Did not see this thread yesterday, I posted my predictions on a different thread. Quite sure I predicted Bayer to win 3-1 and that I got all the upcoming games predictions correct as well.

The title of the thread is "Derbytime" and it was a far more entertaining and factually relevant thread than this one, not that I want to take away from your puny tipping thread, that does not even mention one derby. OK, it mentions one.

I was all for VAR, but the handball calls are bad. What is happening and will continue to happen is that VAR handball PK calls are becoming the new diving in the box. What attacking players do is just shoot at the defenders arm hoping to get a PK, bad direction for football, turns it into a WWE like circus.

They are first and virtually assured promotion. Gutsy call by
management. (seriously, with that attacking power they should have 20
points more)

Koeln has a lot of potential. If they can sort themselves out they can
play a decent role in that farce of a league.

HSV OTOH - I would be very surprised if we did not go down. And not
surprised at all if we didn't go up in the first place.

You obviously know your team. Winless in league since that great derby
win and just 3 points in 6 games. Just to complete the picture, during
this stretch HSV beat Paderborn away in the cup. Paderborn that is the
team of the hour with 16 points in those same 6 rounds.

If Leibold hadn't missed that last-minute penalty the upcoming Leipzig-

home win by Bayern over Hannover means they'll be out of reach by then

Any prospects that this league will successfully generate interest for the sport

guess they must have their eyes set in 2026 and beyond.

I dont think this league will last one season, unless funding is coming from other sources. They are starting with a seven team league, with travel distances of 5000km and small stadiums. I am afraid this wont work, though they had 17k out for the derby match between Hamilton and York (Toronto).

Oh and meanwhile in the Bundesliga 2, everyone is dropping points in an effort to avoid promotion. HSV is now safely out of the promotion zone (on goal diff). Three games left in the season.

This league looks as though it is too ambitious, and I am afraid Binder
might be right and it will only go one season. Not a lot of household
names on the various rosters, but a few older players that were national
team regulars and played multiple seasons in Europe (Marcel Dejong, Nik
Ledgerwood, Marcus Haber, Issy Nakajima-Farran, Randy Edwini-Bonsu, Kyle
Bekker, Michael Petrasso, Gasparoto, Telfer.

7 teams is awkward, and it is a blow that Ottawa did not join in, but
preferred to stay in USL. Also no teams in Quebec.

Ticket prices are pretty high (mostly in the 30s as far as I can see),
which seems a lot for a product at this level. MLS cheap seats in
Toronto, and presumably also Vancouver and Montreal, overlap with these
prices. CBC will cover some games.

Go Pacific FC!
I suspect they will be good.

Any prospects that this league will successfully generate interest for the sport
in Canada?
There is lots of interest for the sport here, and many people play
(especially kids). All three MLS teams are quite well supported, and
there is a large market for TV coverage of all the big European leagues,
the CL, Europa etc. What there is not is a huge amount of support for
a Canadian league or lower leagues (like USL or the old A-league). The
original Canadian league founded on the Euphoria of qualifying for WC
1986 was never really sustainable, and the number of teams fluctuated
wildly and eventually it all petered out.

Since I moved to S. Alberta in 1986, I have gone out to support the
Calgary kickers, Calgary Strikers, Calgary Storm, Calgary Mustangs, and
I am sure I will make time to go to a few Cavalry FC games, but I am
quite pessimistic about the longevity of this league.

Potential is there. And this league might provide a slightly higher
level of competition for some young players, so even if it dies, it
could still achieve something.

Hard to say. there have been so many failures - the old NASL, the
Canadian league, and so on. MLS seems firmly established, though.

The 1986 version of the league might have met a different fate if
momentum had been maintained through qualification for WC 1990, which
really should have been attained with Mexico disqualified. But an
unlucky and not really deserved loss to Guatemala put paid to that.
(away goals).

I was all for VAR, but the handball calls are bad. [...]
The handball calls are good. Finally, the refs have the technology
to catch the players with all the dirty tricks they have accumulated
over the years. "Oh my hand was just out and he shot the ball onto it"
is not a valid excuse. No whining about "natural jumping position"...
we all learned to play with our hands down when I was an amateur kicker.

