A sad event this week was the passing away of Dr Olivinho Gomes.
Several tributes to the life of this notable Goan has been posted on
Goanet:

An interesting article by Armstrong Vaz investigates the perils of
conversion for Muslim women in India.

A video sent in by tamdi matti gives us a virtuoso performance in
classical music by Joanne D?Mello.

One issue that is always high on the political agenda is the medium
for primary schools. Should we impart primary education in our
mother-tongue or are we disadvantaging them by doing so? Some opinions
on this issue were shared on Goanet.

Floriano Lobo:

Freddy Fernandes:

Francis Rodrigues has just launched a new, path-breaking Konkani
songbook. If you?re in London, you can meet Francis on August 15 as
well as join in the celebrations on World Goa Day. Rene Baretto gives
us the details.

A recent report released by the Economic Survey Report attributes the
increase in Goa?s population to an influx of migrant workers. This has
fueled the already heated debate of the effect of migration on Goa.
Here are some of the views expressed:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/180944.html

Venita Coelho, the Accidental Activist, prefers not killing snakes and
suggests we return them to their natural habitat.
http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/180996.html

Who is Claudius Buchanan? Well apparently Claudius Buchanan, was a
missionary who happened to provided a very detailed first-hand account
of the Goa Inquisition. He is quoted as a source by the historian
Priolkar while writing his own historical retrospective on the
Inquisition. The question now arises, was Buchanan an unbiased source
or did he play into the religious politics of his time which pitted
Protestantism against Catholicism. Here are some interesting posts.
