is officially the title of the Xmas special. Not sure if the world really
needs another take on this old chestnut but I`ll reserve judgment until I
see it.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Another endless spew of foes,
"A Christmas Carol" stoking Iggy's ire,
Who'll guess where the TARDIS goes?

etc., etc....

Why not add the next verse and try to redeem yourself? Y'know? Try and do

No - Marvel Comics' rubbishy "X-Men" characters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine_(comics)

Specifically, his claws/claus:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamantium

Finally watched my copy of "Neither the Sea Nor the Sand", Iggy. Creepy as
all hell, and quite transgressive for its time in its themes, etc. You got
your copy yet? It's one to get the family (probably teens upwards!) to
huddle round and watch over Christmas if there aren't any decent ghost
stories on TV...

(Not that it IS a ghost story. Don't want to give anything away...)

Yes, but I haven't watched it yet. It flopped at the time, but what do
you think? There's a sort of hypnotic awfulness to it that's pretty
unique. Must deserve some sort of cult status.

Meanwhile I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the Wilmer Holmes DVDs from
the States. Reviews give the stories the thumbs up; but complain about
the lousy transfer. Still, as it's not available in the UK...

I was astonished by the 'sick' reaction from the teenage slasher movie
fans (Saw etc.) when I dug out the Hannibal movies a couple of weeks
ago (in a misguided attempt to introduce some 'upmarket' material).
I'd consider them tame in comparison.

Definitely! "Hypnotic awfulness" is pretty good! (How about "dermal
psychedeliquescence"? Y'know - when he starts to decay and all that?) You
know what really freaked me out when I watched it? When the doctor
diagnosed the guy's cause of death as "sub-arachnoid haemorrhage". It's
what my mum died of ten years back now. So it gives me a shiver and I flick
off the DVD (only temporarily, of course! to get meself another beer! not
creeped out, honest, guv!) and there on News 24 is this interviewee saying
"It's like a switch going off in your head"...

A triple whammy synchronicity or what? And here was me telling everyone I
know I've got love in my heart coz the black bird of grief in my ribcage has
finally fucked off! ;-)

I was astonished by the 'sick' reaction from the teenage slasher movie
fans (Saw etc.) when I dug out the Hannibal movies a couple of weeks
ago (in a misguided attempt to introduce some 'upmarket' material).
I'd consider them tame in comparison.
Not sure I get you, Iggy. They were sickened by Hannibal or "Neither the
Sea..."?
Silence and (more particularly) Hannibal.
"Silence of the Lambs" is a fantastic film and works on almost every level -
especially if you've read the novel. (Although that chilly, vaguely
objective first-person POV when describing Lecter and his thoughts only
works in prose: from memory, that line that goes "He considered his own
psychology to be grotesque but practical, like a chair made of antlers." -
that is one cool line!)

"Hannibal" - the novel - is a very poor threequel, both as book and film.
Typical overwrought, overdesigned Ridley Scott superficial
stylefest-over-substance. What grossed the "Saw"-gen kids out then? Surely
not the risible brain-eating sequence at the end?

is officially the title of the Xmas special. Not sure if the world really
needs another take on this old chestnut but I`ll reserve judgment
until
I
see it.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Another endless spew of foes,
"A Christmas Carol" stoking Iggy's ire,
Who'll guess where the TARDIS goes?
etc., etc....
<titter>
Just wait. I'm already sharpening my Claus.
I'll bet. Wolverine ain't got nothing on you!
Never heard of it. Any links to Wolverhampton?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamantium
Definitely! "Hypnotic awfulness" is pretty good! (How about "dermal
psychedeliquescence"? Y'know - when he starts to decay and all that?)
You
know what really freaked me out when I watched it? When the doctor
diagnosed the guy's cause of death as "sub-arachnoid haemorrhage". It's
what my mum died of ten years back now. So it gives me a shiver and I flick
off the DVD (only temporarily, of course! to get meself another beer! not
creeped out, honest, guv!) and there on News 24 is this interviewee saying
"It's like a switch going off in your head"...
A triple whammy synchronicity or what? And here was me telling everyone I
know I've got love in my heart coz the black bird of grief in my ribcage has
finally fucked off! ;-)
Post by Ignis Fatuus
Meanwhile I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the Wilmer Holmes DVDs from
the States. Reviews give the stories the thumbs up; but complain about
the lousy transfer. Still, as it's not available in the UK...

Dunno. Maybe it seemed too 'real'. From the little I've seen of saw
it's just a gorefest with no story or characters. The inevitable
string of primordial grunts did nothing to enlighten me.

I think the thing about the Saw films is that they've almost done
something Sawardian in making the violent content into almost the
servings of a kind of 'comfort food'. In a way they're films about
controlled chaos in which everything about it is contrived and
controlled. Jigsaw always does what he does, these people inhabit the
traps and predictably die in them. The gruesomeness makes it more
'real', 'intense' and 'vivid' perhaps but it's giving them exactly
what they want.

Silence of the Lambs however is about things being completely out of
control and about unsettling the audience, and its squarely about how
the killer can't be imprisoned. In a way its a far more volatile and
confrontational film than Saw, and as such it's kind of more hostile
perhaps.

Derivative title certainly, but I greatly enjoyed Series 5 under
Moffat far more than I ever enjoyed the RTD era, so I decided to give
it the benefit of the doubt. I also noticed how a lot of the anti-
Moffat naysayers have picked on the title and used that as a platform
to say how it 'isn't as good now Russell's gone' (rofl!) and how 'it's
obviously under-budget now'. So I didn't want to get sucked in to that
kind of naysayer rhetoric.