These players are deviously clever and they know exactly what they
are doing. And they are finally getting caught. And the excuses are
just what you would expect from a bunch of tricksters.

Do you really think that many players think that way ? I find that a
bit of a stretch. For one thing, there is a good chance that an
extended arm might deflect a shot that was not going in into the net. I
have no idea by just how much standing with your arms slightly extended
on both sides (say a 45 degree angle) enhances your chances of saving a
goal vs. causing a goal. Maybe I am naive but I have trouble
attributing such deliberate sinister motives to so many players.

And you don't think any of them are innocent of any evil intent ?

Oh MH I am sure these guys are paragons of innocence. Seriously.
That is not what I said. Clearly not everyone is innocent of any intent.
I wanted to suggest that, just maybe, some of the people being called
for handball in the way you advocate might not actually be guilty of
deliberately putting their arms in unnatural positions with their eyes
on the main chance of blocking a shot (again - are the odds on that
particularly good ?) and might be victimized by that interpretation of
the law (which, I repeat DOES not correspond to the current law as
written and the associated guidelines for interpretation as published by
FIFA - pending future changes this year, of course).

Furthermore, such a narrow interpretation (when, as it seems it will be,
it is implemented by actually modifying the law) will result in
punishment that in some cases does not fit the crime, as in cases when
there is no conceivable advantage to the defending player coming from
the fact that a ball inadvertently hit his extended arm - eg. deflected
out for a corner when it would have gone for a goal kick if the arm had
not been there.

It's an automatic thing... you put your arm out while defending whetner
you need to or not. Look at the Dortmund player defending on the
Schalke shot... he's not looking anywhere unusual in particular, just
has his arm out just in case (and it even makes a motion to the ball).

The bit with the arm out to block the ball "and oh it was just out there"
is something I've seen quite a lot of. He puts his arm out there, trying
to time pulling it back just the right amount to make it look better.
The ball happens just to bounce at his feet. This has been on display
many times. Dahoud in trying to learn it made it really obvious.

I dont know in what slug like world you live in where beings just move around really slowly and have no need for balance or propulsion? if you actually played footb...no, actually moved more than the average slug, you would realize your arms are constantly in motion. There are some really weird people who barely move their arms when walking, but that rarity is what makes them look weird. Have you ever seen a runner keep their arms on their sides? I can honestly say, I have been called for more handballs that were totally unintentional in my career than I have for deliberate or even instinctive handballs.

There are too many of you idiots who dont get what is going on with human anatomy, nevermind football today. The whole fanbase consists of computer idiots from America and Asia who have no idea what is going on in a game, you and Benny are prime examples of just that.

HSV's season is coming to an end. We will stay in league 2. In the first half of the season we played badly but god points enough to spend the break on a promotion spot. This wasn't a good thing, we needed to strengthen the team and didn't.

Coming out of the break we played somewhat better, but the luck of the first half left us and we started losing points. Now nerves come into play and all is falling apart.

We will replace the manager.

We will finally get rid of Lasogga.

I hope the SD has a plan.

We are another big step down the route towards doing a 1860.

Hasn't he pulled the chestnuts out of the fire for you several times
this season?

Something you often don't know... sometimes when they do have a
grand vision it can do harm.

You do need new players and a concept to fit them into, though.

It is possible to come back after a house-cleaning like Duesseldorf...

Even more extreme: Hertha.

25 games, 13 goals, 2 assists. But his limitations limit us, and he misses a good part of each season with injuries.

How does that work? Duesseldorf were also dead to rights financially.
How far down were they put? 4th IIRC. But they had to do the rounds
and it's more recent that they consolidated and came back. I mention
them because after HH and M that should be the next richest city in
Germany (ie, more than Berlin).

And he is probably on some hefty wages.

Köln finally got over the line Monday. Massive Paderborn - HSV match
on Sunday.
