How do you measure solar energy flowing one-way to the grid on the AC1
connection of an SW-series inverter? Is there a one-way transducer
available so that the circuit does not have to be opened?

I betcha Ethan Brand has something for this. He's able to do an awful lot
with transducers. I'm sure ignoring "negative" flow would not be hard.

Dear Joel,

We use standard Kwhr meters with detents that allow
flow in one direction only. A Brand meter will do the
same if you "plug" the meter into the AC1 output and
put the grid on the meter load side. (for up to 1850
watts.)

Nice ideas. The detents are a good way to go for new installations. Ethan
Brand also suggested putting his meter in line, but I have over 1850
watts. Also, a one-way transducer on other people's existing systems would
allow us to see how the systems are performing. Any other thoughts?

A high-end solution is Ethan Brand's "One Meter", for those that want to
send data to their PC or other data logger. He uses a single AC
transducer, the AC1 input/output wire goes thru in one direction, the AC
output wire goes thru in the opposite direction, so any grid power that
passes thru the inverter to support loads on the AC output terminal gets
automatically zeroed out. This is an $800 solution, but it will monitor
all DC and AC power flow, and send all the info to your handy-dandy
spreadsheet. I encouraged Ethan to develop a package that would monitor
power in and out of the SW or any other intertied, battery-based system,
this is what we came up with. I've ordered a couple of them, and will be
installing one on my son-in-law's 7kW system (when it arrives). I'll let
the list know how it works out.

enough) with an external current transducer. You will
have toask him if it is one way only as I haven't used
one that way yet.

to read PV production :-)

I'm pretty sure Ethan said (or meant to say) "one transducer on both
AC1 and AC output to read PV production." AC2 is for generators, it's
input only.

HOT OUT. Do people still use generators that consume non-renewable natural
resources and exhaust toxic gases into the atmosphere?

A high-end solution is Ethan Brand's "One Meter", for those that want to
send data to their PC or other data logger. He uses a single AC
transducer, the AC1 input/output wire goes thru in one direction, the AC
output wire goes thru in the opposite direction, so any grid power that
passes thru the inverter to support loads on the AC output terminal gets
automatically zeroed out. This is an $800 solution, but it will monitor
all DC and AC power flow, and send all the info to your handy-dandy
spreadsheet. I encouraged Ethan to develop a package that would monitor
power in and out of the SW or any other intertied, battery-based system,
this is what we came up with. I've ordered a couple of them, and will be
installing one on my son-in-law's 7kW system (when it arrives). I'll let
the list know how it works out.

Dear Joel,

We use standard Kwhr meters with detents that allow
flow in one direction only. A Brand meter will do the
same if you "plug" the meter into the AC1 output and
put the grid on the meter load side. (for up to 1850
watts.)

How do you measure solar energy flowing one-way to
the grid on the AC1
connection of an SW-series inverter? Is there a
one-way transducer
available so that the circuit does not have to be
opened?

Dear Joel,

Ethan offers his meter in a 4 Kw vesion (if that is
enough) with an external current transducer. You will
have toask him if it is one way only as I haven't used
one that way yet.

Nice ideas. The detents are a good way to go for new
installations. Ethan
Brand also suggested putting his meter in line, but
I have over 1850
watts. Also, a one-way transducer on other people's
existing systems would
allow us to see how the systems are performing. Any
other thoughts?

Joel,
I'm pretty sure Ethan said (or meant to say) "one transducer on both
AC1 and AC output to read PV production." AC2 is for generators, it's
input only.
