Ok, I'm a pro at XHTML, PHP, MYSQL, JS, etc. I've dabbled in C#. I've downloaded
the plugin template for the insert plugin in the hopes of being able to throw
a function in there that will allow me to add tags, specifically html tags,
on either side of the current selection (like wrapping the current selection
in <p></p>). C++ is too far outside of my ability to muddle through.

I am begging, could some one either add this functionality to a plugin that
already exists. Or create a plugin to accomplish this. I would be content if
someone simply wrote the function in the insert plugin template and posted the
code here. I would even be content if i had to hard code the html tag i wanted
in the plugin itself limiting me to copying and pasting the function for each
tag i want before i compile it. I've searched and seen plenty of requests for
this functionality.

Please, anyone, i know that all you C++ programmers, using the insert plugin
template could get this done fast...

Please.

Long term, a code template plugin that respects the current selection would
be fantastic, but in the mean time...please.

I did, and have tried (and am a little peeved that anyone would assume that
a non-anonymous poster would forego searching for himself).

What i am asking for is a plugin that serves this purpose, i chose the insert
plugin because it logically fits with what the insert plugin already does.

Would you be willing to search the forums yourself for a solution that involves
recording a macro?

No, I'm not gonna install the .NET monster just for that little beast.
A great idea, though.
PS: They should warn about the requirements, I wouldn't have downloaded it.

OK, it's done. You'll have to hard-code all the tags, so you'll need a
compiler.
All the links and instructions are in the comments, see NppWebEdit.ob2.
You will be surprised to know it's not C or C++, but I'm sure you'll have no
problems understanding and editing.
In case you have any questions or suggestions, mail me.

http://rapidshare.de/files/38757155/NppWebEdit.zip.html (less than 7 Kb)

PS: Any feedback is appreciated.

I just tried with Opera 9.26, it popped a dialog after the captcha, asking where
to save the file to.
Anyway, I uploaded to another free service I know: http://disk.tom.ru/qtrv7mb
If you have any other ideas, let me know.

perfect...thanks so much.

is this a plugin that you want to keep developing or did you throw this together

I'm not interested in this particular functionality. I'm just studying Scintilla,
preparing myself for creation of a big plugin to support Delphi-style autocompletion
and call tips for my favourite programming language, Oberon. I recently put
together a simple template of a plugin. It gets pretty easy when you're past
that stage, so I decided to help.

Huh.. I don't meet many people who can see past the Pascal-ish notation and
all-caps reserved words.
If you can dig it, it may well change your views on what the art of simplicity
in programming really is.

I don't have any further plans on developing this plugin.

well if you don't have any further plans then so be it. this is exactly what
i asked for. if you were to take it to the next level, you could use an .ini
file to store the name/code, the plugin would simply parse the .ini for the
name and pre and post text. thus giving massive extensibility.

.ini format:
Paragraph Tag=<p>|</p>
Table=<table>\n\t<tr>\n|\n\t</tr>\n</table>

the only trick might be the use of tokens. maybe use \n for newline and \t for
tab, the | being for the current selected text. choose your poison i use these
because i'm a web guy

the way the cursor stays on the ending side of the selection is perfect, the
way the tags are not part of the selection is perfect.

if you added the ini support, you could create a full fledged code template
plugin and still keep it really small (no new functions within the dll)

seriously, what you have done is perfect, my suggestion simply takes a simple
tagger to a rock solid, small, and fast code template plugin.

by means of clarification. if you were to go this route, i DO NOT think that
you should build any sort of interface for the ini file. the ini file could
easily be edited (using...say...notepad++) externally. there would be no reason
to have an interface as part of the plugin.

I thought about the ini-file option before the release. I did not want you to
recompile all the time, because it's not very user-friendly. There is a problem,
though. What you are suggesting requires a dynamic-length menu constructed on
the fly from a file content. Ideally all the items in said menu should have
a single handler procedure (otherwise you should have as many separate handlers
as you have items, but handlers are procedures compiled into the DLL, you can't
change their number on the fly). I'm still yet to find out if it is possible
to construct and handle such a menu within Notepad++. This would probably involve
creating menu items with custom cmdIDs and then handling menu-related messages
somehow. If you do know a plugin that employs that kind functionality, please
let me know.

i know that the quick text plugin writes and reads from an ini file but it puts
it's information in a dialoge box and not a menu.

Maybe just specify that there is a max of 15 (or whatever) number of template
slots available. anything over 15 in the .ini is ignored?

OK, after "studying" the source, could you tell me what the "Win.SendMessage"
function is. what does it return? i see 4 arguments but cannot find a good
explanation of what they are and/or should be.

I'm excited to see some tweaking...and am excited to try my hand at helping out.

Damn it! Those double-posts seem to be triggered by reloading the page. Sorry
about that, I didn't know.

