Post by MichaelPost by David KaryHello backgammon lovers!! I have noticed some flaws in existing backgammon apps out there, and I think that we all deserve better. I'm planning on investing personal money into creating a new backgammon app, but I want to make sure I'm on the right track before I do. I'd really appreciate it if everyone who reads this could let me know one thing you love about the app you currently use, and one thing you hate and wish was done differently about the app you currently use.
Also, I'm thinking of charging $9/mo after a 30 day free trial as my business model. Is this something you would pay? What would be the barrier to entry for you?
Thanks so much for helping!!
The "best" one today imo is backgammon studio.
Hi!
Thanks for the positive feedback!

Things I don't like there
I try to investigate and fix any problem that is reported.
What part of it is slow? Some find the animation to be slow but on Heroes you can change almost everything and you can make the checkers move very fast if you like.
Menu/Settings/Board settings/Animations
Sometimes opponents are slow or have slow networks and you can exclude that and try matches with the computers and check if it plays a lot faster.
I watched one match some time ago where one player had 1 or 2 (don't remember exactly anymore) seconds left on the clock for 2 whole games. I don't think that is possible if the server was slow.
Post by Michaelb)Allows players to shuffle the checkers unlimited number of times, and the clock presets are 3-4 times the time needed for thinking.
b2)The fast mode on the other hand is preset at 8 seconds per move and about 2(?) minutes for a 7 pointer which is not enough to complete the match
There are many clocks available some with very low time settings. The standard tournament settings 2 minutes/game 12 seconds bank can be slow. Try blitz with 12 seconds/game and 4 bank. That is crazy fast. Many other combinations are available. Standard clock 2 minutes/10 seconds could be worth a try.
Post by Michaelc)Most players play in BG Studio mode, (compared to the standard competition mode). With that they get to know their equity loss after they make a cube or move error. Not fair imo
Most external tournament matches are run in competition mode with no help. For instance the ones run by https://www.wbif.net/
BG Studio mode is the most educational mode and can be quite fun and a little painful if you end up with a bloodbath (lots of red blunders) which perhaps helps you adjust your play to make you play better.
I think most tournaments run by clubs also uses competition mode/tournament match so you can check if your local club is running or would be interested in running tournaments on the server.
Invite and play with friends who have the same preferences as you have. I think some players exclusively play one format or the other while others are more flexible.
Post by Michaeld)It has bots with which people may play.
Bad or a good thing? I guess it can be a bit of both.
Post by Michaele)You wait for too long to play with someone and the bots make your effort to find a hunan opponent even harder.
Joining tournaments (and don't be shy, join all you see!) will give you opponents.
The king of the hill tournaments are popular and allows anyone to challenge the current king when the king isn't playing.
Invite and play with friends is an option to both have someone to play with and also reduce chances of playing someone who are not so nice. Players that doesn't behave do get penalties and if they don't improve their behavior will soon find themselves unable to play more matches or have restrictions on who they are allowed to play against.
Post by MichaelThings I like
a)it's free, but you do get some extras if you register for a fee. A personal database, and things like that.Lots of players ahave actually registered, I think they pay a lifetime fee of about $20. I am thinking of registering too, just to support the site.
It is not lifetime but I think it is reasonable.
Post by Michaelb)Lots of super strong players at PR3 and lower. Known Giants also play there, the other day Michy was playing.
c)It has a ladder rating system based on FIBS rating.
d)the dice seems fair.
e)It has Unlimited/Money games, which are obviously used for "private gambling".I am against gambling as a matter of priciple. About 3% of the players do play Unlimited/Money games at any time.
It does have support for it but this is something you should only play against players you know personally and trust. The server doesn't take any rake or has any financial involvement in this and what players play for is not known to the server.
It looks like very few play it. Perhaps 1-2 matches tops at the same time.
It is 1 out of 17 different match types available so there are many other options available.
Post by MichaelThat said, I think $9/month is high, and might keep out people from poor countries. From a quick look about 1/4 of the people playing at BG studio are from Latin America.A flag appears showing the country from which each one logs in...
$9/month sounds like a lot but Heroes has a $3/$4 option if you want to support the server and like access to the extra features but you don't have to upgrade if you don't want to.
And the number of features is vast many of which you won't find anywhere else.
Post by MichaelA co-forumer for example who I thought was British logs in from Argentina!!
Sometimes it is hard to tell for sure where someone are from and sometimes players live in one country but have a different nationality.
