I think the some of the users, will find it an easier place to navigate,
than google groups.

Search able threads and better stickys and FAQs will start developing
organically too, with more usage.

Can I suggest using phpbb?

I don't think this is a very useful idea. FAQ-- we had wiki, if you think it is not clear enough or does not give you enough info or you want to add something, send e-mail to contact-/***@public.gmane.org, we will update it. And if you can approve that you are a responsible editor/contributor, we can even give you write access to the wiki page.

About the search or navigate and searching, what are you really looking for?

Folks, why not use http://www.phpbb.com/ on a free webhost?
For my hobby site I use http://www.000webhost.com/ and have never had
any down time in the last 2 years.

Just needs someone with the spare time and will to sort it out.....
maybe myself if I get spare time in the next month, but that does not
look very likely..

Regards,
Fred

000webhost can cancel any hosting at any time without giving a reason
since they monitor what you are hosting and are very STRICT. Just
thought I'd mention that.

Yes they are strict, but when I had a forum on my site I experienced
no problems what so ever, and that was with some of the expletives
used in posts by my mates. The forum was up for over a year and I took
it down after interest in my electronics project waned and I lost
interest.

Just to re-iterate I've had no problems over the last 2 years.
If I didnt think they'd be up to the job then I would not have
suggested them, and as will all websites, the motto is: backup,
backup! BACKUP!!

the zaurus forum has been with ibiblio for quite a long time and it's
been a solid service; there are a lot of technical and community sites

I also think we should wait with the forum. Google Groups may not be
navigable, but it is searchable, and some people don't even try to do that,
it seems.

James, why don't you try to get in touch with the guy from
http://www.androidx86.org ? There is already a wiki, and it seems he's
hosting this on his server, so adding a forum in due course should be
possible.

The push back is about the confusion it'll cause for potential
developers and users. We want to focus people on one place where
they're most likely to get an accurate and timely response, and that's
the Google Group.

Have you thought what happens when users / potential developers post
on your forum and then don't get a accurate/timely response because
the people doing a bulk (or all) of the work aren't reading your
forums? It'll most likely result in the user / potential developer
thinking the project is either dead or unsupported, which is incorrect
and bad for the project.

What you're proposing is basically to split the community between the
groups & your forum, and that's something I can't see any significant
advantage to given the primary driver behind it is just because you
think people won't use Google groups because they don't like how it
works.

+1

either have a forum, or a mailing list, but not both.

personally, I favour a forum. it stops top-posting, stops thread
hijacking, and encourages a better and more useful quoting style.

many forums come with reasonable search tools. and the ability to
categorize discussions is a major benefit coupled with selective
search.

This is a forum, maybe not like you're used to or with the features
you think are nice, but it's what the project leader has chosen. It's
simple, it works, and it's hosted by google.

I agree with Al, creating an unofficial forum will only serve to
separate those who work on the project from those who are trying to
find an answer.

Well, its there if anyone else wants to try it. I am not saying I don't
like this format of a forum, I just think it would be easier.

Not trying to fan any flames or anything like that. I took into account the
separation of the two forums, but I almost feel its the next step for this
project to evolve.

I have no problems maintaining it and making sure the google groups is not
just push aside or vice versus.

I can not tell you how much some other development forums have helped me out
in the past and currently, I am not trying to steal any thunder, I really
think it will drive a bigger user base.

As tempting as a forum is, I believe google groups serves the purpose of this project better. The forum will help new commers to find what they need a little easier than at google groups. But with a little of practice, you can easily adapt to searching google groups. Also, if a user reads all the mail that is pushed to their inbox using google groups, he or she will always be up to date on the latest. By the end of the day they are both thread based.

I believe what is needed is a more detailed wiki, with someone describing for beginers how different aspects of the system work. I know this already exists, but I believe it can be better. I wish I had the time and the knowledge to contribute to the wiki, if I did, I would gladly do it.

It will be tough to look for information in two places. I vote against a forum (no offence intended, and am not belittling the efforts done to contributing to this project).

Eventually the community will decide where the posts go.

I'm second.
As I have said, anyone can request/suggest me to update anything on the wiki that is not good enough. And we can give anyone write permission on the wiki page if he/she can prove that he/she is a responible contributor.

BTW--
The first task we have on the wiki page is to update the out of date contents, there are few pages written at very beginning of the project and should be updated. So if you do have time to maintain a new forum, why not just spend some good times to improve current wiki. It can help improve your personal knowledge on Android and Android-X86 as well. So it is a win win.

The place you can start with is to try out a VM build first and see if the wiki pages about the VM are still applicable or not and update then accordingly. And since you have already went through the "get source" page, anything you think need to be added may also be added.