But then I saw the trailer and saw that it wasn't just the title
they'd ripped off from Christmas Carol, it was practically the entire
plot. I'm not really quite as looking forward to it anymore, I
expected far more originality from the Moff.

Carol from C. E. "Bunny" Webber!

As Iggy asks, why? Originality is noticeable by its absence in
Moffatt's Dr Who work. As a writer, he's given us a zombie story,
repeated variations on The Time Traveller's Wife (right down to an
'initial' meeting in a library), and overuse of the 'repeated creepy
catchphrase' motif. The results are often well-told and very well-done
as atmosphere goes, but however much you like his material it can't
really be accused of originality.

It surprises me more that they'd rip off A Christmas Carol and *call*
the episode "A Christmas Carol" than that they'd rip it off. It's not
obviously a bad idea to retell the story with a time travel spin on
the 'ghosts', it's the best-known and most oft-copied Christmas tale
for good reason (and I'm not normally a fan of Dickens), and what
little we see of Gambon's performance reminds me (encouragingly) of
Derek Jacobi's Professor Yana, one of new Who's best guest roles.
Derivative stories well-told are what I'd come to expect from Moffatt
(well, before this year, when most of his efforts weren't terribly
well-told...), so I don't see any reason to be surprised if that's
what we get this time - in fact I'm looking forward to it despite the
disappointment that was the larger part of season 5.

Although, as I've mentioned before, Moffat had used the 'initial'
meeting in a library in his Decalog story "Continuity Errors", many
years before The Time Traveller's Wife was written.

Admittedly, recycling his own ideas isn't the height of originality,
but they were his own ideas, not Audrey Niffenberger's. At least give
him credit for that.

Originality is noticeable by its absence in
Moffatt's Dr Who work. As a writer, he's given us a zombie story,

Yads, you're posting nonsense again.

There weren't any cracks going round repairing things in either
Moffat's Decalog story "Continuity Errors" or in "The Time
Traveller's Wife".

And even if there were such cracks, it still wouldn't change the fact
that Moffat was first with the idea of setting an initial meeting from
the time traveller's perspective in a library.

As long as the cracks do not show up this time,
that counts for something.

A starship is in danger of crashing into a planet, and the man who can save it by altering the planet's weather refuses. The Doctor opens the episode trying to alter the personality of that man by meddling in his past. Why not just tow the starship to safety? I believe that the TARDIS has the power. I once saw it tow an entire planet!

A spaceship is about to crash on a planet with weird, violent chrsytalline clouds. Only one Kasran Sardick can save the ship by calming the clouds, but he refuses! He is quite ruthless and uncaring. The Doctor therefore sets out to change him by intervening in his childhood! Everything the Doctor does with young Sardick shows up in old Sardick's memories.

How can the Doctor alter the timeline of such an important person so drastically? Wouldn't Sardick's whole life be a "fixed point in time"?

Young man Sardick falls in love with Abagail, whom he and the Doctor have been taking out of the freezer one night a year for years. She tells him that she's dying. She hyas just one day left. Since Sardick is very rich, why doesn't he start a massive research program to find a cure for her disease, as soon as he is in full control of the family fortune?

I suggest that the Doctor take Young boy Sardick to that crashing spaceship, so that old Sardick will be motivated to save it.

Why can't the TARDIS tow the spaceship out of danger, the same way it towed EARTH?

Sardick get hologramed up to the spaceship, but still refuses to save it.

Finally, the Doctor brings young Sardick forward to meet old Sardick. That finally convinces him to save the spaceship.

But his brain waves have changed, so he can no longer control the cloud machine.

Abagail is let out of the freezer to sing the clouds calm to save the ship. Old Sardick then rides with her through the air on a shark drawn vehicle, using up her final day. I suggest that he clap her back in the freezer after 12 hours, then start an all out project to research a cure for her disease.

I just got another idea: Use some of the Doctor's regeneration energy to cure Abagail.

Why then was it said in "The Time Of The Doctor" that he was out of regens? Why did Clara have to beg the Time Lords for a new set?

It seems logical to me that a poison that can kill a Time Lord in less than an hour and disable his regeneration ability would take a lot of energy to neutralize!

to cure Abagail.
Except that the Matt Smith Doctor is out of regenerations!
Not according to Let's Kill Hitler.
How many regens did the Doctor say he had in that episode?
Why then was it said in "The Time Of The Doctor" that he was out of
regens? Why did Clara have to beg the Time Lords for a new set?
He was dead then River Song gave him all his regenrations to revive hi.
You say that River Song was a MAN at the time? (You said "his" when
referring to River Song's regenerations).
I had assumed that ALL of River Song's regeneration energy was used up
nullifying the poison! Did someone state otherwise?
When was River a man?
Anyways nullifying the poison and ransferring her regeneration energy.
It could be that the Doctor's body had to use up ALL of River Song's
donated regeneration energy to heal the effects of the poison!
How?
It seems logical to me that a poison that can kill a Time Lord in less
than an hour and disable his regeneration ability would take a lot of
energy to neutralize!
THat a full cycle will be lost?
Maybe even more!

A TARDIS capable of towing a planet & of towing a ship out of a black hole should be easily able to tow a ship away from a planet!

is officially the title of the Xmas special. Not sure if the world really
needs another take on this old chestnut but I`ll reserve judgment until I
see it.
Why aren't there copyright problems with using that title?

Why aren't there copyright problems with using that title?
1) Titles can't be copyrighted. It's one of the reasons trademarks are so
popular.

2) Even if they could, Dickens is long dead and is older than Disney.
Therefore all copyrights long since expired.

I propose that the Doctor try his childhood altering trick on Adolf Hitler!
