Looks Like We're Not Going to Have to Worry about Global Warming After All

You may have heard the news about how hundreds of people have died in Indonesia
because of a tsunami that struck without warning.

Some of the articles noted that the tsunami was caused by a volcanic eruption.

One article I encountered named the volcano.

Krakatoa.

Remember it?

Apparently the pressure has been building up, and it had to let out a tiny little
belch. It could well be, though, that a more major eruption from that volcano is a
possibility in the relatively near future.

Which would have zip effect in any long-term sense on warming. Tambora,
which was a larger eruption than Krakatoa, only caused a few years of
cooling.

Yes, you're right. Pinatubo was apparently in the same general category as
Krakatoa - while Tambora was an eruption of such a size as to be a very rare
event.

Oh, yes. Apparently [Anak] Krakatau lies at the juncture of
*three* fissures, or plate boundaries, or something ... Hal's
been mentioning this (he's a volcano maven*), but I can't
remember the exact technical term he used and he's gone out to
the store and won't be back for an hour or so.
_____
*Only on a theoretical basis, I hasten to add. He's said
occasionally that it would be fun to go look at Kilauea some time
when she's not being cranky.
I suppose he's heard the old joke about the tourist looking down into the volcano who says, "It looks like hell," and his guide says admiringly, "You Americans! You go everywhere!"

I read that off to him, and he said, "Heh. No, I hadn't heard
that one."

Even if Kilauea is being feisty, it's possible to stroll around on
the solidifying lava. Although my great-grandfather did complain
that "One had to keep constantly on the move to save the shoes
from burning."
