Can anyone tell me how to preserve carrots?

Whether we buy carrots from a supermarket or the local street market we
always find that, no matter how we try to keep them, within a few days
they have started to develop black patches on the surface.
We have tied taking them out of the packaging (mostly plastic from the
supers and paper bags for the traders)or leaving them in; putting them
in the vegetable basket in the kitchen or in the salad crisper in the
fridge. No great difference.
What is the solution? (And, yes we do grow our own and harvest them only
when needed but the quantities are rather small.)

I rarely buy carrots but when I do, keep them in the plastic bag they are
sold in, in the veg drawer in the fridge. They don't usually go brown
before I've eaten them all and a bag will last me a month or more.

Take off the greenery; dry them off; place on a sheet of absorbent paper
in the bottom of the fridge.

3-4 months.

Freezing is not a good idea as they need blanching - which is difficult

I frequently buy carrots and, like you, keep them in the veg drawer in
the fridge, although I generally liberate them from their plastic bag -
at least once I start on that bag. They only occasionally go off and
last a good couple of weeks quite happily.

Same here, ours from Lidl stay in the opened bag for at least a fortnight.

I don't keep carrots for long as buy them mainly for soup, either
carrot or chicken. I do have problems with small potatoes going black
and soft etc so take them out of the plastic bag and leave them on the
drainer for an hour to dry off. I think bagged veg tend to be wet. I
then put them in bowls in the fridge. This gives them much longer.

Can anyone tell me how to preserve carrots?
When I was a child (1960s) my parents had a metal ex-WW2 ammo chest
which was filled each autumn with alternate layers of sand and
carrots. Left outside it kept them fresh all winter, carrots being
removed as required.