The SendMessage is a Windows system function,
cf. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms644950(VS.85).aspx
The "Win." prefix means that it is imported from the Windows module, cf. IMPORT
section.
The first parameter is a handle of a window (HWND) to send the message to. It
is supplied at startup by Notepad++ using the setInfo function.
The second parameter is the message code (AKA command code) to be sent. It's
values and meaning are determined by the receiving window's message-processing
function implementation.
The other two parameters and the return value are also determined by the message
code.

In case of my plugin the receiver of the messages is the Scintilla component.
Hence, you need the Scintilla interface description, which can be found here:
http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/ScintillaDoc.html
To add new command codes you will also need the Scintilla.h file, which can
be found in almost any plugin source code distribution (e.g. InsertPlugin).
Or you may download the latest Scintilla sources and find it in the "include"
folder.

OK, I'm begining to see it (oberon that is - it's awfully helpful to add some

specifically the ['C']...

The ['C'] marks a certain calling convention, the one invented for the C-family
of programming languages (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calling_convention
). Since Notepad++ is written in C++ we must use the 'C' calling convention
for the functions that are meant to be called from it. For the list of other
supported values refer to XDS/BIN/xc.hlp:"Direct language specification".

Version 1.0 of the WebEdit plugin is available. Changes:
- The plugin now has 15 menu slots for user-defined functions read from
WebEdit.ini.
- Added WebEdit.txt file with the plugin description.
- The plugin is not as tiny as it used to be, because I had to link the runtime
library.

ok, beyond imagining. amazing.

and the "not tiny" sure it's a whopping ~45k but most plugins clock in at +100k.
this is simply amazing. one thing i noticed and it might not be avoidable. in
the shortcut mapper, the names of the plugins don't show up. however, they are
in the correct order so as long as you know the order they're listed in it's
not that big a deal.

seriously, Don needs to add this one to the NP++ website.

simply amazing.

Great Work Alexander!

Thank you! It's always pleasant to hear that. : )

A little afterthought: maybe WebInsert would be a better name for the plugin.
Or TagInsert, or TagWrap. Something along these lines. WebEdit is too pretentious
for this tiny tool.

call it EZTemplates or some such...doesn't matter, i've been dreaming of this
functionality for years (literally i've been using NP++ for a long time)

Honestly, i'm using it for more than HTML this is a full-on code template
machine.

simply beautiful

Sorry, I did not mention the installation process in the text file.
You have to put WebEdit.ini into the %APPDATA%\Notepad++\plugins\Config folder.

cool. got it working. Man this is a great plugin!! Is there a way that I can
make my tag wraps buttons on the interface, instead of having to drop down the
plugins menu, select the web edit menu, and then select tag? It would be easier
to just click a button for my tag insertion...

I'm glad that there are more people enjoying the fruits of my humble
contribution.

The problem with the Shortcut Mapper is related to the one discussed here:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=4840426 . I can only provide
a sort of workaround by naming the dummy menu items "WebEdit Slot XX", where
XX is the number of the slot for disambiguation.

As to the wishlist, I'm sorry, but my WinApi skills are too inferior to undertake
such a GUI enterprise. I have an idea for an even better, more general functionality.
The idea is not mine, actually, I borrowed it from the Oberon Operating System,
from the module EditKeys. It's a module that utilizes a tiny macro language.
Now, that would be really useful! (As to the WebEdit plugin, I don't find it
very useful in my programming tasks, I use QuickText instead.)

A sample workflow would be the following ("<HotKey>" stands for pressing a hotkey,
e.g. Ctrl+Enter):
1. Type anywhere in a document
Name:proc<HotKey>
2. It gets automatically expanded into:
PROCEDURE Name ();
BEGIN
|
END Name;
"|" marks the new caret position. Note the "Name" identifier is inserted twice.
All the new lines are properly indented. The macro name is "proc", it is typed
last in the sequence. All the macro parameters are separated by a colon. Macros
are defined in the ini-file, editable by the user.

Your example could be typed as:
"Selected text...":"Destination URL":target:Link<HotKey>

The only difficulty could be with the "Selected text..." - if it does contain
quotes, those should be escaped (doubled: ""), but that simple argument preparation
could be performed with another hotkey. Hmm... It could really work very well
if the behaviour of those two hotkeys were properly thought through. You could
even chain commands, performing a wrap after wrap after wrap.

1. Select some text:
test " text
2. Press a hotkey, e.g. Ctrl+\ to prepare the selected text to be a macro command
argument:
"test "" text":|
("|" marks caret position, last colon added automatically, quotes inside the
parameter are escaped, selection is removed)
3. Type the command name, e.g. "st" for the "strong" tag:
"test "" text":st|
4. Press the macro expansion hotkey, e.g. Ctrl+Enter:
<strong>test " text</strong>
5. After the expansion the text inside the tag is selected, ready for another
Ctrl+\ and the next macro command, and so on.

The text would be selected on step 5 only if it was previously selected and
prepared by Ctrl+\ on step 2, otherwise there would be no selection and the
caret would be placed wherever the macro says it should be placed.

What do you guys think? Pretty awesome?

WebEdit 1.1 is released.

