Recently, I read a book titled "The Ugly Chinese" by Bo Yang. This
book was translated from Chinese to Vietnamese and I am deeply
grateful to the author, the translator and the publisher for having
enabled me to experience this great book. It has caused some serious
thinking changes in me (about my identity as an Asian American)
As I have alluded, I am Vietnamese and this book is about the Chinese
people but it's equally valid and applicable for Vietnamese people
because the two cultures are very similar. JMO, this book is a
must-read for every Chinese and Vietnamese.
Bo Yang lives in Taiwain. He was imprisoned there for about ten years
for his writings. "The Ugly Chinese" was published in both Taiwan and
China.
Some chapters in this book are speeches that Bo Yang gave at Stanford,
Iowa ... in the early 80's. These speeches at one time has caused a
lot of commotion in the Chinese community in the US.
Has anyone heard about or read this book? I would like some comments.
Dear Petrus: I read Bo Yang's "The Ugly Chinese" quite some years ago. I agree with you that this book is psychologically and emotionally astute and that it is not only applicable to the Chinese culture but also a number of East Asian cultures that adopted, hundreds of years ago, the tenets of Confucianism. Chinese in my mind are seriously good looking but the Vietnamese take the cake on being the ugliest. Not only that many Vietnamese have a serious attitude. They are real jerks.
