The ordinary North Koreans are about as equipped for making sensible ethical decisions as a lifetime Moonie.

They deserve only our sympathy, though our help would be nice. They certainly don't deserve to be nuked.

Tell you what's going to happen next. They'll fire off some missiles programmed to not quite reach Guam, probably without warheads. US forces will, presumably, try to shoot them down, which is maybe about 50/50. The NK will hope to provoke some kind of retaliation from the US which will, unlike the NK sabre rattling, kill some people and tend to line the Chinese up behind NK, effectively neutralising the sanctions.

This will help cement the NK leadership in place. Fear of American air raids is a very big deal in keeping the NK people in line

Trump is too naive to see this coming. Hopefully when some of his pet generals tell him he'll listen, but it's not to be counted on.

If North Korea launches against U.S. territory, warheads or no, we can interpret that as an act of war.

In 1999 Trump said the time is now to remove all nuclear capabilities from North Korea before they have any kind of nuclear warhead.

Sure you could. But it doesn't matter, because America never declares war these
days, declaring war brings international obligations, raises the Geneva
convention etc.. What history will remember is who split the first blood, not
who made it official. Actualy, technically, the Korean war never ended, it's
just a temporary truce. Don't need a new war, just thaw out the old one.

No, what matters isn't the official state of hostilities but what happens on
the ground and what the likely results are.

In 1999 Trump said the time is now to remove all nuclear capabilities from
North Korea before they have any kind of nuclear warhead.
And every president in 50 years would have liked to do that. But then the
Pentagon shows them the result of the war games they've been conducting all
that time. And those results are truely grim. The North Korean military is very
old-fashioned, but also very large and they have huge amounts of artillary
pointed south. The war games predict an horendous death toll. They predict that
any conflict would go nuclear very quickly. Very large numbers of South Koreans
and, probably, Japanese and Chinese people would be killed, let alone the
happless north koreans.

The smart weapons needed to take out widely dispersed artillary are presently
in short supply.

And, remember, America failed to truely defeat the North Koreans the first time
arround.

Then there's what happens if North Korea falls. When there's a few million
brainwashed North Koreans on the move. It would make the ISIS refugees look
like a trivial problem.

This one goes right back to the way the original Korean war was left.

Actually, we did come close. If that pompous shit MacArthur had taken
China at its word about keeping our planes 70 miles away from the Yalu
(and they would stay out of Korea), we had pretty much defeated the
North Korean army. We had run them north short of that 70-mile line.
But MacArthur maintained that "hot pursuit" obviated imaginary lines
and got the Chinese army by return mail. They came close to driving
us into the sea off the south end of the peninsula before we were able
to push them back (they had more men; we had more bullets) to the area
close to the 39th parallel, where we settled down for "peace" talks
under the present truce.

And that is the one and only reason for China's support of North Korea.

All missiles from NK went up into the trajectory of the US previously.