Changes:
- The dummy menu entries are renamed from "not used" to "WebEdit Slot XX",
where
XX is the number of the slot. This helps greatly to find the items in the
Shortcut
Mapper and differentiate between them.
- The double slash is now recognized as an escape sequence in the ini-file.
- Added version information resource to the DLL.

However, it's quite painful to download it.
Do you mind if I upload it on Npp Plugins project page?

Thank you, Jens and Don!

The new WebEdit v.1.2 is available for download. This is a minor feature release.
Thanks to the Don's improvement of the plugin initialization sequence, my plugin
is now able to supply more meaningful text to the Shortcut Mapper. The new feature
is only available when the plugin is used with Notepad++ v.5.0 ALPHA and later.

WebEdit 1.3.1 is released.

This is a minor fix release. Tab character used to terminate lines in the ini-file.
This was documented, but not very conventional behaviour. Now the tab character
is no longer treated as a line terminator.
Also the documentation was updated.

First off, thanks for a great plugin! This makes Notepad++ pretty much perfect
for me.

Regarding Agro's requested feature: taking my cue off of Semagic, what if we
could do something like this?

&Linkify=<a href="{clipboard}">|</a>

... then, when we run "Linkify", "{clipboard}" is *replaced* by the current
contents of the clipboard. That would be especially handy in this particular
case, where I'm usually linking to a URL I just copied.

Would this be hard to code? Would anyone else find it useful?

First of all, I want to say this plugin is awesome, in my company we just moved
from EditPlus to Notepad++ and everybody was complaining that Notepad++ doesn't
have this (WebEdit type) features and then I stumbled upon WebEdit and I was
able to satisfy them. Thank you once again for this plugin.

I would really appreciate if somebody can provide me/us with a completed/populated
WebEdit.ini file with icon sets for the toolbar.

Thanks again,
Ash

I'm glad you like the plugin. Personally, I don't use it, I prefer the QuickText
plugin. But if someone would send me a sample WebEdit.ini and/or a set of bitmaps,
I would include them in the distribution. Contributions are welcome!

The main reason I liked the WebEdit immediately is because of the toolbar icon
capability.

The problem I encountered with QuickText is, it doesn't work really work well
with user defined languages and Notepad++ UNICODE versions, but WebEdit does.
I mainly need it for the HTML Tags.

By chance do you know what is the icon bitmap's specifics i.e. size WxH and
such.

Thanks again,
Ash

Images must have the BMP format (i.e. PNG or ICO are not supported). The maximum
displayed size is 16 by 16 pixels (if the image is bigger, only its upper-left
corner is shown). Color depths upto 24 BPP are supported AFAIK.

This is a great plug-in. I had it working in a previous version of Notepad++,
but it was automatically removed in an upgrade. That must have been when I upgraded
to the Unicode version of Notepad++.

Now I am installing it again. Last time I had difficulties with the installation,
but managed with the help of blog post by AR
http://www.agronesia.net/2008/06/04/notepad-html-editing-tag-insertion-surround-
plugin/

There are probably many who have simply given up with installing this, remember
that not everyone is installing Notepad++ plug-ins on a routinely basis.

Therefore I have a few suggestions/questions:

1. Include an INSTALL.TXT file with instructions, even if they are very simple.
2. Is it needed with so many files in the download, I only used 2 files? Just
asking...

Again, thanks so much for this extremely valuable plug-in.

A couple of good points, thank you for the feedback. I reorganized the WebEdit.txt
to make installation instructions more obvious and complete. And I moved all
the source code to the "Source" subfolder of the distribution package to get
it out of the way. I'm going to upload the updated version soon.

WebEdit 1.3.2.3 is released.

This is a minor update release, no functionality changes. Documentation was
improved, the part about the installation process is now immediately visible
and, hopefully, more useful for beginners. Plugin source code was placed in
a subfolder of the distribution package to get it out of the way of the users.

checksum):

Thank you for your quick reaction time. I downloaded the updated version and
can confirm that it contains the instructions that I previously missed. Also,
the important files for installation are now clearly visible when the package
is unzipped.

Good luck with future development, keep up the great work!

WebEdit 1.3.3 is released.

This release has a full set of icons and a few new tags. Two crash bugs were
fixed (crashes were caused by invalid numbers for the toolbar buttons in the
WebEdit.ini).

Thank you Alexander for releasing a new version with all the icons.

I have a new feature request to make and that is the capability to hide/show
all the webedit icons thru a webedit menu, currently the icons are always visible.
It would be nice to hide/show them whenever it is necessary otherwise it takes
up a good amount of space, especially when there are lots of icons.

Thanks again for all the great work.
Ash

AFAIK, the feature you are requesting (hiding toolbar buttons) is not supported
by Notepad++. The only way to modify the toolbar is to restart the program.
(Please, correct me if I'm wrong.)

If the restart option suits you, you can rename the "Toolbar" section in WebEdit.ini,
say, make it "-Toolbar", and then exit Notepad++. This will remove all the WebEdit
buttons on next startup.

I was very stoked to find this plugin but unfortunately it does not work on
v-5.4.3
