1950's and 60's I went to school with 2or3 girls who lived at this
home on tower rd.
Curious --was it an orphanage,or troubled girls or what.I can't
remember--JJC

I think 'unwed' mothers went there - run by either the Salvation Army
or the RCs.

no not the one on inglis st corner.It was a little farther north on
tower rd.Near the "T" of Victoria rd. There was a semi circle inclined
driveway and it was painted grey.It was not a catholic
establishment,because they attended tower rd school and i think Morris
st school.jjc

There were some that were orphans and some that were homeless. I was a
member at the church in the 50's and remember meeting some of the
residents. This is the building (the gray one).

That's the same building as the URL I posted and it wasn't run by the
Salvation Army. The one at the corner of Tower Rd. & Inglis might have
been but this one was for orphaned and homeless girls and is right
where Victoria Rd. runs into Tower.

its still there actually... dont think its exclusive to girls tho, its for
troubled youth.

We've already established that it's St. Paul's Home. You're correct
though that it's no longer just for girls. That changed in 1982. You
will find an excellent explanation of its mandate in this document.
It's actually now run by the same people that run Phoenix House.

If it's the place I'm thinking of (near Fenwick), I knew a girl who lived
there. She didn't have much good to say about the place! She had serious
anxiety problems as a result of a very unstable home, and they didn't seem
to have the experience or understanding to deal with that... They
repeatedly accused her of faking it...

Later in her life, she attended Dal. One day, she saw the guy who'd run
the place when she lived there -- the guy with the highest credentials and
the most control over residents. She said, "You must be getting your PhD,
are ya?" Nope. He was getting his *bachelor's*!

A few years later, she and several other students were invited to speak
about their experiences there. She pulled no punches. These days, IIRC,
anyone who works there must have a degree (what a novel idea ;)

No, it wasn't an orphanage nor was it for homeless or unwed mothers.It was a residence for girls who had to be removed from their families for one reason or another. None were pregnant. The girls attended regular school. Lived a very structured and strict life while there.

I lived in that area from early 50's thru early 60's and that building
was always there. There was an old house in behind it also that when
young we called "haunted". We always thought that place was an unwed
mothers house but memory does not recall ever seeing any physical reason
to believe that, e.g. no pregnant women around. Thing is, we used to
play all thru there all the time (none of the SMU stuff was there then
and it was a really really big vacant area with wooded path etc.) after
school (St. Francis) and hardly ever saw anyone at all, including even
vehicles coming and going.

That was the Collins House. See link below. It was called Gorsebrook. We played in it as kids when we attended Tower Road School. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enos_Collins.

I had a friend, Evelyn, who lived in St Paul’s Home for Girls. She and her sister went to Tower Road as well. After a few years she just disappeared and I always wondered what happened to her.

Is this an old discussion?? I am curious to find anything out I can about the home on Quinpool Road, it was called the Home of the Good Shepard and it was for troubled kids. I was under 14 when I was there and we younger girls were in our group. But behind the walls were other groups of older teens and older women in another group.

I have found 2 other girls who were there when I was, but they are bitter in their daily lives and do not want to talk about it.
