Post by Mel SchmitzAmerica is so bankrupt that we'll probably never be solvent. All because of
avarice: Tax cuts for the rich, a war for corporate welfare and outsourcing
jobs to China and India in order to please greedy corporations.
America is morally bankrupt: Social Security will have to be cut to the
insignificant level because the millionaires and billionaires have walked
away with all the tax money. Americans will die in droves because they
can't afford food, housing or medicine. The scenes of sadistic torture in
Iraq have destroyed America's image forever.
America is physically threatened now more than ever. Iraq is the new haven
for terrorists. China, now more powerful because of Bush's outsourcing, is
now arming and may one day be the new Soviet Union. European countries now
see the U.S. a just a thug country and are unwilling to help pay for Iraq,
either in money or lives.
Why does the Left have no faith in the US? We've faced recessions,
inflation, war, deficits before and survived. Then prospered again
easily soon after.
We've never been faced with the end of the Age of Oil.
Nor are we now.
At this very moment, we still have prices hovering around 2 bucks a
gallon. By most assessments, prices will continue to climb as reserves
dwindle. The reason that smaller reserves aren't being exploited is
because it's now more expensive to drill and extract than it is to
realize profits from the venture. Oil prices have to rise precipitously
for profits to be realized.
One of the ominous signs of the collapse of cheap oil is the fact that
drilling and extraction of new oil has slowed to a crawl. New
discoveries of reserves have shown that they are smaller than
anticipated, and generally more difficult to extract. The major moves
in the oil industry aren't the discovery of new reserves, it's the
acquisition of smaller oil companies by larger ones.
Another sign is the desparate militarization of the middle east by the
US, obviously a move to protect the last great reserves of cheap oil.
Another is the strong push by China to buy up as many reserves as
possible, even Canadian shale deposits.
If you take a look at all of the international moves by countries,
right now, in their attempts to protect their own fossil fuel
interests, and you look at worldwide consumption trends as compared to
worldwide reserves, it's not too difficult to anticipate that within
the next decade, we'll be living in a very different world, and a very
different society.
One of the more despicable failures of the Bush administration is their
complete disregard for telling the US public of the looming and
catastrophic scenarios that will almost certainly be realized without
enormous effort and planning. Yet the "free market" (a euphemism if
there ever was one) gets all of the play, and the transnationals
continue to get all of the tax breaks.
A practical role of government at this juncture would be to use
corporate taxes from fossil fuel companies for government-funded
alternative energy projects. We need an urgent re-tooling of our energy
needs and of our energy grid before our entire economy faces imminent
collapse. We have no mechanism to replace the inevitable disappearance
of cheap oil, which will occur sooner rather than later.

still valid. It's "Fair and Balanced", "We Report, You Decide", even handed
and filled with Truth, Justice and The American Way.
Fox has no bias, that's why everyone in the world watches Fox news and it's
the number 1 TV network in the entire world. I think they should ban
the
rest
of them from carrying news and let Fox be the exclusive carrier of news world
wide. It's in the interests of Free Speech and Freedom Of The Press.
God Bless America Long live President Bush! The greatest leader that the
world has ever seen or will ever know. His popularity is unanimous.
