'Miss America' Eliminates Swimsuit Competition;
Will Not Judge On Appearance

"We are no longer a pageant," declared Gretchen Carlson, chair of the
board of trustees of the Miss America Organization, as she outlined
sweeping changes for the 2019 Miss America Competition this morning.
Those include eliminating the swimsuit portion of the event as well as
tweaking the evening gown section. Effective this September, the 51
women representing their home states and the District of Columbia "will
no longer be judged on outward physical appearance."

Carlson, a former Miss America and Fox News contributor who sued Roger
Ailes for sexual harassment in 2016, appeared on ABC's Good Morning
America Tuesday to deliver the news that candidates will no longer be
judged on their looks. "We're interested in what makes you, you," she
said.

The changes will first be seen during ABC's September 9 live broadcast
from Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.

The event originated in 1921 as a bathing beauty revue, but will
henceforth see candidates participate in a live interactive session
with the judges rather than swanning by in high heels and high-cut
swimsuits. Each will highlight her achievements and goals in life, and
how she will use her talents, passion and ambition to perform the job
of Miss America.

The former evening gown competition will now give participants "the
freedom to outwardly express their self-confidence in evening attire of
their choosing while discussing how they will advance their social
impact initiatives."

The talent portion remains unchanged. Carlson was asked about a
potential ratings loss in kiboshing the swimsuits and she told GMA,
"That's not a highly-rated part of the competition. People actually
like the talent part of the competition."

Carlson said on GMA, "We want to be open, transparent, inclusive to
women who may not have felt comfortable participating in our program
before. But look, we have always had talent and scholarship and we need
to message that particular of the program better as well."

She added, "We're experiencing a cultural revolution in our country
with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard
on many issues. Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and
join this empowerment movement."

I'm curious to know what their policy is on burkas. It *sounds* like
they're saying women can wear whatever they want and a burka is
certainly a choice made by some women, although more likely at the
existence of the men in their lives.

And what about gender? Do they require contestants to "identify" as
women? Or are transgenders cool too? And what about all the other "new"
genders like "free spirit", "questioning", etc. etc.? And how about
people who identify as men but just want their turn on the stage to
prove that the competition does not exclude anyone?

Why even have the contest? Make it an essay contest. Does this open it up to 400 lb chicks?

They want a scholarship contest for women of average/indifferent
appearance?

Mail in the applications,do interviews in a private office.
No one will care to watch on television.

As this trickles down to the state pageants the show will die.

That's what I thought at first, but then I remembered that when it comes
to reality TV and competitions involving people being eliminated, people
will watch almost anything. There's definitely a way to make it work. That
doesn't mean the people in charge know how to do it, but I don't think
it's necessarily doomed.

That's the big problem I see; what will they do at the local and state
level?

Ok, that was cruel, unusual, and fat shaming.

But I'll admit to a chuckle and then
to a bit of self embarassment...

She is married, and over the age of 24, which disqualifies her from the competition, according to the list of qualifications I found:

You have to be at or under 24?!? That's age discrimination! Let's boycott.

Yeah, but how long is it going to be, before:

a) Men sue to get in, based on, obviously, gender discrimination.
b) Over 24s sue to get in, based on, obviously, age discrimination.

(both of which are illegal)

The point is that whole concept of Miss America - in fact, of beauty
pageants in general - is a dinosaur. As is always the case, when things are
about to go extinct (i.e., to be evolved out of existence), they start
mutating (evolving) at a fast (observable) rate - in a desperate attempt to
find something that works - that might stave off the inevitable.

P.S. I'm actually surprised that MA *is* still here. I thought it more or
less died (and had been dropped from TV coverage) some time back.

Carlson knew Fox News didn't hire a former Miss America for her amazing
skills as a journalist, and had no problem accepting a big million
dollar contract for several years. Now she's suddenly seen the light and
is making her own cottage industry out of the MeToo movement (like Leah
Remini & Scientology).

Ironic that she's disdaining the "pageant" label, since for years
Miss America trumpeted that distinction as its defense against
being called a "beauty contest" that cared too much about judging
appearance.

Regardless,an event invented to promote beach tourism should
never be without a swimsuit element.
