The birth of a new Prince of Cambridge leads one to wonder about possible
future Royal Dukedoms.

As of yet none have been created that can pass to or through females
(we'll see if that changes next month).Gloucester and Kent have heirs
in line, while Edinburgh (which is pledged to be recreated for the
Earl of Wessex) is destined to merge in the Crown.

As the present Duke of York has no heirs his title stands to expire
on his death, which could be in time for it to be granted anew to the
infant Prince.

Cumberland and Albany remain suspended for the past century.

Should the Duke of Cambridge and Prince George somehow both
die before the Queen and Prince of Wales have both died, thanks to
the Succession to the Crown Act Princess Charlotte would become
next in line to the Throne, but the new Prince would inherit the
Dukedom of Cambridge.

Otherwise, with Sussex expected to go to Prince Henry of Wales,
Clarence or Kendal may have to come off the shelf for the
sons of the Duke of Cambridge if Cornwall does not descend
upon George within an expected time-frame.

... should Princess Charlotte get a hereditary title suo jure, and for her descendants?

Just like Sweden, and not being male first. It will be interesting to see in 20-30 years from now. I believe she should receive a title upon or before her marriage.

The eldest daughter of a Sovereign in the UK customarily becomes
"Princess Royal" once that title falls vacant...like the Swedish
titles this is not hereditary.
I expect that will do for Charlotte.

1. If Charles lives to see George marry, could there be an Act of Parliament to transfer Cambridge from Prince William, the by-then Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay? A sort of statutory writ of acceleration? Similar to hypothetical transfers of dukedoms from Frederick Prince of Wales (and Duke of Edinburgh) or from the future George V as Prince of Wales (and Duke of York).

2. HM has surprised us before in her choice of title for a descendant. Could Harry become Duke of Ross and Earl of Sussex, with a Barony named after e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greencastle,_County_Down? It would balance his brother's English dukedom - and Sussex was previously created as an earldom for the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn.

It would give Cambridge an unwarranted special status it has never had

The Dukedom of "Edenburgh" created for Prince Frederick descended to
George III before the latter was created Prince of Wales, and George V's
elder brother had been Duke of Clarence...there is no particular
title-for-the-second-heir in the UK,despite other countries having
had such.Better to have a rotation than suddenly make Cambridge unlike

The uncle is Earl of Wessex. It might be presumptuous to raise Mercia above Wessex by making it a marquessate. Earl of Mercia would be fine.

I go for the alliteration.

Remember that the uncle is expected to be made a Duke in due course
and the Earldom will be a courtesy title...and if that is not the
ultimate outcome a practice of a Dukedom for eldest sons,
Marquessate for second sons,Earldom for third sons could also make sense.

Additionally,it is not so much an unfair bump-up for Mercia to be
a Marquessate as it is a snub to Wessex to make it a mere Earldom;
each name covers more than one modern county. When the Saxon kings
had an "Earl of Wessex" or "Earl of Mercia" under them there was no
higher degree of peerage available.
