with no indication.

I used to use Codewright as an editor, but at some point it stopped working and I can no longer get it to work. So I guess software does eventually break.
